Nightfall: Chapter 2
Two years after the events of Dream Drop Distance, the Darkness became so great that it swallowed the worlds, locking them away within its merciless abyss.
Twilight Town, now covered in eternal night, stands as one of last Sanctuaries of Light. It is where players begin their journey.
Ever resourceful, the Moogles have created a safe place for refugees. They have charged the Denizens of Light with finding Castle Oblivion: it holds a key to the puzzle of the lost worlds.
But within the dark shadows of the sanctuary world a powerful dark force still looms, waiting to strike. Each survivor must choose whether to go to Castle Oblivion or stay behind to protect the world from the dragon that lurks in the shadows.
Power(s): Kuu is a world-hopper - since childhood, he has been travelling from world to world on an irregular basis, learning about the various worlds he encounters. He travels to different worlds through the use of a charm given to him by his mother in Radiant Garden, which is actually a Star Shard that she found in the aftermath of the meteor shower that occurred after Xenahort opened the door to the heart of the world. Due to this, he has a wide knowledge spanning much of the Realm of Light, and is well-versed in the cultures of many different worlds. However, he had until recently no idea how to use the Star Shard, and neither did he know that the charm is a Star Shard and the reason for him being able to traverse different worlds. This resulted in him disappearing randomly over time and reappearing in a different world. Due to him not using the Star Shard without even a single conscious thought of intention, his Star Shard activated over long periods of time - usually a year or more. His erratic travelling background also means that he doesn't have a defined home, and is often forced to avoid talking in detail about his history. He is also burdened with a sense of missing identity - due to the fact that his past is made up of so many different cultures and backgrounds, it is difficult for him to define what he really is, where he's from and where he truly belongs. He has recently been taught how to use the Star Shard by King Mickey, and is currently able to traverse different worlds by will. He is now teaching himself to harness its powers with a higher level of control over distance, time and the degree of light suffusion while in transition.
As a person, Kuu has the ability to learn abnormally quickly - he is able to take in unusually large amounts of information at once, and mentally digest it in a very short amount of time. What may take someone years he can potentially learn in weeks, and can quickly notice and analyse things which others would easily overlook. This is due to the exceptionally large latent magical reservoir he has, which has not been cultivated - the older he grows without using magic, the more it pushes against its containment i.e. his physical body. In order to compensate for this large mass of unused energy, the magic is automatically channelled into accelerating his sensory and mental functions, resulting in his acute analytical mind. He has used the superior processing power of his brain to obtain a great deal of knowledge throughout his travels, as well as helping him develop a rather distinct set of skills.
However, while his vast pool of information and extraordinary mental capacity do make him highly perceptive and intelligent, it does take tolls on him physically - if faced with too much information, he begins to feel dizzy and his nose begins to bleed, and he has a tendency of being frequently tired, often falling asleep at inopportune moments. This makes him somewhat unreliable as a source of information as he may often lose consciousness before he finishes relaying the piece of knowledge he is requested to impart. He is also sometimes finds it difficult to learn things without guidance, particularly for completely alien concepts such as more complex emotions and the objects subject to them (such as girls, which he deems exceedingly simple and yet incomprehensibly complicated). This is also one of the reasons why he has never learnt how to use his Star Shard (nor discovered what it is called or how it works).
Additionally, despite his brainpower being a valuable asset in intellectual improvement, it is not quite as useful in improving his physical abilities, and for training requiring a certain level of concentration (such as a martial discipline), he is easily distracted by everything else, and is consequently left tired and sleepy before he even begins to train due to the strain on his mind. If not for his ability to quickly comprehend and implement at least the theories of the physical manoeuvre in question, it is likely that he would take a longer time than the average person. In order to limit the amount of information he takes in, he wears a pair of glasses that blur his vision, making it more difficult for him to process every single detail he sees.
Kuu's inter-world (albeit accidental) travels have given him a unique skillset - he spent two years in the lost city of Atlantis, where he learnt the linguistic abilities of the Atlantean people, the advantage of their root dialect and his own intellect combining to give him a degree of proficiency in almost every language of the world. While he is not particularly physically imposing, he spent a year training with the monks of Fabul on the Blue Planet, where he excelled in running away from doing chores, resulting in masterful skills at leaping through windows, climbing over walls and vaulting over obstacles. This was compounded with two years of his childhood training in the Land of Dragons where he was placed in a camp to become a soldier (his least favourite part, since he was forced to learn how to fight while asleep, since he couldn't stay awake). This gave him a high level of adeptness in Chinese martial arts and the ability to fight when blindfolded (this actually helped since he couldn't take in as much information) and while asleep, although he was involuntarily warped out of the world before he could get the chance to graduate into the army.
