Name: Malum Nihil
Nickname: Mal
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Species: Abnormal (Human)
Position: Neutral
Powers: It's Nothing: Malum's power as an abnormal manifests itself as a large screw with the head being six inches in diameter, the body being about four inches in diameter. Overall it is eight inches long. Malum is able to create more than one screw at a time and they will only disappear if he wishes it or if he leaves the vicinity.
It's Nothing allows Malum to return things to how they were one to ten posts ago at a specific area, such as on a person to fix wounds, or return ones that had been healed. This can also be done to remove things such as silence, darkness, poison, etc. from people and can be used on an object to repair damage done to it. A drawback to restoring wounds with this ability is the pain felt when they recieved the wound is brought back just as strong. Malum can only use this ability once every five posts. The effects brought upon by 'It's Nothing' are permanent.
Weapon: None other than 'It's Nothing'
Picture: Appearance: Malum's hair is a very dark purplish blue color, completely black in little light, is cut to a medium length, and is rather messy. Malum's face is rather normal and is almost always adorned with a smile. His eyes are a very light violet color and little emotion can be read from them.
His body has no marks or scars on it as he would always use It's Nothing to get rid of them. He weighs approximately 110 lbs. and stands at 5' 6". His hands are just big enough to hold on to It's Nothing by it's head, but anything larger and he wouldn't be able to grip it.
Malum still wears his old school uniform as he has yet to get new clothes due to having little spending munny. It consists of a long sleeved black button up collared shirt with 5 medium sized gold buttons. The collar of shirt has an outline of white at the end. Underneath this he wears a simple white T-shirt. For pants he wears a pair of un-marked black slacks that hide his socks. For shoes he wears a pair of black dress shoes with short gray dress socks.
Personality: Malum is one of those described as a 'born loser'. No matter what or how hard he tried, he could never beat others at anything. He had bad grades, a horrible reputation, and bad luck. Even when it seemed he had won, he always considered it a loss. Because of this Malum had a hard time making friends as others considered him a loser and has yet to understand what a true friend is.
As Malum never had anything to care for, or to have others care for him, so he is inexperienced in talking with others. Because of this inexperience, he doesn’t know what friendship is really like and rather naïve about receiving kindness. But even if shown kindness he wouldn’t know what to think of it, and almost seem to reject it, believing he wasn’t worth it.
Malum has always been very negative through out his life, primarily on topics involving him. He thinks of himself as useless and believes he can find meaning in helping others. Due to this, Malum is quick to throw himself into danger for others sake, simply so he can feel some sense of usefulness. Because of this Malum has built up quite a tolerance for pain, and will continue to endure as long as he can hold out.
Despite all this Malum would always smile and whatever others do to him he would live with it and act happy. He was and still is something of a doormat for others to step on but he doesn't mind as he feels it’s better to bare the burden himself then have someone else do so. He would carry the entire universe’s malice on his own if he could, just so others wouldn’t have to carry it themselves.
Original World: Un-Named World
Current World: Traverse Town
History: Malum's world was like most others, peaceful with strife here and their but nothing world breaking. Technology had advanced to a modern stage and while not all were happy, many people had managed to find happiness on this world. Over time though, people soon started to be born with odd abilities and talents that set them apart from normal humans.
These people were divided into groups known as specials, those whose abilities were great and somewhat similar to the other group; the Abnormals, people whose abilities defied limits and enabled them to do great, benevolent, or terrible things. Facilities were soon developed in the disguise of schools to study them and see how they could benefit the world. They taught them control, stability, and tried to make them feel normal despite the fact that they obviously were not.
Malum was born in this world to a normal family but at the age of three started showing abnormal traits. He was soon brought to one of these facilities and was soon declared to be an abnormal. He was taken away from his parents and even though he saw them every now and then they slowly stopped coming and over time; and eventually stopped coming all together.
In his fourth year at one of the schools a pair of scissors had fallen off of a table and stabbed Malum’s arm. While the other children were panicking Malum simply removed the scissors and made the wound regress. Through this Malum became rather well known and while some were amazed and impressed with such a power, others found it odd, even for that of an abnormal. Malum of course rejected this amazement, finding it nothing special.
When it was time to start middle school he was transferred to a larger facility and Malum was happy as he felt he’d have a chance to make a friend. He tried being kind to others, and try and be useful to them and no matter what others did he continued this. Because of this he was often taken advantage of by others but he didn't mind as he found a glimmer of happiness in this.
At the age of 15 Malum soon stopped talking to others. He stopped finding happiness in helping others and soon became absorbed in his thoughts. He questioned what role there was to play for someone like him, what was the point in him living? Without others he was useless and though he was happy when helping others, he felt that the happiness was shallow and fake. He couldn’t find real happiness in just helping others and began to hate himself for his selfishness in relying on others. As Malum started mentally torturing himself with thoughts like these, he would soon become very distant from everyone he knew.
