In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

Man, no matter how many times I come here, it gets better every time, Novi thought as he walked through the streets. The RGRUC are really pulling overtime on the whole restoration get-up.
The young Chronicler had only recently arrived through the help of a navigation gummi he'd picked up at Traverse Town, and it was the first time he'd used the Warp function of his Gummi Phone. The chipmunk engineers back at Disney Castle hadn't been joking when they'd said that it would be weird - he'd felt like he'd just watched a lifetime's worth of TV in the span of a few seconds, and he was still blinking away the lights from his eyes.
In doing so, he almost missed the message board coming up in front of him, so he was just able to notice that his feet were still walking before his head made contact with the obstacle and leaving a spectacular display of stars and lights to splay across his vision. Rubbing them clear and gingerly nursing his aching head, Novi peered at the message board. It seemed to be various notices and advertisements, requests for things to be done around town. Temporary night watch, running the water system, a cartography system for the OS (he could do that), all the little things that would help Radiant Garden run smoothly. But his gaze was drawn to a note pinned at a slight distance to the others - something about a reward for clearing out a Heartless infringement near the Bailey...
Novi's eyes widened. A bounty poster! So if someone did this job, they would be able to collect a bounty for taking out a target - and if that person just happened to be him, that would make him...
'A bounty hunter,' he whispered, unable to keep the longing out of his voice. How had he wished to be one of those insanely strong mercenaries taking on nothing but the most dangerous missions after the most dangerous foes? How many tales had he heard of travels to worlds unknown in search of riches untold?
There was no need for hesitation. He took down the notice and clutched it in his hand. Of course, he could do all the chronicling on the way, but this was a chance of a lifetime! Now, all he needed was a partner to help him do the actual hunting part...
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "I'VE BEEN BELIEVING IN SOMETHING SO DISTANT"
So it was true; there were actually other worlds besides Eucharistia, The Smuggler's Moon and Traverse Town.
Nadia had been ultimately forced to leave Traverse Town after that White Bitch had managed to freeze hell over, literally. While that annoying clown's tower had been quite a pain on the eyes, finding dozens of trees and obelisks around every corner had become more of a nuisance, especially since they constantly reported her actions to the Ice Queen. Sure, the amazon's "balance" and "peace" and "no Heartless" ideals were inspiring but they sure weren't paying the mercenary's bills. There was only one thing to do; obey her own "code" and move to bigger and greener pastures.
Fortunately an idiot claiming to be a merchant landed on the world and it was rather simple for Verdansky to stow away on his ship, remaining unnoticed until the man had landed on another world: Radiant Garden. The landing and escape were more... complicated, though she had stunned instead of killing... or at least had attempted to do so. Seriously, she didn't want a bounty placed on her own head during her first day at the city.
By the time she had managed to get out of the ship, Nadia had already made up her mind regarding her next course of action. Exploring these new surroundings seemed like her first priority, and she needed to keep a low profile while doing so. Luckily, Radiant Garden seemed to be as civilized, if not superior, to Traverse Town and there was always dirty work around to do and people willing to pay for it.
Well, I won't complain. This place will have to do for now. The female thought as she walked down the streets leading to the marketplace. She had gone around asking for information (males were especially persuaded to let their tongues loose) and what she had learned could prove to be quite useful: apparently the city was run by some sort of elite committee (she would have to pay them a visit sometime soon) and, thanks to the local security system, Heartless were hardly a problem. However, once you stepped out of the town's boundaries you would get swarmed by those little fiends.
Oh, she was up for it.
It wasn't long before Nadia had found the local message board and, to her great dismay, most of the "jobs" offered were rather lame and non challenging. Deliver this mail, help me move this cargo... hell, dress up as a clown for a toddler's birthday party?
What the hell?
Suddenly a whisper reached her ears, making her turn her head and look down at the boy beside her. She first assumed he was talking to her, having recognized her from somewhere, somehow... but the female soon realized that he was having a conversation with himself. Oh well, none of her business. As soon as she looked back at the message board, however, something in her brain suddenly clicked and made her understand the situation.