His travels also took him to Twilight Town, where he apprenticed himself to Elmina, the Moogle in charge of the Synthesis Workshop there. He learned how synthesis worked, although he did not possess the skills or magic to actually perform the synthesis process. In conjunction with his magical knowledge, he is able to form enchantments on various charms (such as a linking enchantment on wayfinders), the application of synthesis materials to certain objects and the ability to draw power from synthesis materials to strengthen his own magic. During his stay at his most recent world, Radiant Garden, he has been studying magic as well as he is able, mainly from books and from watching others use magic. Due to his single-minded dedication to the use of magic as a malleable art dependant on one's knowledge and imagination, he has become extremely adept at the art of chaining, combining and manipulating spells (helped by his knowledge of synthesis), often to create his own. While his ability to weave magic is very advanced, the power of the spells he currently uses is still in its basic stages. He is currently capable of basic spells (Fire, Blizzard, Thunder) and some advanced healing magic (Cure, Cura), but is mainly well-versed in Haste and Aero magic (knowing both types of magic to their highest forms). His exchange with Kairi has also unlocked his hidden affinity with light, and is now capable of releasing potentially exponential amounts of light, although he is as of yet unused to using such quantities without depleting disproportionate chunks of his magic reserve. He is currently capable of charging weapons and attacks with light magic and releasing it in either its pure form or combined with his other magic attacks.
On the other hand, his near-death experience in Port Royal due to accidentally warping onto a Singaporean pirate ship being attacked by the Royal Navy embedded in him a deep-set fear of drowning, and after he was recovered by a rescue boat, he never went near water again. On another note, his subsequent occupation at Port Royal as a governor's assistant (a boy who could write was rare, after all) resulted in an accent which stayed with him for the rest of his life.
The martial art mastered by Kuu is a combination of Taijiquan and Zuiquan - with the superior offensive and defensive ability of Taijiquan and flowing, drunken unpredictability of Zuiquan, Kuu is able to launch swift, seamless attacks using either his hands, feet or sword. He calls this style Beijuanquan (Sleeping Fist), in reference to both the fact that it resembles a man fighting while sleepwalking, as well as to his somnolent tendencies. Beijuanquan involves lots of floppy, relaxed movements where the user often ends up close to or even on the floor, and is mainly a soft, countering style where movement occurs more reactively than actively, intercepting incoming attacks with countering strikes and holds.
Some of Kuu's techniques include:
Taiji Spiral A defensive technique used to parry incoming attacks, Kuu uses Aero and Haste simultaneously while spinning around. By using Haste to increase the spin, Aero's defensive capabilities are strengthened, while Kuu's spinning motion allows him strike away nearby foes with his hand or sword. Using stronger versions of Aero and Haste results in a wider range (Taiji Whorl) and greater offense and defense (Taiji Helix).
Xuanzi Aerial Effective against multiple airborne enemies, Kuu leaps from target to target while slashing, before grappling the final enemy and spiralling with them down headfirst into a full body drop. It is also effective against a single enemy if using walls, platforms or ceilings to leap from. If he misses is a target during this manoeuvre, he cannot complete it as he is unable to achieve the height required to perform the body drop.
Xuanfengjian Spinning his sword rapidly, using Haste to increase its speed, he uses the momentum to deliver a powerful cut while at the same time using Aero to release a powerful wind-based finishing slash. It can be used long-range, but it weakens the further it goes, and can be used only against a single enemy.
Xuanfeng Cross A variant of the Xuanfengjian, Kuu launches the opponent into the air and uses a butterfly kick to provided the aerial lift and rotation needed for the Xuanfengjian and delivers a horizontal cut then almost simultaneously executes a powerful upward slash to form a 'cross'. It can also be performed on an opponent who is already in the air.
Guangfengjian A variant of the Xuanfengjian, Kuu extends the blade of his sword with light, and turns twice to make two rapid revolutions before using the momentum of the turning motion to deliver a powerful slash with greater range and damage. While more powerful than the Xuanfengjian, it cannot be used as a long-range attack. Having refined his light magic in the Mu, Guangfengjian can now extend a greater length and can be used as a weapon augmentation for three posts.
Solar Wind By combining his wind and light magic, Kuu summons a spiralling tornado of light around him that shoots upwards. The diameter of the technique is roughly two metres and anything that is within the space of that area receives damage. This applies to anything that is above the circle formed by the tornado, making it an effective technique against aerial targets. Having refined his light magic in the Mu, Kuu is currently capable of using the more powerful Solar Gale, which expands the diamater of the technique to four metres and causes greater damage.
Glory When on critical health, all remaining magic is used to recover health while releasing a shockwave of light that parries away all nearby enemies. Heavier damage is caused depending on how much magic is left at the moment the ability activates. Having refined his light magic in the Mu, Glory now releases a more damaging shockwave that blinds foes upon contact, lowering their accuracy.
