In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.

A shaky breath escaped from pale lips, a puff of mist rising as the air rose. It had been a while since she last saw snow. Now, back in the one world she hated most, Traverse Town, the young girl felt at last peaceful. The cold numbed her body, her emotional pain. It was nice, finally being able to train her thoughts on something else. But, as always, those creeping thoughts had always managed to slip back into the front of her mind. Even all the ice could not soothe her mind completely. She had nothing left but to slip back into her hatred of emotion, or, if not that, death. And here, curled up and shivering in the blanket of snow on an abandoned street, was the perfect place to give up.
She found herself wandering, seeking some kind of reason... that's all she had ever needed. A reason to believe in people. Her emotions were at war with one another, and she found herself slipping in and out of periods of sleep, trying to figure out how she felt. The thought that history would repeat itself made the lone wolf want to abandon hope, again, but then again... there were so many people she knew now that had convinced her that she was wrong to judge everyone on the same standard time and time again. Then there was the thought that her trust would be broken and she was doomed to relapse, again. Of course, there was always the possibility that such a thing wouldn't happen and that she would end up happy.
And of course, that was just the tip of the iceberg. There was also the looming problem of who the girl loved, of who she would choose. Hero... the blue-haired boy with the headphones, the one who first opened her up to the idea that perhaps, people weren't all that bad... the first person she'd ever kissed... or Saxen, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy who helped her get over her worst fear... who helped end her recurrent nightmare and kissed her in such a surreal, but beautiful way. She felt so selfish that she had to love both of them for what they did, but she couldn't even gather up enough courage to tell one of them that she liked the other more. Frankly, the girl didn't even have half an idea if she liked one over the other.
Her confusion had sent her wandering for days, barely eating, caught between light and dark. It was getting harder to feel anything but a deep despair, and for a while, it was as if the girl was sleeping through life, caught in a strange, dream-like state. Only recently had she come to enough sense to start thinking, again. It hadn't even been too long since that dream with Saxen... perhaps a few days? A week? A month? Within whatever period of time, the girl had ended up on this old, battered street, curled up against a lamp post in knee-deep snow.
I'm messed up. Flawed. My world's gone, and the moment I find something to live for, I screw everything up for myself. It hurts... to think about everyone and everything I left behind, about all those people who so eagerly betrayed me to make themselves look better... I should just give up now...
Helena shivered, pulling her knees in towards her. Phoenix Feathers lay, unpolished and going blunt, at her side. She was paler than usual and certainly not dressed for wintry weather. In a last ditch attempt, she brought up her hands and snapped, creating a small flame over her palms. Within those boundaries, the girl was able to shape the fire into a small bird, whose fiery eyes peered up at her at Helena's conscious thought. It had been the first time she had ever thought about doing such a thing, but it appealed to her, for now.
"Maybe... I can find a use for you... as long as we can find a use for me, first." She smiled sadly.
Maybe I'll keep on living... for just a little longer.

Snow. She had always thought it was really pretty. She loved watching it dance down through the air, landing on the ground, and seeming to disappear. Luckily, her coat that she always wore anyway actually came to be of some use in the snow. She was wearing black gloves, now, too. Memories of snowball fights, snowmen, hot chocolate, tubing, and sledding came to mind as she walked through the town. She couldn't decide whether to let these happy memories cheer her up or feel bad for herself because they were gone. On one hand, she had plenty to cry about, but, on the other, she had spent enough time crying. In fact, so many issues had come about from the bad things that had happened to her, that her body had reacted to her emotional state. Something had to be done about that, so she had decided that she was going to be happy, today.
She ran through the deep snow, smiling and laughing. A couple people gave her funny looks, but she just smiled at them as she went by. She made her way through town, enjoying the snow until she saw a girl sitting at a lamp-post. This girl looked like she was about the same age as Gale and rather depressed, so Gale went over to her. This girl wasn't wearing a coat! Agalia took off her coat and handed it to the stranger, kneeling in front of her. "Will you play with me?" She asked, using her best little kid voice and puppy dog face. This girl. . . needed to learn some of the things that Agalia had already spent time to try to learn. . . maybe. . . they could help each other out.

