ORIGINAL or CANON: Original
What was the inspiration for them / do they embody a particular feeling or emotion?Maya was originally created as a more submissive and subdued character, a fresh young face ready to start anew, but in the years since her previous incarnation, the character has evolved to being more assertive and confident, and I felt she would fill an empty leadership role that we seem to have here. Her charisma and charm will be key in organizing the wielders of light, or at least I would like to hope so. Time will tell.
Name: Maya of the Viera
Nickname: The Judge of Roses
Age: 36
Gender: Female
Species: Viera
Being Type: Somebody
Position: Lawful Good
Current Primary Objective: Eradication of the darkness, safety of the worlds, organization of a military force to combat any enemies of the light
Learning type: Tends to learn from experience
Home World: The Feol Woods, Ivalice
Passive: Heartborn Sanctum
Weapon: Pride and Power – A singular glaive with long talon-like blades, made of metal and the mechanisms intended for activiating the separated mode. When separated, the blades curve into sickles, one for each hand. A unique modification to hers is two slots intended for Magicite shards, crushable with the press of a button to induce a Mist frenzy. Also convenient to hold Materia augments.
Magicite count - 1
Appearance: Maya stands at a height of 6’ 3” with heels, and has skin that’s coated in a chocolate brown fur. She likes to keep her hair about shoulder length, and often down and swept to the side, though in her lazier moments she wears it in a bun. In her battle attire, she wears a full suit of armor embroidered with floral patterns, though she tends to go helmetless. Outside of battle, she opts for a more formal outfit, a dress tunic tailored specifically to her, and a knee-length skirt, often with thigh-length stockings. The outfit, though formal, is cut to be more appealing, and if she so desires, revealing. Three inch heels support the natural oddity that is Viera feet, allowing her to walk without trouble. Her eyes are green-blue, and her ears add another 7 inches to her height.
Personality: Once a timid soul, years of battle and discipline have hardened the Viera Judge, and she has matured from a young Viera to be much more proud and brave. She now walks with an air of authority, though she hardly ever barks orders. Still soft-spoken, she chooses to lead with kindness and example, only dealing out her harsh side when absolutely necessary. She has also picked up a knack for diplomacy, having worked for Lord Larsa in many negotiations with other nations to assemble forces against the Heartless, even speaking to Princess Ashe of Rabanastre herself. She is very proud of who she is, and has an abundance of confidence. This is her greatest strength, as she can use this confidence in ways she found beneficial to her. She sways favors if she can with diplomacy and bodily appeal, and though a moral person, has rumors going about or certain favors for good enough deals. She doesn’t seem to hide this, but instead empowers herself with it, and it shows in the way she talks and walks.
Natural Affinities/Abilities/Skills: Natural Abilities- Viera Reflexes - As a race of the Wood, Viera are naturally more agile and swift than humans, though this benefit is lost when she dons her armor.
- Spiritual Hearing - Viera hearing is so acute, they can hear the souls of the world and those who never truly left it.
- Mist Frenzy - When exposed to a high enough concentration of Magicite residue, Viera enter what is known as a Mist frenzy, turning them from a peaceful race to a ferocious enemy, capable of breaking metal shackles and killing armored foes with single blows. The drawback is the inability to discern friend from foe, and as such should only be used voluntarily as a last resort. Though used voluntarily by Maya at multiple points in combat, she only chooses to do it when no one or the bare amount of allies are around her.
Powers- Flare - Black magick that has no element. Targets one foe with a blast of magical energy.
- Cure - White magick capable of knitting up open flesh wounds and healing internal damage.
- Quickening: White Flare Burst - Used typically as a last-ditch effort, Maya cloaks her blades in Flare magic, and swings them, emitting a burst of non-elemental magic around her in a circular wave. Usable once per day, and takes much out of her.