Corona Shot Kuu launches a spiralling barrage of light bullets that deal heavy damage to a single or small group of enemies. This is a continuous technique that can be maintained indefinitely until magic runs out or the technique is otherwise terminated. Having refined his light magic in the Mu, Kuu is currently capable of using the more powerful Corona Volley, which expands the area of effect, targeting a larger group of enemies.
Star Dash Using his Star Shard, Kuu is able to move short distances at a speed fast enough to break through World barriers. He is able to combine this with physical and magical attacks to form extremely fast and powerful combos and finishers that are very difficult to defend.
In order to use Star Dash effectively, however, Kuu must get a very clear idea of where he is going to, and as such, he requires to time to get a firm hold over his surroundings. This means that this move is difficult to do straight away in a place he has never been before, and almost impossible to execute in the dark. To compensate, Kuu almost always removes his spectacles to use techniques using the Star Shard, but overuse of the combination of processing each and every route while simultaneously attacking and keeping track of his movements using his eyes takes a physical toll, limiting his use of Star Shard-based techniques to five per thread. He can use the Star Dash on its own an unlimited number of times, however.
Ars Astrorum Using the Star Shard, Kuu makes a series of arcing warps combined with physical attacks to deliver an incredibly fast combo that strikes relentlessly from all directions. Its almost untraceable speed, along with Kuu's pinpoint route-plotting for each individual warp makes this technique highly difficult to defend against or avoid. However, this is traded for attack power, as it is almost impossible for Kuu to have enough time to put enough strength and momentum into each and every strike when delivered at such an insane attack rate, and takes the majority of his concentration in maintaining its speed and accuracy. As with all of Kuu's techniques using the Star Shard, it can only be used as one of five Star Shard-based techniques per thread limit.
Starfell Kuu leaps upwards, surrounding himself in a powerful shield of light and then warps downwards at his target. Upon the moment of impact, he explodes the shield outwards, combining with the force of the warp speed to cause devastating damage on the target and all surrounding enemies. Its sheer speed and power makes this move highly difficult to evade or shake off, but the linear nature of this attack makes it easy to predict, allowing enemies to take defensive measures, making this technique most effective as a finisher. As with all of Kuu's techniques using the Star Shard, it can only be used as one of five Star Shard-based techniques per thread limit.
Sleeping Toss Kuu delivers a scissor sweep to knock the opponent onto their backs. He then immediately seizes them by the collar, and vaults over their chest to land on his back, using the momentum to roll them onto his bent knee, which he straightens to launch them into the air, leaving them open for an aerial attack such as a Xuanfeng Cross. Kuu frequently uses this move in his sleep, resulting in him often waking up next to an unfortunate attacker in the morning.
Fitful Splash Kuu repeatedly launches himself off the ground with his body parallel to the floor, while spiralling constantly to attack with his sword, hands and feet. The bouncing motion makes him a more difficult target to hit and allows him to move from place to place while attacking multiple enemies. Aero can be used to increase spin, damage and speed. Kuu's movements during this manoeuvre is very difficult to keep from becoming erratic.
Wakeful Edge Balancing on one foot, Kuu raises his leg and stretches out his sword arm so that his body resembles a top. He then spins rapidly on that one foot, and moves through ranks of enemies, cutting them almost like a buzzsaw. Aero can be used to increase the spin and damage, as well as draw in enemies into the attack so that they can be set up for a finisher. This can only be used against enemies at ground level.
Slumbering Crane Kuu rapidly twirls his sword while drilling into the ground, the resultant whirlwind drawing foes in to be within slashing distance. Due to the eye of the whirlwind being slightly below the ground, they are also dragged down onto the floor. This move is usually followed by Crane Awakes. Slumbering Crane and Crane Awakes cannot be used in the same post.
Crane Awakes Leaping up into the air, Kuu spirals downwards rapidly, using his sword as a propeller to summon a tornado that slams into the ground with massive force. This results in heavy damage to anything directly below Kuu while the tornado blows outwards causing damage to all surrounding foes while also sending them flying into the surrounding walls to cause further damage. Using it after Slumbering Crane ensures that all nearby foes are directly underneath Kuu for maximum effectiveness, while also having the additional effect of damaging any foes underground due to the wind ripping through the ground using the pit created by Slumbering Crane. Slumbering Crane and Crane Awakes cannot be used in the same post.
Final Rest Kuu spins on one foot in one direction while spinning his sword in the other, creating two tornados that cross over each other, drawing all nearby opponents up into the air. Kuu then rides the column of wind to deliver a rapid slashing combo to the enemies caught up in the wind, rising higher and higher before drilling down through the enemies sword-first while using the entire force of the double tornado focused onto his blade to increase the spin and power of the attack. Upon imact, the whirlwind bursts apart in an explosion of cutting blades of wind, damaging all surrounding enemies and further damaging those caught up in the initial tornado. This is currently Kuu's most powerful finisher, and drains him of all his magic.