"Don't even think about it." Her hand grabbed the advertisement in his hands and snatched it away. Nadia had two reasons to do what she was doing; number one: being a mercenary was no game and one could get killed while attempting to finish a task, especially a mere child, and number two: she needed that job. "Don't you think you're a little too.. uh, what's the word, young for the task? You could seriously get hurt, you know."
'Hey, lady! What's the big deal?!' the young Chronicler cried indignantly.
Novi's hand reflexively flicked out and took the offender's thumb between two fingers, easing and twisting it out of its grip on the paper and using his remaining fingers to whip the advertisement from her hands, his feet twisting away swiftly to a safe distance. He hadn't trained all those years in running away for nothing, and where he lacked in actual offensive combat ability, he made up for in his speed. All that time he'd spent taking artefacts and documents from ungenerous possession hadn't gone to waste. He wasn't going to let some random lady go and take away his dream (small as it was) right before his eyes without a fight.
'I got this job, fair and square,' he said, waving the piece of paper proudly. 'There's no way I'm gonna let you just take it away. And who're you calling young? I'm older than you think, I'll have you know! Don't treat me like a kid!'
Novi crossed his arms, showing his conviction to his decision to take the job for his own. Who was she to steal others' jobs like that, anyway? She looked like the travelling thief type, with her strange fashionable get-up that reeked of self-spending. Though, to be fair, it did look worn down in places, like it had seen better days, but not in the way people who were once rich kept on trying to put on airs of wealth in their poverty. More like the fact that it was well-coordinated was a side effect to its mobility, which, now he looked at it, was quite good. And she was pretty too, he noted with a slight blush. Maybe he hadn't needed to be quite so forceful - perhaps he could have just explained... no! She'd called him little!
He mentally shook himself. The woman was armed, he could see that. And her attire was made so that there were no restrictions to her movements, so he could deduce that she was a combatant of some sort. Most of those around Radiant Garden were usually connected to the RGRUC, the others were usually travellers from a variety of different worlds. They often used their talents to make some money around the city, so no doubt that this one too was out to get her hands on -
Wait a minute.
This woman was a bounty hunter. Of course she was! What else would her lithe physique, combat attire and exotic weapons be suited for? And Novi had a bounty poster, which she wanted. And she was a bounty hunter, which he wanted. An arrangement began to work in his head.
He'd dashed back up close to the woman in a matter of moments, on one knee, and offered up the now slightly crumpled poster with both hands, a look of longing and admiration in his eyes. 'My name is Novi,' he said ardently. 'Will you be my partner?'
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "AND I'VE BEEN DENYING THIS FEELING OF HOPELESSNESS"
((Kill me for taking so long, ok? :3 I'm sure you hate me now, LOL))
If she had been a random bystander passing by, Nadia would probably have found the scene funny, perhaps even ridiculous. A well-armed woman attempting to claim what "rightfully" belonged to her quickly outsmarted by a mere child... before he decided to come back and recruit her for some kind of mission. But, in this case, she wasn't laughing for very obvious reasons. If only the kid knew that she wasn't a "nice player". Her short tempered attitude was one of her main assets, as it intimidated her targets, but also one of her biggest flaws; she didn't exactly enjoy having her buttons pushed, and this humiliation wouldn't be taken lightly.
She scowled, her face reddened with rage as her free hand held her other thumb; the kid hadn't been too gentle when he snatched the paper back, after all. But still, Nadia couldn't figure out how the kid had managed to move so quickly. She had speed of her own, far superior to many of her fellow bounty hunter's back at the moon; her job required her to be alert and to have quick reflexes. Had she been careless in underestimating him? Or was he actually faster than her?
"Tch..." she muttered to herself, refraining from going all berserk on the younger hume. Also, now that she thought about it, he kind of reminded her of...
The mercenary rolled her eyes, mentally shaking her head. What was happening to her? She practically associated any kid she met with him! He was gone and she knew it, even though admitting it hadn't been easy. And that brings us to the next question: had she ever accepted the boy's death?