Limitations/Drawbacks: Maya's greatest flaw is her confidence. She knows that she's good at what she does, and sometimes overconfidence gets her in sticky situations. She is also easily attracted to people she finds interesting, and if done subtly enough, she could be twisted around somebody's finger. She also refuses to sacrifice her soldiers, and will comply with orders if they are endangered. Finally, if a concentrated substitute for Mist were to be found, it could be weaponized against her to induce a Mist frenzy.
History: Maya is the result of two rouge viera, one Veena (her mother) and the other a Rava (her father), falling in love and mating. For the first 5 (viera) years of her life, she spent it with her mother, living in Dalmasca around the humes. There she learned the ways of the humes, which seemed alien to her in the fact that she was seen as an oddity. She learned technological skills from her mother, who worked in a garage on technology. She and her mother became very close, and Maya loved her very much. But her life in Dalmasca was cut short as her mother was killed by an unknown hume. Her father took her in, returning to the forest where he lived. There, she was exposed to a new kind of lifestyle, that of the Wood. Her father taught her viera ways and encouraged her to learn magic, focusing on earth magic. She spent a majority of her life in the forest with her father, content with this lifestyle. Along the way, she self-taught herself how to cast certain magic spells and learned how to interperet the language of the Wood, intent on becoming a master of the spirit world. Her father gave her a staff as a present that he had found in an abandoned hume city, and it became her main and only weapon.
But she did not realize the ripples that went through the viera. They saw her as an abomination, and when she turned 12, ran her out of the village, forcing her to go back to Dalmasca. In the process, her father died protecting her, considered a traitor. A year of her life was spent wandering the hume world in despair, affected by the death of her father. She didn’t know, or even care, where she went, she just went on. A few caring humes fed her and allowed her to stay with them, which helped her gain her sanity back bit by bit. Eventually, she regained her sanity and returned to Dalmasca, where she hunkered down and made a living fixing mechanics, which she had picked up when living with her mother. Eventually, she earned enough to open her own shop, where she could work on hume appliances. She did this because it reminded her of her mother, but she would do nightly trips to the woods and would connect with nature, feeling the calmest she had in a long time.
One day, as she worked in her shop, three hume men came in and asked for a repair, which she gladly did. But, when she got to work, they assaulted her and took everything of value to her. Once again betrayed by those she thought she could trust, she ran to the woods, where she tried to starve herself to death. But, when her hunger was immense, she found herself overtaken by the Mist, and among the Mist came into contact with a number of shadowy creatures, who dragged her into a shadowy pit, and to the adventure of a lifetime.
She awoke in Traverse Town, a shamble of a world that acted as a realm between. There, she met many new people, including several other Viera, and learned of the Heartless threat. She fought alongside the wielders of the light, traveling to other worlds ith them to spread the word of the Heartless threat, as well as to hone her skills and find her home. Eventually, a year into her absence from home, they arrived in Ivalice, and she stayed behind as an envoy for the Guardians of the Worlds in her world, informing the now prince of the Dalmascan Empire, Larsa, of the threat. He took her in as an informant against the Heartless threat, and she worked her way up to his trust, and proved her improved prowess in combat. In her time working for Larsa, she developed her own signature fighting style: the use of concentrated Mist in the form of Magicite, that she could crush to induce her Mist frenzy at will. As a reward for her assistance in the battles against the darkness, as well as her devotion to the Empire, she was granted the privilege of ascension to the title of Judge. Assuming the moniker of Judge of Roses, she was given a custom glaive and set of armor, and was given a sub-division of soldiers to lead, who operated out of Rabanastre. For near a year, she held the front line against the Heartless, and was an up-and-rising name in the Imperial city. However, all peace does not last, and the Nightfall began with a large onslaught of Heartless. She fount alongside her troops to the bitter end, but succumbed to the darkness eventually.
But her fight wasn’t over, and she found herself waking in a vaguely familiar landscape: Twilight Town. The area around her was destroyed, and she smelled the hints of Mist about her. Gathering her bearing, she noted that the Magicite in her glaive had been crushed, and noted large gouges in the buildings near her. It wasn’t difficult to conclude that she had been on a Mist rampage at some point, but everything from falling to the darkness was a blank. Instead of making her presence known immediately, scared of what friends might be found alive (or not at all), she stayed on the outskirts of town, only showing up to help fight off Heartless.