Dark Mode While unable to control it, Kuu is capable of transforming into a dark version of himself for up to 5 posts when subject to immense physical or emotional duress. When in this form, he is incapable of using any of his previous techniques, and unlocks a new set of dark-based skills. His physical abilities are enhanced and his senses heightened, greatly shortening his reaction time and raising his attack rate and power to inhuman levels, while also granting him almost complete magical immunity and allowing him to strike continuously without a cooldown rate.
However, he develops an acute weakness to light magic, and is unable to form a coherent battle plan as his entire concentration is placed on preventing himself from attacking allies and to regain control. In this form, all in the vicinity are potential enemies, and he targets them according to what his darkness deems to be of the most threat to it. Upon the dissipation of Dark Mode, all of Kuu's magic is drained and he is placed in debilitating pain due to the exposure to the light he uses in order to restrain the darkness.
Dark Cross [DARK MODE ONLY] A technique only useable when in Dark Mode, the user makes several rapid passes at a group of enemies while attacking in transit with slashes augmented with darkness, repeatedly moving from target to target at an incredibly fast speed until all enemies are destroyed, making it an effective evasive manoeuvre as well as offensive. This can also be executed on a single target.
Darkfell [DARK MODE ONLY] A technique only useable when in Dark Mode, the user surrounds themselves in an aura of darkness and makes use of a Dark Portal to teleport directly above the opponent before dropping down on them with immense force while exploding the aura outwards, combining with the force of the drop speed to cause devastating damage on the target and all surrounding enemies. Due to the unexpected angle of attack and speed, this technique is very difficult to avoid or predict. It does however, leaves the user in a window of vulnerability directly after the technique where it is extremely difficult for him to counter any attacks that follow immediately afterwards.
Dark Portal [DARK MODE ONLY] A technique only useable when in Dark Mode, the user summons a portal to teleport to any place on the battlefield instantly. Technically, this can also be used to traverse worlds, although this never occurs due to the unstable nature of Dark Mode, preventing the user from mustering enough concentration to open a portal to a distance much further than fifty metres.
Zanmato [DARK MODE ONLY] A technique only useable when in Dark Mode, the user surrounds his weapon in darkness and shears through a group of enemies in a straight line with great speed and power. This move can instantly incapacitate a target, or if the defence of the target in question has been magically or otherwise enhanced, break through all forms of armour and barriers to effectively lower the target's defence to solely that of their own physical constitution. It does however, leaves the user in a window of vulnerability directly after the technique where it is extremely difficult for him to counter any attacks that follow immediately afterwards.
Shadow Flare [DARK MODE ONLY] A technique only useable when in Dark Mode, the user launches a barrage of dark spheres that home in on their enemies and explode upon impact, causing heavy damage on all foes in the vicinity of the explosion. The spheres cause disorientation without fail upon contact.
Dark Aeroga [DARK MODE ONLY] A technique only useable when in Dark Mode, the user summons a shadowy tornado that surrounds him, protecting him from enemy attacks while throwing back all surrounding foes and causing heavy damage with blades of dark wind that home in on their targets that may also disorientate them, depending on their strength and magical resistance.
Weapon(s): - Sword of Remembrance - A unique sword synthesised as a parting gift from his moogle caretaker in Twilight Town (although he later discovered that she had taken half his wages from working at her shop to pay for it), it was synthesised using Orichalcum and Remembrance, Gale, Spirit, Lucid and Energy Crystals. The Gale and Spirit Crystals allow the sword to summon magical winds by simply injecting magic into it, while the Energy Crystal makes the magic required to cast far less. The Lucid Crystals make the blade slightly invisible when in motion, making it harder to predict its attacks. The Remembrance Crystal sparks Kuu's memory, making it easier for him to fight using body memory when asleep, and allowing his organisation of his thoughts and memories with somewhat less strain. The Orichalcum strengthens the recollective and magic attributes of the sword, as well as making it extremely durable. It resembles a jian sword used in the Land of Dragons, and has a pair of silver crane's wings forming the hilt, a red tassel adorned with a Gale Shard and a slender blade a touch narrower than the standard military issue. Kuu considers this sword his second most valuable possession.
- Star Amulet - A silver charm given to him by his mother which in fact encases a Star Shard, and is the reason for his random world-hopping. It is the only memento he owns of his mother, and he holds onto it in hopes that he will one day be able to return to find his parents. It is shaped like the symbol of Radiant Garden - a compass-like emblem with the north point replaced by a heart formed out of two curling loops, the centre of which encases a slightly luminescent yellow jewel shaped like a five-point star. It hangs off a silver chain that never leaves Kuu's neck. This is Kuu's most valuable possession.
