In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

It had been a while, hadn't it? About six months, if he remembered correctly. Still, he'd had good reason. None of them could really argue with that. He'd come back empty handed, sure, but he had to try. It was Sabin; if it had been Celes, Locke would have done the same, and Strago for Relm. It was just one of those things.
Regardless, though, it was good to be back, and it would be good to see the others again. Besides, Edgar had done a little thinking on his trip, and he had an idea. There had to be a way to do this more organized, instead of chasing random wild chocobos. But that would wait until he could run it by the others.
For now? Edgar walked through the door to the place where he had last left the other Returners, looking more or less like his usual smug self. The conversation with the mechanic girl down the street had left him in a good mood, as did the idea of seeing his friends again. Hopefully they were home.

The table was covered in paper. There were star charts and street maps and copies of bulletins, terrain maps and blueprints, and all of them covered in cryptic markings. Locke sat over them, absently flipping a coin over his knuckles with one hand while with the other he measured and compared, manipulating a drafting compass and square, and noting down more cryptic things on a pad at his elbow.
He didn't look up when the door opened. The only people who would be walking in were supposed to be here, and if it wasn't one of them, he could hit them from where he was.
Only -- wait. Strago was off looking for Relm - again - and Edger had been gone for months.....
Somehow, Edgar wasn't particularly surprised at Locke's response - or lack thereof. He got a little preoccupied when he was rumor tracking - and Edgar recognized exactly what Locke was doing on sight. It's the only thing he did that required quite so many different kinds of charts.
How best to do this, then? Locke wouldn't react until given something to react to... heh. A few mental calculations, and Edgar moved into position. Locke tended to get jumpy when he was focused on something. All it'd take is a little noise - like, say, a certain two-headed coin being tossed towards the treasure hunter's working space.
Locke flipped his coin up into air and scooped both coins out of the air. In the same movement, he shot them both back at whoever it was -- and then he looked up.
"Edgar!" He relaxed, glad to have an excuse to break off his work, and more glad to see his friend finally back.
Being prepared, Edgar managed to catch both coins without much difficulty, and grinned. "Hello, Locke. Busy as usual, I see. What's the word today?" Details of what happened to him in the last six months weren't needed just yet; it could at least wait to see if Strago would be around any time soon. Though, Edgar knew that the odds that Locke would let him off just like that were basically zero.
Locke made a face. "Nothing solid yet. Unless it's monster hunts, those are easy. Everything else..." he shrugged. "Still sorting out the exaggeration. How was the trip?" He wouldn't get his hopes up, not yet.
"Another wild chocobo hunt, and a long one at that. Long story short, no results. I'll give you the long version when Strago is around. Where is he, anyways?" The king did have some interesting stories to tell, but it was long enough that he didn't want to have to repeat himself, and he knew Strago would be just as interested as Locke in his story.
"Relm is being Relm," Locke shrugged, "and Strago's being protective. And he thought he might have lead on Gau, but it didn't pan out. I'm not sure when he plans to be back. He keeps in contact, though."
Edgar nodded his response. It wasn't particularly surprising to hear, to be honest. They had all been doing everything they could to find anyone else from their world, and from what he could tell, they weren't the only ones. Many people had been displaced from their worlds, and separated from their friends and family in the process. This realization had occurred to Edgar on his travels, and it had given him an idea, one which he now intended to share with Locke, and eventually the others as well.
"I had an idea, while I was traveling." Now was as good of a time as any to tell Locke. The sooner the better, in fact.
((No worries. Also, screw it, dropping the color font. Still Edgar speaking, of course.))
"We've been looking for the others for a while now, without much luck. The thing is, we aren't the only ones looking for lost friends and family. Quite a few worlds have been destroyed from what I've heard. So why not help them? We can charge enough of a fee to cover costs, and it will give us an excuse to travel the worlds tracking down information. While we're out anyways, we'll keep our eyes and ears open for news of anyone from our world. It will earn us just enough munny to keep us running. We'll be the Returners again, returning people to their friends and family."
He hadn't worked out all of the details yet, but there was enough here to work with.
Locke turned the idea over in his mind, looking at it from all the angles. It was incomplete, but, he thought, sound.
He pushed back from the table and stood, leaving his papers there, and crossed the room. He thought better with something in his hands. Noe, he tossed an apple in one hand for a moment, thoughtfully, before he took a bite.
He liked the plan.
"We'll need a network. Contacts. Otherwise we'll be walking blind."
((Trying something different with the coloring. Let me know if this is easier to read.))
"That's why I'm going to Radiant Garden next. That seems to be the other main hub around here. We'll need to go to the other worlds as well, but Traverse and Garden are the places to start." Edgar already knew this part, and had some, though not all of the answers worked out. That's why he was bringing it up to Locke. It seemed the treasure hunter was behind the idea, too; he only started poking holes in a theory if he liked it.
((Eh, slightly. This background is so picky, everything's either blinding or blends in.))
That was a good start. It took time, but contacts always did.
"The mark boards, too - see if we can make use of all those kids running around. Most of 'em have hero complexes anyway, they'll be glad to help for nothing. Do we charge if we can't find them?"
The mark boards are something Edgar hadn't thought of, but it was a good idea. It was about spreading out as much as they could - the further their reach, the more likely they would be to find people.
"No. This won't be easy, and it hardly seems fair to charge without results." The point of this, in Edgar's mind at least, was not to make money. It was more about helping people, and about getting the word out there - because if any of their friends heard about The Returners, they would be sure to come by.
