In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

Hmm...that's right. I remember seeing those screens.
I kinda hope there's more to it than going back in time. It seems that's what all of the new games have been dong lately. It'd be nice to play forward some.
Very true. I'm pretty curious as to what happens next. Everything's just been explaining the past, which is great, but there's still quite a few questions that have yet to be answered.
I'm pretty sure that KH3D takes place after KHII, but they used the old character models just to make life easier. Please, if you want anything more accurate than what I say, go to kingdomhearts.wikia.com. They have people looking out for information like that.
Here's what I think about Kingdom Hearts 3D: It's not really going to be worth the DS upgrade. I say this because we've been waiting for Kingdom Hearts III for about four to five years now. One out of four Kingdom Hearts games in that time has been relevant (this is including Re: Chain of Memories...that's irrelevant because of the original Gameboy title). The only relevant game was Birth by Sleep during that time. Don't get me wrong, I loved playing Days and I'm going to get coded. But I am unable to understand why they're having another handheld game that is apparently going to wrap the three games (Days, Birth by Sleep, and coded) up in one bundle when they should focus on the most anticipated game in the series to wrap it all up and move the initial story. On top of that, I would have to get a completely new DS in order to play it with money I don't really have (and I'm not the only one who's thinking this).
In a nut shell, it's a horrible move for Square-Enix. I think it's all just to have a game on the 3DS.

I went to the KH wiki to read up real quick and found this: "Nomura also revealed that the 'Sora' here will not be the same Sora that we are familiar with." That answers that for me, but it also said that this will be "the next major installment in the Kingdom Hearts Series," so, I don't know. That's my 0.5 cents.

its.... complicated. its basically from what I know so far, Riku and Sora going through the Mark of Mastery exam because with the death of Xemnas and Ansem, seeker of darkness, Xehanort is back but with multiple forms, one will become him again.
its basically the last stop gap between the stories and just another way to expand the canon. The new combat system looks amazing, and I am sure the story will make sense in context.
Its Fiery Fireballs of Doom. I would put money down that we never actually get KH3, but instead we get KH filler. Here's a thought: With the huge amount of canon story data, what if KH3 isn't a game? What if it's a movie? Or a tv show?
Of course, the prbloem I have with KH3D is that a: the name is redundant, and B: they will never release the legendary KHIII on the Nintendo DS. Not even the 3DS. It isn't important enough. They will release it on the PS3, or my name is Larry Flint. And it's not.

The "3d" in KH3d isn't just entailing that it's on the 3DS. It means something. And no, of course they won't release KH3 on the DS. And they shouldn't. It's a minor system from a competiting company. It'll be on PS3 or PSP, likely the former just on account of capabilities and hardware.
However, KH3 is the next Kingdom Hearts game on the docket after 3d. Nomura has promised, though he has admitted hat FF Versus will take priority. So after that game wraps, KHIII will be next to be developed. From what I've heard, it's already in pre-planning, they're waiting for a lesser workload to dedicate more people and time to it after FF Versus is tossed out.
And I guarantee it will be a video game. Creating a movie or an anime in place of a KH3 would be a slap in the face to all the players and loyal fans who have waited a decade now for the series to come to a standing conclusion. SE is smart. They'd never pull anything like that. Post-KH3 content, sure. Not as KH3.
KH3 is comng. I wish it were sooner, but I can't and won't fault SquareEnix for milking a popular franchise for all they can.
EDIT: "3d" stands for Dream Drop Distance. It's relevance to the game is currently unknown.

On that note, yes they are milking it... And we keep buying into it. Why? Because we are always curious as to whats gonna happen. I started in Kingdom Hearts late, probably in about 2006. But does that change my opinion of it? Not at all! Will I spend my money on the 3DS just for the Kingdom Hearts game? Absolutely! Why? Because I love the series, I love the characters, and I love the storyline. Furthermore, I will buy it because it IS the next game after KH2. Sure, KH3 is to come after. But KH3D is, timeline wise, AFTER KH2, therefore making it FINALLY a continuation in the series rather then prequels and fillers.