- Wayfinder - A traditional good-luck charm for travellers made from Thalassa Shells found on Destiny Islands. It represents an unbreakable bond between two people. It is made of five green-tipped Thalassa Shells attatched together in a star-like shape, hanging off a knotted white cord with a pearly bead. It has a silver heart-shaped token in the middle, in which a single crystal-clear jewel is embedded. It was made for him by Kairi, a girl he knew from Destiny Islands and enables a Link Surge with its paired wayfinder (Kairi's) which allows him to access some of her power to compound their own. When activated, it unlocks the following abilities for three posts without draining their magic:
Darkness Recognition - An extra sensory of detecting the presence of darkness including heartless. Shima - An extension of being able to incorporating splash with any attack; since splash is a flexible funnel of water it has versitility with usage. The power and range of splash increases once learning water spells. Aesther - A combustion of light that radiates outward with cutting whirlwinds. The light can stun stronger heartless momentarily, while vanquishing the small fries. Fortunately Kuu won't be negatively affected by fatigue of the extensive use of light.
Appearance: Kuu has originally black hair which has been dyed various colours over time - it is currently dyed silver, as it was when he was in Atlantis, which contrasts to his mildly tanned skin. His hair falls down to his neck in straight spikes with a simple ponytail bound on the upper half of the back of his head, and a fringe frequently drifting over one eye. A slight figure, he is neither imposing, neither is he particularly physically strong, and his arms and legs are more slender than bulky. His eyes are dark, inquisitive and intelligent behind his glasses, giving him a rather academic and often bookish air, though they often have a sense of drowsiness about them and alternates from blinking very quickly to very slowly. They are, however, not above becoming very sharp when irate. He is not short, but neither is he particularly tall - just short enough to be anonymous and just tall enough to avoid unwanted comments.
His outfit has changed drastically and frequently due to the numerous cultures he was made to adapt to - he currently dresses in a white shirt with a Chinese-style collar and long sleeves with a pale green trim stylised with a wave-like pattern, over which he wears a sleeveless zipped-up V-neck black top with a wide, jade-coloured stripe lined with white going horizontally across his chest, with two belt-like bands coming from the back to either side of his stomach, crossing over with a pair of shorter straps near the ends. On his hands he wears a pair of black fingerless gloves with metal padding. He wears a pair of loose black linen trousers that end halfway down his calves over which he wears a set of lightweight metal plates from a suit of dark green Chinese armour which hang over the side of his thighs, secured by a belt with a loop-shaped buckle. On his feet he wears a set of thick-soled black sandals designed almost like a pair of boots, reaching up to mid-calf length and only showing the toes and heel, with a zip on the side of each sandal. At the back of his hip, he wears a dark green belt-bag with a black strap which contains various essentials. Around his neck is a silver charm shaped like a the Radiant Garden heart within which a star-shaped jewel is encased. Hanging off his waist in a loop is what he calls his memory chain, a chain upon which various mementos from his travels hang - an Atlantean crystal, a Fabul monk's earring, a silver coin, a Star Charm, a jade bead, and a seashell.
Personality: Anyone who meets Kuu for the first time will most often say that his most defining feature is his drowsiness. Known to drift off despite being in the middle of a conversation (even when he's the one speaking), it is difficult to uncover his persona when most of the time spent with him results in him sleeping. However, when he is awake, he is highly intellectual and insightful youth, and is a ready voice to provide sound advice to those who request it. While his sleepiness and somewhat distracted mannerism can be interpreted as indifference, it is simply that he cannot stop thinking, and therefore action consequently takes second priority (action involving speaking, hearing, moving and walking), which makes sleeping the most convenient way for him to think without interruption. While his intelligence and advice may produce many admirers, his outwardly tired demeanour makes his friends very few.
Although it might not be false to say that Kuu has to some extent distanced himself somewhat from commitment to emotion, he is by no means unfeeling. While his mind is exceedingly analytical, it is not purely scientific, and he still holds much value in the aesthetic evaluation of life, as can be seen by his interminable desire to work towards others' happiness. He finds great amusement in solving problems, and easing another's sadness in the process only serves to heighten that sense of satisfaction. It is also a response to a feeling of desperate loneliness incurred by the lack of a home, the lack of a name and the inability to share his identity as a world traveller to those he meets in fear that he will be thought of as insane and treated with animosity. He believes that it is this loneliness that truly defines who he is, and that in order to find his true identity, he needs to learn as much as he can about the world. This is one of the most fundamental ideals that drives him to know - using his intelligence and superior processing power of his brain to discover everything there is to know, and in turn discover himself.
Perhaps due to his intelligence and his desire to learn, ignorance is one of the things which irks Kuu most. Things said and done without thought, reason or any real ground irritates him and he refuses to believe that there is any justification to ignorance, as mistakes are things done without intention, while acting despite not knowing what to do means that the person in question has not thought about the consequences. Living with the fear that he could disappear any moment, the idea of living in disregard of consequence is an alien and highly vexing concept for Kuu. The tendency of ignorant people to immediately see him as an aggressor due to his academic idiosyncrasy makes it difficult for him to reason effectively, so he is often forced to show his hand in a more curt and verbally brutal fashion, giving him a reputation as being provocative and insensitive.