Role Playing Sample:
Port Royal. A city of an older time, pulled into interaction with the new age with the alliances forged against the darkness. A world of diplomats and pirates alike, and very lively. It was almost reminiscent to some of the port cities in Ivalice Maya could remember, though those often smelled better than this. The stench of grog barely matched the sweaty musk.
Nose crumpling, she walked past many a tavern where sailors and pirates alike jeered at her, complimenting on her dress and asking how much for a visit from a Commodore like her. Wearing the garb of the higher class from this world wasn't exactly her choice, but she best not risk a pirate seeing her as something foreign and exotic and tying her up. Or, at the very least, trying. Still, tucking one's ears under a tricorn hat was rather uncomfortable.
She walked a little less tensely when she got into the higher class district, and upon spotting her meeting place, ducked into the door, looking at the quieter ambiance of the bar. There was still patrons drinking at this time of day, and some did appear to be of a less honest profession, though they at least looked recently bathed. Her attention was taken by the approach of a smaller figure, and she watched the young woman carefully, from down her nose.
"The Commodore will speak with you now, ma'am. He has been awaiting your presence."
"Very well. For your trouble, and a bottle of the finest wine you can get me."
The girl looked at the gold deposited in her hand, before stowing it away somewhere in her dress with a nod. She led the viera deeper into the establishment, and to the second story, where they stopped before an ornately carved door. With a sigh, she checked to make sure her hat was on well, and undid a button on her coat, before turning the knob and opening the door.
It baffled her to see nobody in the room, but she let out a low sigh when she felt metal against the back of her neck and the click of a hammer.
"And to what do I owe the pleasure of this?"
The commodore, powdered wig and all, chuckled, and nudged her forward. She resisted rolling her eyes at him, and walked further into the room, making a show of sitting in a nearby chair, casually. He kept the gun leveled on her.
"It appears we have a new business arrangement, and you play a very key part in it. We've heard reports of what you are, and rumors go fast. Collectors like a beauty like you."
His face went from amused to angry when she laughed at him, taking the glass decanter from the table. Whiskey, ut it would do. She poured herself a glass, and took a small sip of it.
"And you think I would come so quietly. And here I thought we would have a quiet talk over wine. My mood is spoiled, Commodore, so I'll just warn you now. You want to put that gun down."
"And why would I want to do that? What we need isn't your help, we have the most powerful fleet in the entirety of the world. Any opposition is to fall at our cannons. No, what we need is money, and your alliance promises none of that. So, no, I'm not putting the gun down."
With a light laugh, she downed the glass of whiskey, and crossed one leg over the other.
"And you think you're the only alliance I've made in this world, Commodore? If I'm not mistaken, you aren't the strongest naval force to exist. I take it you've heard of the rumors of Davy Jones, no? Word on the street is that your company took a substantial hit trying to control him, and now you're scrambling. We refuse to make a military move on this world, but if I were to disappear, you would find our allegiances changing to something a little more... Renegade. You see, where I'm from, Sky Pirates are employees of the government, and I know how they work here, as well. A little bit of thigh, a kiss or two, and they're wrapped around your finger, snug as a ring. Yet I came to you not because you have their manpower, but because you can. Sadly, it seems like I was mistaken, unless you can convince me otherwise."
She saw the gun waver for the briefest moment, and smirked.
"You are under our juristiction as the East India Trading Company. To ally with pirates would be a declaration of treason, and as per our agreement, is grounds for execution but the gallows. You will comply, or-"
"Then shoot me."
He stammered as he was interrupted.
"Beg your pardon?"
"Shoot me. You talk too long, and I've no time for a hanging. Shoot me, or sit down and talk like a sensible man. I'm impatient."