And then, when he finally finished admiring her body or whatever he was doing, the little scoundrel spoke. Verdansky raised an eyebrow as he kneeled before her... no, not a chance. She was not marrying a stranger. She was well aware that she had that sort of beautiful femme fatale effect on people, but seriously... wait, what?
The woman blinked, looking down at the boy for a moment before snorting at his request. He had to be kidding... of course he was, he was a child!
"Sorry, Novi, I work alone. That's how mercenaries roll, just minding their own business and hoping they don't piss someone off to get bounties placed on their heads. That is, unless you join one of those crazy mafia orgies who always end up killed... as far as I'm concerned, at least." Wait, what was she saying? It sounded like she was encouraging him to become a bounty hunter. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she glanced around, relieved by the fact that most of the bystanders had left by now. "But like I said, you're too young for that kind of stuff... hold on, let me read that."
She snatched the poster once again, this time careful enough to raise it above his reach in case he wanted to go for a second round. "Hmm... let's see here... Heartless... Bailey... tch, this is no bounty." She quickly returned the paper and turned around, raising her hand as if saying goodbye. Now that she thought about it, Nadia had initially intended to beat the leaving hell out of Novi, but all of those feelings were gone for some reason.
Damn, why wouldn't those memories stay where they belonged?!
"They're just a couple of Heartless, you'll be fine!"
((I also apologise for disappearing - been busy with both jobs and uni applications T_T))
Novi's face fell as his dream began walking away with each clack of those boots on the cobbles. 'W-wait! Please! I'm sorry for nabbing the paper like that. You're a mercenary, right? You should be jumping at a chance to take something like this on!'
This was definitely not going the way he'd planned. He'd had this image of a dangerous, incredibly skilled but lethally beautiful bounty huntress (possibly complete with a tragic past or dark secret or something like that) who would take up any chance to relight her passion, challenge her fear, overcome an impossible danger, give herself a reason to live, etc. What he did not have in mind was someone walking in the opposition direction from that aforementioned danger.
When she continued to go on her way, Novi zipped around her and appeared right in front of her face. He put on his most pleading and imploring look (it also helped that he was shortish for his age, a huge plus in this case) as he looked up at her to ask again, 'I'm not asking for that much, just that you just accompany me in putting myself in mortal danger and inevitable agony - you don't really need to do anything, except possibly prevent the occasional eventuality of death and take down an incalculable number of enemies... if you're worried, I'll be right there to provide advice, support and patch you up if you make a mess of things...'
His expression dropped a little as he added, 'And besides... I can't fight.'
So I couldn't take care of any Heartless... not even a little one. I can only run away.
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "ALL THE PROMISES I MADE, JUST TO LET YOU DOWN"
Having turned on her heels, the woman began to walk away, attempting to ignore Novi's last resort plea. Still she found herself unable to completely shut his words out of her mind and, eventually, bits and bits started to circle his head in a rather irritating pattern. Was she running away, fleeing like a coward from an unavoidable danger? No, not at all. Nadia had been gifted with bravery, and she had made use of this gift more than once in the past. It was more of a matter of honor than of courage; sure, she hunted for a living but the challenge was all part of the experience. If the mercenary started to take all of those easy jobs that paid big... well, it certainly wouldn't be as fun.
Yet again, Radiant Garden didn't seem to be any fun at all. Actually, now that she thought about it, perhaps this world wasn't as much of an improvement to Traverse Town was she initially expected. Taking a deep breath, she stopped on her tracks just in time for the boy to appear right in front of her once more. He just wouldn't give up, would he? She folded her arms across her chest, eyeing the boy with curiosity as she listened. Verdansky had to admit that he had determination; maybe it wasn't the smart kind of determination, but it was determination nonetheless.
Maybe, just maybe... hmm, she couldn't change her mind now. Nope, that wasn't an option. She couldn't let others think she had turned soft. Sure, one could say that she was being extremely paranoic in this case but, hey, a true rival was always on the lookout. Always. Twenty-four/seven, no exceptions. People had started to glance at their direction once again, and even though they weren't nearly as many as before she couldn't risk her reputation.
Or at least, that was the reason she wanted to believe herself.