Original World: Radiant Gardens Current Residing World: Radiant Gardens History/Background:
R a d i a n t · G a r d e n 'Whenever you hold this, think of me, and I'll come and find you.'
Born in Radiant Garden, he was raised as an ordinary boy in an ordinary family - the mother was a nurse and the father was a technician providing equipment and accessories for others. Protected by the all-encompassing knowledge of Ansem the Wise, he grew up to be a healthy six-year-old child. One night, a meteor storm hit Radiant Garden, and one such meteor fell into the garden of their house. Extracted from it was a peculiar jewel, which his mother gave to her husband to turn it into an charm. After its completion, it was given to her son as a keepsake, telling him to keep it with him always, and as long as he has it, she will be able to find him. Unknown to both of them, the jewel used was in fact a Star Shard which had the power to potentially transport the user to other worlds - though without knowledge and control, the shard would run rampant and transport him to a completely random location at a time not of his choosing. This charm meant to connect mother to child would in fact ultimately separate them. A year passed, and unbeknownst to the residents of Radiant Garden, the dark experiments of Xenahort continued and eventually resulted in flooding the world with Heartless, and as the chaos began, a boy suddenly vanished before his parents' eyes...
A t l a n t i s 'This child was sent to us, born from light - he is no ordinary child.'
The boy reappeared in the strange, ruined city of Atlantis with no memories of his home world, surrounded by people with tanned skin and silver hair, despite their youthful appearances. He was taken to the king, who was persuaded to allow the boy to live, and due to his young age, be cared for as one of their own as long as he wished to stay. His hair was dyed silver and a crystal bestowed upon him. Given the name 'Kio', based from what they could understand of what he claimed his name to be, he was raised as a child of Atlantis. He underwent learning the linguistic skill of the inhabitants, and his teachers were stunned to discover how quickly he picked up on their language. He lived with the hunter who had found him first, and from him learnt the art of the huntsman, learning how to wield the spear, how to fish, and to navigate the cliffs and rocks of the Atlantean terrain - although his age prevented him from becoming particularly proficient at any of them. He was with his foster father on a fishing trip when his second warp occurred.
B l u e · P l a n e t 'What is your name? ... What's that? Cuckoo?'
Kio was found on Mt Hobs by two monks of Fabul. Not knowing what else to do with him, as they had never heard of a placed called 'Atlantis' or 'Radiant Garden', they decided to enrol him as a monk to train with them. His silver hair was shaved and he was introduced to the serene yet disciplined lifestyle of the warrior monks of Fabul as the apprentice 'Cuckoo'. Since he was only nine years old, he learned only the basic grasps of martial arts, and was often told that he simply lacked the patience (which he knew was a better way to say 'ability to remain awake for extended periods of time') to progress to the degree of proficiency he was potentially able to achieve. He was teased by the other disciples due to this, and was frequently assigned to doing menial and time-consuming chores, in which he spent most of his time dozing or staring at the surrounding buildings, resulting in him achieving a somewhat useless mastery over the knowledge of the architecture of Fabul. A year after he had arrived, they discovered an abandoned broom in the middle of the courtyard, with Cuckoo nowhere to be found.
P o r t · R o y a l 'What do we do with him, Captain? He sure don't talk like a pirate.'
In what would be one of the most traumatic warps of his life, Cuckoo arrived on a Singaporean pirate ship which was under the timely attack of a Royal Navy galleon. He was found half-drowned by a boat sent out by the ship and picked up due to his young age. Still in his Fabul monk's robes and shaved head, the sailors thought that he was one of the Singaporean slaves. Surprised that he was able to speak their language so fluently, they questioned what to do with him, but eventually decided to bring him back to Port Royal. There, he was passed over to the commodore in charge of the port town, and after showing proof of his literacy, he was given to one of the port officials who employed him as a scribe in return for food and a place to live. He was continued to be called 'Cuckoo', and spoke often with the soldiers who had first saved his life at sea, who frequently treated him to stories of their travels. When he looks back at his time in this world, he would often think that they were the best moments he had at Port Royal (as well as being given the chance to grow out his hair again). While walking near the cliffs, he leant over the side, trying to see how far down it was, when he appeared to lose his balance and fell through the air...
T w i l i g h t · T o w n 'Okay, kupo. You can work here for now, kupo. Your name can be... Mokupo, kupo.'