When Malum was 17, he was well known through out the school as the doormat of abnormals and specials alike. Though he still helped those who asked, he stopped asking others on his own. Unfortunately despite all this, in the end Malum found himself alone in the world with no one to rely on and no one to care for. It left a feeling of emptiness in him that would only get bigger.
On the outskirts of the world at the time people began to disappear. Slowly at first but soon something dark began to eclipse this once peaceful world. No matter what they tried they couldn't stop it and Abnormals were sent in to try and deal with the problem. This attempt bore no fruit and eventually the darkness arrived at the facility were Malum was kept. When he saw it, there was no time to scream, no time to fight, no time to do anything. He was soon enveloped by it and sent sprawling through the darkness, only to arrive at Traverse Town.
Malum had woken up in the water ways, unsure of where he was and not understanding anything. He soon found his way to people and they explained where he was. At first Malum didn't believe them, he didn't want to. The feeling of emptiness expanded within him and not knowing what to do, he realized he'd have to take care of himself. What little munny he made was from protecting himself from the heartless or helping those in need who had munny to spare.
Malum is currently living in a cheap apartment with one bedroom, one kitchen, and one bathroom. He pays the rent with what little munny he can pull together but it allows him no luxuries in life. He is trying to help others who need it but those that want his help are few and far between. He is unsure of what to do with his life but continues living all the same. He knows nothing of light or darkness, all's he knows is that the heartless are to blame for the loss of his world and in turn, the emptiness he feels inside himself.
Role Playing Sample: Malum was walking behind a woman who he had overheard saying her son was sick. He offered to take a look at the boy and help him if he could. The woman had of course felt uneasy, as all the others in the town did when Malum was near. The mother spoke to him as they entered her house. "I'll show you to his room." He followed her silently and could easily tell she was nervous about letting him into her house.
Once at the boy's room she opened the door and stepped inside with Malum walking over to the boy's bed and kneeling down to look at him. The child was asleep and shivered every several seconds. "Please, help him if you can," the mother said. Malum nodded and placed his hand on the boys arm. He closed his eyes and reopened them after several seconds. The shivers seemed to die down as Malum took his hand off. "...He'll be fine now." Malum spoke softly, standing up and facing the woman.
She stared at him in disbelief. "Is, is this some sort of joke to you?! I didn't see you do a thing and you expect me to believe he's fine?" The woman was angry and spoke harshly torwards Malum. Another person who couldn't understand...
Malum left the woman's house after several more sharp words were thrown his way. He simply kept quiet though; happy that he had helped, even if the boy's mother didn't know it. He walked lazily to his apartment in second district, not talking to anybody on his way in. Once in his room he laid down on his bed and looked at the ceiling. Rent was due tomorrow and once again, he would barely have enough.
Continuing to stare at the ceiling Malum let his thoughts drift and not focus on any particular subject. He was content with the cheap apartment he rented, even if he couldn't afford luxuries in life. Back on his world he didn't have to worry about food or having a place to live as that was all provided by the 'school'. Even though they tried to make him feel normal, he knew he wasn't and accepted it. He wasn't any where closer to figuring out why he felt so empty within but decided to simply live with it, figuring he'd find the answer someday. With those last thoughts he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
(The Next Day)
Malum awoke with a loud yawn and stretch as he looked at the clock on the floor. “8:37…” Malum spoke to himself quietly. He felt he should go back to bed but it was already too late to try. He made a mental list of things he had to do while he stripped to take his morning shower. He needed to pay his rent, look for a job, and see if anybody needed help today. He remembered the events of the night before and his expression changed to that of a smile. “I hope that boy’s fine now.” Malum spoke to himself again, used to having only himself as company.
As he left the apartment he stopped by the first floor’s office to deliver his rent. It was cheap, only 1,000 munny a month but due to that the rooms were cold and rather shabby. Afterwards he left to go and see if he could find any work. He doubted he’d find something but it was better to try and find nothing than to not even give the effort in the first place. He wandered around the first and second districts seeing if there were any openings in the stores but all had said the same thing. “I’m sorry, we don’t have a position you can fill at the moment.” He wanted to believe they were being honest but couldn’t help but feel that they just didn’t want to hire someone like him.
He sat on a bench in the first district, quietly contemplating what to do then. He didn’t see anyone that seemed to be in need of help while he was searching for a way to make munny. He decided to tilt his head back and simply think for the time being. “Soon,” Malum spoke quietly to himself once more. “Soon, something good will happen; my luck can’t be that bad can it?” Malum was left with only the sounds of others talking and the wind as his answer. So he continued to think, drifting off with his mind in the clouds.