And then he added that small, little phrase. The cherry on top, the icing on the cake. It definately moved something within the mercenary; hell, she had certainly gone soft. Novi hadn't made her recall him once, but twice. What the hell was going on with her that day?! But oh well, she had made up her mind. This time for real. "Fine fine, I'll help you clear the bailey... wherever that is, anyway-"
Having practically just arrived at Radiant Garden, Nadia had no time to gather information on the city's schematics. Besides, she definately wasn't looking forward to becoming a universal encyclopedia: the girl only learned what was useful to her and the rest was dismissed, thrown away like Aunt Marie's famous (or rather infamous) apple tarts. "Just lead the way and I'll gun them down for you." Awaiting further instructions, the bounty hunter looked down at the scholar; she was totally claiming AT LEAST sixty per cent of the rewards. Hey, she was practically going to do the whole job on her own!
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "YOU BELIEVED IN ME, BUT I'M BROKEN"
When he heard the long-waited word of confirmation, Novi punched the air with both fists, and let out a much-held in 'YES!' into the sky, not being able to resist throwing in a cheeky backflip in celebration. This was what it felt to be part of a team! Oh, how he had missed this! Going on missions with the Knights, taking assignments, the boring debriefing afterwards - they were all things which he had loved as part of his life as a resident Chronicler back at the Castle, but of all those things, two-man cell team missions were the ones where his heart lay. Instead of having five pairs of eyes watching him all the time to make sure he didn't trip over, in a double team, there was a sense of equality between them, and the only back they had to watch was each other's.
And now, he was partnering up again, this time with a real bounty hunter! And from what he could gather, she seemed like the real deal - none of those phonies or half-cast ego-wielding losers he'd seen in his travels, swaggering their buckets of empty boasts around pretty girls or the tavern areas. They needed to get some real, healthy self-esteem before he'd even consider viewing them as bounty hunters. Not like this one - the way she carried herself with a dignified grace (okay, it was more of a half-strut, but the dignified part was definitely there), the sharpness of her form, and most of all, her eyes. Eyes that had seen things, that had been out there. Eyes that knew. He wanted eyes like them.
'Don't worry, while my offensive capabilities are zero, my support as a backup is first class!' Novi said with a wide smile. 'Bailey's that way, it's not too far if we take that alleyway round the corner. Man, I can't say how cool it is to be working with you! If you need anything, just say the word, er...'
He stopped in his tracks, and turned to face her properly. 'Sorry, I never got your name.'
A soft giggle escaped her lips as she watched him celebrate his success. He was so young, full of life and vitality... and yet so small, little, fragile, without any apparent means to defend himself. Nadia still failed to understand why he had become so interested in this particular bounty but, hey, she hadn't really gotten Nicky's drives when he asked her to join her hunting either, or when he... or when he did what he did. She noticed her eyes had begun to water and thus looked away, wiping them as if dust had gotten into them.
Fucking female emotions.
And then he asked her name. "Huh?" The word immediately escaped her lips, accompanied by a seriously confused facial expression. Wait... had he said something? Had he been talking the whole time she'd been wandering her mind? Wow... ignoring children, way to go, Nadia. This was certainly a bit awkward; well, a tad more than just "a bit." "Oh, the name's Nadia. Nadia Verdansky. But you can call me "mistress" or "your highness".
She chuckled, stretching her arms upward before asking. "So... where did you say the bailey was? I think I might have missed that tiny little detail."
Upon getting a reply, Nadia would nod and start heading toward the alleyway, expecting Novi to follow closely behind. Radiant Garden fortunately had some sort of security system against Heartless, the claymores, but every piece of technology could be hacked and the woman didn't really want to put her life at hands of a machine. The huntress drew Opal, loading it ready as she glanced back at the boy. "So, besides running around and snatching things from people's hands, what can you do?"
In order to be able to protect both, herself and the kid, Nadia needed to know exactly what the chronicler was capable of. This was apparently going to be a two-man mission and she didn't want any casualties lost to such a pitiful enemy.