Landing in Twilight Town, looking completely out of place in his 18th-century clothes, he entered a nearby shop where he met the moogle Elmina, who commented that he had the air of a world-traveller (if his current attire wasn't enough to go by). After discovering that he had nowhere to stay and no-one he knows, Elmina agreed to allow him to work at her synthesis shop (very likely due to the potential an ignorant world traveller could have for her business, due to his ability to draw to him otherworldly items in his travels). Giving him the name 'Mokupo', shortened to 'Kuu', he was enrolled at the school in Twilight Town. Being placed in an ordinary school situation for the first time in four years, he had no idea how he should really behave, and he spent the first term observing his fellow students in order to work out a set of rules to sketch out the social structure of his new environment. After a quiet and distanced first year, Kuu managed to break into his second year at Twilight Town, while the previous two worlds he had only managed to stay for roughly a year in each. Instead of after-school activities, he helped out with various chores around the synthesis shop, in the process learning much about the various materials and processes which was used by moogles to create items. Not being a moogle, he was unable to actually synthesise anything without his guardian's help, but was nevertheless fascinated with the idea that what occurred in a moogle's hands was somehow magic - something which he had only a small experience of (he had briefly encountered something like it in Atlantis, and Fabul, being a nation of fighting monks, had few magicians). It was also in Twilight Town that he made his first real friend - a girl named Olette from the year below who was the very first person he could work up the courage to talk to after simply observing for a month or so. After an awkward beginning, he began to learn how to speak like an ordinary teenager after copying her relaxed way of talking, and eventually prevailed upon himself to invite her round to his house, where he introduced her to the synthesising workshop (it was the only thing he really knew and could show at that time). In turn, she showed him to the Sandlot, where he met others and his circle of friends began to grow. Other than for a few neighbours, a couple of classmates, Olette and the synthesis shop, his existence at Twilight Town was almost inconsequential, and yet he was happiest here than he had been for a long time. It was therefore with an unfamiliar sadness that he found himself whisked away to his next undetermined destination. He was thirteen years old.

His next warp took him to Destiny Islands, where he was discovered by a schoolteacher. Being a slightly more complicated situation before, as the schoolteacher in question was not really inclined to take him in as his guardian, he had to explain to her that he had found himself on the beach (which he did) after the ship he had been travelling on had been destroyed (half-true, it did actually happen three years previously). Eventually, he was enrolled into the school as a student and lodged in a spare room at the schoolteacher's house. It was the first time he had lived with another person (who wasn't a moogle) in an explicitly family-like setting, and he found he greatly enjoyed the warm - albeit unfamiliar - ambience shared between the two strangers. However, it wasn't all fun and games as she made sure that he kept on top of all of his schoolwork, and even with his superior learning speed, his landlady somehow managed to keep on churning out new more advanced material which took him almost beyond high-school level (a degree of intelligence which was highly unhealthy for a thirteen-year-old boy), and by the time he reached the age of fifteen, he was able to keep up with college-level worksheets in almost all his subjects, although his grades remained frustratingly low due to the fact that he constantly fell asleep during class and tests. Despite the brutal workload laid on him by his landlady, he considers his time at Destiny Islands the best years of his life. His passage into sophomore year marked the longest time he'd stayed at a single place since he'd left his original home world. He made friends at school, joined the various martial arts and athletics clubs (he could only pull off one hurdle race in the latter, since he would fall asleep and miss all his other events) and hung out with his pals at the beach. All in all, it was here that he was able to feel what he could have had if he had really been just an ordinary boy in an ordinary world. But, as fate would have it, he had a chance encounter with a red-haired girl - he remembered saying hi here and there, but a coincidental meeting on the beach resulted in them being alone for the first time. Her name was Kairi, she was two years his junior, and she was utterly intriguing - for some reason, he felt a sense of familiarity from her that he couldn't sense with anyone else, even though he barely talked to her. And he couldn't shake the niggling feeling that he had somehow seen her before - many, many years ago, long before he came to Destiny Islands. But surely that was impossible? Then she spoke, and what came out sent him reeling - talk of beyond the sea, of stars and of other worlds. She had no idea - true, she had appeared just like he did on the waves of fate, but she probably did actually come from a shipwreck somewhere. At that moment, she asked the question - one which had always been in the back of his mind somewhere, but one he had never really confronted - 'Is that where you're from, Kuu? Did you come from a star?'. He couldn't answer - what did he know of other worlds, except that he would be whisked away to one any moment? What did he know of stars, except that he could be hurtling towards one within the next week? These thoughts pervaded his mind when it occurred once more, roughly a week after his encounter with Kairi - three years was as long as his strange condition could hold out for, and one day, as he had done so many times before, he disappeared. It was the day before summer vacation ended.

