Nightfall: Chapter 2
Two years after the events of Dream Drop Distance, the Darkness became so great that it swallowed the worlds, locking them away within its merciless abyss.
Twilight Town, now covered in eternal night, stands as one of last Sanctuaries of Light. It is where players begin their journey.
Ever resourceful, the Moogles have created a safe place for refugees. They have charged the Denizens of Light with finding Castle Oblivion: it holds a key to the puzzle of the lost worlds.
But within the dark shadows of the sanctuary world a powerful dark force still looms, waiting to strike. Each survivor must choose whether to go to Castle Oblivion or stay behind to protect the world from the dragon that lurks in the shadows.
"They're locking up the sun, the light of reason gone, And hope has been succesfully undone The question's burning on, where is it coming from, No one seems to know the monster born..." -Poets of the Fall, "Locking Up The Sun"
Rook had been starring in the direction of the Castle of Abyss for some time now. He couldn't discern why, but across the Dark City's horizon, he could barely make out its feint outline against the backdrop of night. He didn't even know he was staring at it for the longest while.
There was something there. Something in the dark of his heart that pointed to it. Something tied to his fate perhaps? It had him enthralled.
He had been residing in Marluxia's garden for some while now. Rook was largely unsure of his position with the other members he would hear walking about, and he wasn't into exploring the option fo testing it. Many of the Nobodies that lived in the Castle were more than a match for him, and even those he was a match for, he didn't look forward to fighting again.
"Why don't you just storm them?" He could feel he wasn't alone now. Marluxia? Perhaps. Most likely. He was about to speak more, but it dawned on him that he was speaking of going to war with a neighboring clan, and while he thrived on fighting to survive, he could only curse the Assassin's name for corrupting him into wondering such things. This wasn't the first time Rook had caught himself thinking harsh, dark thoughts...
D' you breath the name of your saviour in your hour of need, n' taste the blame if the flavor should remind you of greed, Of implication, insinuation and ill will, till' you cannot lie still, In all this turmoil, before red cape and foil come closing in for a kill -Poets of the Fall, "Carnival of Rust".
Marluxia had been spending time training Rook. Corrupting......drawing him closer to the Darkness. He was leaning up against the wall of his garden, watching Rook stare out the window. Rook had been somewhat distance lately. After his little bout with Lexaeus in the Hades Cup, Marluxia would have expected the red head to try even harder to train and become stronger. But something else was plauging his mind. A person perhaps?
"Why don't you just storm them?" . So, it seemed the child wanted to know about the war. Good thing too, he would be needed once the TRUE war began. Marluxia stepped forward and joined Rooks side at the window. He crossed his arms and gazed out the window to look upon the Castle of Abyss. The castle that held the Organizations enemies. "So. You wish to know of the war? Fine. If you wonder why not storm the Heartless, it is actually really simple. We can't. If we were to blindly go over and attack without knowing what they had in store we woud be picked off one by one." XI thought that Rook of all people would understand this. Tch. Maybe a vist from Lexaeus would prove to be insighful for the young seed of darkness.
"Then you cede territory, strike systematically, in waves from varied directions one at a time. You could bring down that entire castle before they knerw what hit them..." He spoke of taking them out, but in reality, curiousoty killed cats. And the look on his face would have been a death notice. There was something there. A faint glimmer of light somewhere high in the castle, a familiar presence that resounded off the alleys and buildings below them and echoed as it found him.
"...But why fight at all? Why not just become whole again..?"
Marluxia let out a chuckle. If Rook would have spent as much time training as he did thinking. Then Marluxia would have already sent him on his first mission with Lexaeus.
"Because Rook. We need them as much as they need us. And until that balance is filled we can't get rid of them. Plus. It seems that Elaeus of those bunch of Heartless is gathering a troop of fighters. Thats were you come in. There seems to be a light weilder that they've captured. When the time is right, we'll take that power for ourselves.. So just stay put little one."
Marluxia could feel that Lexaus would be arriving soon. Rook and V were in need of some alone time to sort out their "problems" and if need be. Become closer allies.
Rook raised a concerned eyebrow, "A light wielder..?" He looked down at his own hands and shook his head, "Is that all you have on the matter? No name, no comprehension of powers? Because if the Heartless are recruiting humans too, you probably should know a lot more than that..."
Rook wasn't a friend of Marluxia's. He could barely stand him. If not for the darkness already in his Heart that burned for more power (a yearning Rook was hardly able to keep under his thumb as it was), he would have been gone some time ago, at the very least fought for his freedom to come and go as he deemed fit. As such, he had no qualms about overstepping his bounds.
"...otherwise, you probably won't last long as an effective leader."
Marluxia laughed at Rook's ignorance. Of course XI knew more about this person they abducted. He also knew that Rook was there. Funny thing how the Assassin knew this. Simple, XI put some of his energy into the keybearer. By locating this energy Marluxia can tell were his puppet is. Quite useful.
"Is that all you have on the matter? No name, no comprehension of powers? Because if the Heartless are recruiting humans too, you probably should know a lot more than that..."
"Oh Rook. Have ye so little faith in me now. Natrually I know more. Not much, but some. All I feel like telling you is that she is a human who also has a Heartless inside of her." Marluxia knew good and well that Rook fought along side her. He didn't know if he would go to her aid.
"...otherwise, you probably won't last long as an effective leader."
So. Rook HAS been catching on to XI's true plans. But now is not the time to discuss them. The Assassin never knew if Xemnas would be listening. "Whatever could you mean Rook? I am simply third in command nothing more."
(The third in command is in 358/2 days. The order of people in charge is determined by how high their chair placement is in the meeting room)
"Nobodies want the power to become whole... it's nature. The only thing you feel. And there hasn't been many, if any reports of your activities in almost a year, until recently... So if you're still here, you're either leaderless or not being led properly... and since no one else in thie castle seems to have taken a shining to a human being...I'm making a leap and saying you're the one with initiative..."
He broke contact with the castle and looked at him, giving him a nod and a smirk, "But hey... power means people take notice. And all I want is to be remembered."
He returned to his gaze at the Castle of Abyss, staring for a long moment before the wheels clicked. Slow on the uptake? Much so.
"Wait... a girl with a Heartless inside... captured by another Heartless? Does one of the Dark XII have a long white and black coat and long hair?" his eyes widened. It was possible... unlikely, but possible... was that light that shown from Abyss and into Rook's heart Era?

Rook was learning more and more. It's actually a good thing. The more Rook knew about the Heartless the better. XI walked over to the fountain in the middle of his garden while Rook looked out the window back at the Abyss Castle. Marluxia began to wonder if Rook would catch on to what he said when a couple minutes past. XI was about to speak up again when the lightbulb finally went off in Rooks head.
"Wait... a girl with a Heartless inside... captured by another Heartless? Does one of the Dark XII have a long white and black coat and long hair?"
Finally. "Why yes one does Rook. That would be Ansem. Their leader. Why? Was this girl some kind of acquantince of yours?"
A dull whisper, only audible if one was listening intently. He spun around and grabbed his vest from one of the tables of plants and stepped up towards Marluxia, "I think so, I have to get to her. Now."
There was no fear or hesitation in his voice. He let Era slip into Ansem's hands on Traverse Town, because he was not strong enough to keep her safe and out of danger's hands. But he was stronger now. He could feel that much. he had to try.