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "AND ALL I FEEL IS THIS CRUEL WANTING"
'Nadia,' he tested out the name on his tongue. 'Great! The bailey's this way!'
As he happily bounded along the path beside her, he felt the long-awaited scent of adventure tingle through his nose, making his smile even wider. He was going on a real bounty mission after a real bounty with a real bounty hunter! And oh, look, she was taking out a gun. Also very cool. On a second glance, it was a very particular weapon built with a more delicate-looking design than most firearms - with no visible bullet cartridge but instead something that looked very much like a magic dispenser unit, utilising a curious crystal-based mechanism to store the magic in question. It certainly wasn't of a make from any world he knew, that was for sure.
'Hm? Oh, me?' he said, a little startled from having his focus broken. 'I'm a combat-type chronicler. I specialise in support magic, so I can heal and guard you with spells, mess with the people's movements, boost your attacks, give you info on the enemies - pretty much anything except for directly attacking, really. Oh, and I can run away pretty good, but we probably won't be doing much of that with you around.'
He gave her a bright grin. 'From the looks of it though, it looks like you specialise in long-ranged magic based combat using your guns,' he surmised. 'That means that it'll probably be best if I back you up with Reflect spells upon facing melee attacks and soup up your shots with my G-Driver. I don't know how many shots you can store in that mechanism, but judging from its size and cut, I would say it's about twenty or so? If you run out, I can always back you up with my Strobe Drive while you give your guns a chance to reload. And since we're facing Heartless, it'll probably be extra useful.'
Novi ran slightly ahead, showing his teeth mischievously. 'See, I'm not all talk, you know?'
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "WE'VE BEEN FALLING FOR ALL THIS TIME"
Well, didn't this kid know his shit? A soft smile graced her features as she listened to him talk about his many talents and abilities. He seemed really excited to be part of this adventure, perhaps to the point that he could have been hyper in the eyes of a stranger. Nadia didn't mind though; sure at first he was nothing but an annoyance, an obnoxious pest even. However, as the minutes went by, Novi reminded her more of Nickolas and that was... well, it did feel kind of good. Great, now she was having a mood swing. Her mind reiterated: fucking female emotions.
And to think that she had actually never been good with children.
"Yep, that's right!" She nodded, glancing at her weapon for a moment. The mercenary didn't exactly remember how or when she had gotten the set of twin pistols; now that she thought about it, it seemed as if they had always been by her side. However, her childhood memories were practically jumbled and cloudy, thus leaving her unable to be certain of her conclusions. "It would all depend on the amount of energy I use to power up my shots. Fortunately for us, each of my guns has access to three elemental energy depots, so I doubt I'll be running dry."
Raising a hand for him to stop, she tiptoed up the nearby stairway and looked around. Nothing. Nadia proceeded to motion for him to go up next. "All clear."
Paranoia? Not really, but one needed to be alert while hunting. The last thing she could possibly want was getting pinned down in an enemy ambush; those Heartless could be real sons of bizzies when grouped together. "But don't worry, I also have darts and grenades on me just in case, and I've been told I'm quite good at fighting close and personal."
"Also, considering that I'm going to be the one taking all the hits, I guess that it's fair for me to mark certain... "conditions" regarding our partnership." Nadia stopped on her tracks once they found themselves before a rather small entrance which she assumed led to the bailey. The "mama's little three simple rules" part was always annoying and frustrating; she knew. But even then, better safe than sorry, mostly for Novi's sake. "Rule number one: your life is a priority here. If we're in a tight spot, watch your own skin before even worrying about me. Number two: This isn't a tourist attraction. We're here to hunt, not to admire the view. And rule number three: you obey every single of my commands. If I tell you to stay back and support, you stay back and support. If I tell you to go hide, you hide. If I tell you to run and save yourself... you do. No buts, no exceptions."
Raising Opal, she made sure everything was going well in there. The female would choose her first elemental supply once they encountered the first wave of Heartless. "Are we clear?"
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "AND NOW I'M LOST IN PARADISE"
Novi frowned. 'Come on, Nadia,' he said a little sourly. 'I know you're stronger than me, but I'm not a kid, you know. It's not the first time I've been on a mission, and I've got the procedure down through and through. Don't worry, I know the drill.'