Arriving in the Land of Dragons, Kuu was picked up by a conscripts cart where he was drafted into the army cadets under the name 'Xiu'. Momentarily baffled at the intense culture shock of being a high school student and then being handed a sword (a real one at that) with the instruction to swing it, it took a while for him to get back into the flow of his reality - he was a world-hopper, and this was just another world he had to adapt to. With the training he received as an apprentice in Fabul and the continuation of that training in school clubs, Xiu was able to quickly pick up how to handle the various weapons used by the Chinese army, including the sword, the spear and the bow. However, he was frequently punished for sleeping on the job, and as a result much of his training was more on focusing how to fight while asleep rather than learning how to fight at all. Despite his fast progress, his unreliability kept him back from moving up into the main army (something which he wasn't really keen on getting into anyway), and it was two years before he was allowed to be considered for the imperial examination. Conveniently, his condition activated and as he felt the now familiar rush in his ears and expanding light, he couldn't help but feel that he had narrowly escaped something that could have ended up to be quite catastrophic...
R a d i a n t · G a r d e n 'Hey, did you say that you were from around here? Huh? Ten years ago? Y-you're joking, right?'
As fate would have it, his next destination would be his home world - Radiant Garden. Looking upon his world of his birth, his previously lost memories came rushing back, and he was overwhelmed with the idea that he had - after all these years - finally returned. However, after the initial joy of returning home, he discovered that his home world had changed - no-one he recognised now walked its streets, and neither could he find his family or anyone who knew them. The streets themselves, the whole town as he had known it had been overturned, now only a twisted patchwork remnant of its former self - nothing was where it was meant to be, and nothing looked like it should have been. Looking at his reflection in the shattered window of what had been his house, he realised that he barely recognised himself. Time had flowed on without him in every world he had been in, and his transient existence in each of them meant as little as a single grain of sand washed away by the tide of inevitability. So he did the only thing he knew how to do - to learn as much as he could within this world, as he had done for all these years. He discovered the existence of 'Gummi Ships', which would allow him to travel to other worlds. He wondered if he could somehow work towards procuring one, which would be far more reliable than his own erratic warping ability. Incredibly, he learnt that his presence in Radiant Garden had travelled through Mognet and that Elmina, the moogle who had taken care of him in Twilight Town, had found where he was and left a gift for him - the Sword of Remembrance, along with a small note that explained why his wages had been so small during his time, as they were to pay for the aforementioned weapon. He also finally discovered the use of magic, and by closely watching other magicians and procuring various books, he began to teach himself as much as he could. He found to his surprise that magic came easier to him than he had expected, but he put this down to his quick learning capabilities and did not suspect the unusually abundant magic supply he possessed. Realising that there were many questions that he still had left to ask about his warping powers, the fate of his parents, the temporary loss of memories concerning Radiant Garden and the presence of Heartless, he decided the best way he could go about getting these answers was to apply to the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee, and see if he could try to gain access into some of the archives while working to help rebuild his 'home' world. Taking up the name he had used in Destiny Islands and Twilight Town, Kuu set himself to work in a shop selling books and curios while working to uncover the secrets behind the existence of other worlds, the purpose of his own existence, all of which seemed to be inexplicably linked to the mysterious presence of these rumoured 'Hearts'...
Role Playing Sample: Kuu made a noise that was halfway between a low whistle and a sigh that was desperately trying not to become a yawn too conspicuously. He blinked in a manner that was as helpfully attentive as he could manage, and made a valiant effort not to sound too obviously exasperated when he replied slowly enough to make his point and quickly enough to somewhat maintain his customer's dignity.
'Sir,' he said with restrained patience, 'I can confirm that the book you have slammed down onto the counter is indeed by the author Morgana Deathicus, and yes, I can also confirm that the title of the aforementioned book is "The Book of Endless Fun". However, may I inform you that Morgana Deathicus is in fact a pseudonym, and I can quite confidently say that she is not, in fact, a 300-year-old witch who lives in the sky and is in truth a 40-year-old woman living in the far right-hand side corner of the Borough who is - excuse me for speaking bluntly - somewhat considered to be a mad hag by the members of the neighbourhood, which may in turn explain why the book written by this particular author is so tasteless. May I also remind you that I provided you with this information beforehand in an effort to dissuade you from making a rather ill-advised purchase - the camera installed above can validate this statement.'
Kuu leant against the counter, tipping his head slightly forwards so that his eyes now looked over his glasses, revealing the full sharpness of his piercing dark gaze, and carefully watching the man's reaction as he continued steadily, 'Now that we have reached this point in the discussion, I can reveal that yes, I did know that the author of this book was your wife, but I did not tell you the other day at my discretion in order to maintain a contractual agreement with your significant other not to reveal her identity to the public, which is now void since you have evidently figured that out yourself. Since I have given you all this information before your purchase, and also due to the personal nature of your reasons for your return, I cannot be held responsible for your displeasure with the contents and/or background of your book. Additionally, I am legally obliged to point out that in throwing that book onto the counter, you have damaged the spine of the hardback cover, which means that it is not in retail condition - as such, I am unable to refund that book in any form. If you will continue to be disruptive to the running of this store, then I am afraid that I will have to politely request that you leave the premises.'