...play?
Rust-like eyes peered up at a girl's face.
"...play...?"
The question seemed incredibly difficult to answer. It was simple enough; a yes or no answer was all it took, but the girl found herself unable to speak. Instead, she studied the stranger before her. Whoever this girl was, she was holding out a coat to the tsundere, her expression like that of young pup. Dark hair cascaded in light waves to the new girl's shoulders, covering up one of the innocent green orbs that gazed at the raven-haired girl, almost longingly. She didn't seem to mind the cold weather around her, instead offering up her only warmth to a pyromancer... a pyromancer who was honestly trying to die out in the snow...
I'm such an idiot.

Careful not to drop the small fire-bird in her hands, Helena rose to her feet, blinking at the girl before her curiously. The small bird also gazed up at the stranger, completely silent save for the sound of consuming flames. "I'm fine without the coat. I can always get warm whenever I want, really..." Helena smiled sadly at the girl. She must have been the same age as herself, but she looked so much more innocent than that on the surface. "You should probably put that back on... Don't let yourself freeze because of me, okay?" Bringing the bird close to her chest, the tsundere warmed herself as she watched the small creature commence in bird-like activities. It was strange, how she barely had to think about it... it just did what she thought a bird would do. Looking back up at the stranger, Helena continued, "See? This is my new friend... I kinda just created him on a whim a few minutes ago... I can use fire, you see, and I was trying to keep myself warm, but... he needs a name."
Like a bird you created out of fire has any kind of life at all... you made it! It does whatever you tell it to! And on top of that, you're gonna run out of juice and then you're going to have to wait to recreate it again, only to run out of juice once more.
Practice makes perfect. I'll find a way to get him to stick around, one of these days.
So now it has a gender?

Agalia listened to the girl and hesitantly put her coat back on. She was honestly freezing, but she wanted to do something for this person in front of her. The bird was really cool and Agalia happily watched it as its creator talked. She smiled brightly at the little bird of flames as it hopped around. It was so pretty, and cute, too! Without thinking, she looked up at Helena and blurted out, "It's cute! You, too!" She smiled innocently and with such a sincerity that it was almost guaranteed to make others want to join. Then, she realized that the girl had asked what she wanted to play
She jumped up and down, excited, and grabbed the girl's wrist, pulling her through the snow. "We play lotsa things! Miss...?" She stopped and spun around to face Helena and tilted her head at her. "You have pretty name?" She looked up at Helena and smiled. "I sure you do! What is it? I wanna know!" At that point, she was jumping up and down, beaming. She shook her hair out of her face and smiled up at her, waiting for her response.
Vayne walked casually down the street, his wintery attire newly purchased since Traverse Town had undergone a sudden and unexpected cool-down. It was now always winter, with snow occasionally falling in place of the gentle rains that had come before it. All in all, it wasn't too different from life before.
I used to feel this cold without the winter... Vayne thought. It had been one of his lower points, but that was also what had allowed him to grow up a little. Realize that there was more to the world than "Sing-eat-dance-sleep-repeat". More to life than frilly dresses and no cares. More to love than a crush and a dream.
It was a nice dream, though... Vayne thought wistfully. He still longed for that feeling that he'd seen in Xaoc and Lea, and a few other people he'd seen around town. Romantic love... Not that Vayne actually knew what that entitled...
As Vayne walked down a lonely road, he heard the sounds of laughter. His ears perked. It was female, relatively young sounding... Vayne smiled. Since Onee-chan had left for something she wouldn't tell him about, he'd been pretty lonely. That, and he'd been evicted from his home in the Zero District. The place now played home to the Police of someone named Jadis, and as Vayne could not be a policeman, he'd had to move into the Hotel. It wasn't that bad, and he'd made enough money before hand that he wasn't afraid of being kicked out too soon, but...
Vayne craved a taste of what he'd had before. Stability, or something like it. The feeling that he was with people who actually enjoyed his presence. On a whim, Vayne investigated the sound of laughter and came upon two girls. They both looked a bit older than him, but he wasn't put off by this fact. Banishing the chill that had been slowly working its way through his striped red-and-white stockings and his winter coat, he approached the two.
"Hello," he said, a tad timid and trembling from shivering, "My name is Vayne, and I... couldn't help but overhear your laughter. I was wondering... wondering if I might join in?"
It was a cold day... Traverse Town had never seen snow before this. That witch... She wasn't so bad, it seemed. The Victorian world seemed at peace now, the icy cobble streets lit into a cozy commons from the orange streetlamps. Citizens walked with frosted breath and large coats, and snowmen covered various street corners. This town had always been so lively, despite its small size, and now it was peaceful and serene, the blanket of white soothing its lively Heartless population. A figure stood in a courtyard, the snow hiding him in a haze, a silhouette amongst the white storm.
Syn stuck his tongue out to catch a snowflake. His tongue froze for only a moment before the warmth returned. At this point, his face was pink- his nose was so red it reminded him of one of those childhood nursery rhymes that he had heard so long ago. It had been so long since he'd enjoyed a chilly moment like this- so long since the cold didn't fight back at him. Before Ocean...
The memories of the silver-haired man stopped his heart for a moment. The ice flashed before his eyes as he remembered his own face staring back at him- for so long he wondered why Ocean was so similar to him. Never had he expected it was the Fever's true body. The Fever, the Heartless that lived inside of him, was only a small part of something much bigger, and he had successfully destroyed the being's true form. Now, all that was left was his own demise, for the Fever would never leave his body.
One day, it would eat his Heart.
The Firesoul pulled himself away from those thoughts and sent a pulse of heat through his body. Subsequently, the snow in a sphere around him burst into water and he laughed, shivering, as the liquid fell onto him. He peered around to see if anybody had seen his blunder and found only a small group of people nearby. He could hear their voices faintly.
Vayne, huh? Syn was sure he'd heard that name before. Maybe he'd met him. The other two were strangers, he knew for sure. He walked towards them, his hair already coated with thin strips of ice, and smiled at them. The girl was asking to play... It was actually cute. "It's been a long time since we've had this kind of weather," he exclaimed to the distant girl, the one being subjected by pleas to play. "Might as well have a little fun while the snow is here."
Let old memories lie; they are nothing now, Syn. That's what Serra would have said to him. How that thought echoed through his head. He wished he could see the ghost image one more time- He wondered if she'd made it to Eden by now. Even in death, her Heart had wandered to him to protect him from the Darkness. And he had done right, letting her rest. All was right with the world. Now, he only had one purpose: To live. Find his friends, and live.