Yeah, I do, but as if I'm gonna just abandon a partner like that, he thought as he led the way into the Bailey. I wasn't made a Chronicler yesterday, you know. And when you're on a mission as a Chronicler, no matter what rule number one is, rule number zero is that you never leave your companions behind. That doesn't change no matter where the mission or who I'm partnered up with.
As he ascended the steps, he began wondering why there would be a Heartless infestation in the Bailey. It was still within the town's borders, so the Claymores should really have taken care of them. Also, taking down Heartless was dangerous, and so such a task should have been circulated more privately, rather than leaving it there on a public notice-board for anyone to take. It didn't quite seem right. And now that he thought about it, there wasn't an official RGRUC seal on the bounty notice. Did this mean that this was put up outside of RGRUC knowledge?
Usually the RGRUC would send one of their own to take care of Heartless problems, he thought carefully. No matter how many bounty hunters come through these parts, there's no way that they would leave up a bounty notice for Heartless on such an easily accessible place. Real bounty notices are circulated around taverns or hunting circles. So why was the request placed there? And if not the committee, who?
Turning to Nadia, he began, 'I think there's something weir-'
However, he felt the darkness behind him and he reflexively ducked as a shadowy claw tore at the air where his head had just been, rolling away to a safe distance, just in time to see a dozen Heartless rise from the murk that formed on the steps, their yellow eyes glistening ominously as they threw themselves at the pair. Novi threw out his hand, casting a Reflect spell upon contact, launching the Heartless backwards into a more suitable range for Nadia's guns.
'Neoshadows! Even here? What are the claymores doing?!'
N A D I A V E R D A N S K Y "AS MUCH AS I'D LIKE THE PAST NOT TO EXIST"
Nadia arched a brow at the Chronicler's hasty and vague reply, but ultimately decided to ignore her suspicions and let it slide. The kid was smart and certainly not a pushover in his own way, but she wanted to make sure, absolutely sure that he wouldn't try to play hero and save the day. The galaxy did desperately need champions to fight for it but if they all ended up getting themselves killed in the easy missions... it wouldn't be any good for it, or anyone really. "Fine... it's just something you should keep in mind, kiddo."[/color]
The woman refrained from adding any extra comments after that (the last thing she needed was more drama between her and this "partner") and simply followed Novi into the bailey, in silence. The area seemed to be a rather pleasant spot, a nice place to chill, kick back and relax but nothing extraordinary. Yet again, most of the original bailey had collapsed a year before (or two, either way the fact wasn't exactly relevant to their situation) and what the pair was able to appreciate was fruit of nothing but the Restoration and Upkeep Committee's hard work. A work in progress more than anything. Eyes flickered from one place to another in search of any Heartless activity ahead, trusting Novi to watch her back and to do the same.
SWOOSH!
Her muscles immediately tensed up. She knew that sound too well; it wasn't just any swoosh; it was theirs. Nadia turned around, momentarily relieved by the younger boy's dodge. However, the worry made its comeback as she realized what they exactly were; Neoshadows. Crap. Accessing Opal's ice energy deposit, the huntress swiftly fired five ice trackers at the offender, trusting that they would be enough to defeat it. Fortunately for Team Hume, Novi's shield gave her time to analyze the situation. There were approximately ten enemies before them, possibly more; they wouldn't be able to fight them all at once. Verdansky moved a hand to her belt; their best chance was to divide them into two or three groups.
"Take cover!"
Pulling off a grenade's pin with her teeth, the bounty hunter threw the explosive at the disoriented party of foes, offering them a wide grin. This was no ordinary grenade; oh no, this was an adhesive grenade. It would keep most of the Heartless in place for a couple of minutes, particularly those that would fail to phase out of danger in time. And as a plus, it still dealt the damage of a standard grenade. "Much better."
((Opal's ice deposit: 20/30; adhesive grenades: 2; Neoshadows standing: 11)) ((Thinking of using Ellie's HP system gizmo for the Neoshadows. Thoughts?))