The raven-haired girl bristled at the sight of two more headed in her direction. She had expected something small, simply a one-on-one game. Now there were boys approaching the black-haired girls. Helena shifted uncomfortably; not only was she cold physically, but she could feel the chill returning to her personality, as well. The tsundere analyzed the duo. One was young, with long black hair and... cat ears? The other, looking about the same age as the girls, had feathery hair and strange eyes, blue in color.
Blue...
Again, she thought of Sea-Salt Ice Cream, Hero's hair, and Saxen's eyes.
It was painful. She wanted to just fall back in the snow, again, just sit there and freeze. They'd be better off this way. Helena's eyes peered down at her shoes, worn from years of use and abuse. She hated the color, blue. It was a color she would prefer to let fade to gray. It would make things so much easier in the midst of heartbreak... Biting her lip, the tsundere let her hair fall completely in her face to hide the oncoming tears. She couldn't let these people see her break. They'd snap her in two, just like everyone back in Moonlit Lake did.
But then, the small firebird in her hands peered up at her. It was a beautiful specimen... warm, too. She had created something out of this despair... a friend, an ally. As the smlall creature made of flame opened its "beak," a crackle of flames escaped instead of a bird's song. Helena loved it. This creature, even though completely controlled by her actions, deserved a chance. She would live so the firebird could live and teach her how to be warm, as well. A small smile curled into her lips. Helena had just the name for this new companion of hers, one that would give it an identity semi-separate from her own.
"Artemis..."
The name escaped in a whisper, and a mist rose alongside the soft sound. His name would be Artemis.
Maybe... you're that part of me that's the real me, the me that wants to help people. Maybe, Artemis, you could show me how.
It was almost absurd, being that the girl controlled the bird's actions entirely, but it was pleasant to believe.
That's when she realized that the girl had asked her name. Helena smiled politely, touched with sadness, and replied softly, "My name's Helena. And this is my friend, Artemis." She allowed this smile to meet the faces of the two boys. Artemis fluffed his "feathers," gazing up almost curiously at the duo. "Sure, you can play, if you want."
One boy came over to them. . . then another. They were both kinda cute, too! And they were willing to join in the game! Then, the girl suddenly got all sad, again. Gale tilted her head at her, completely at a loss as to what could have brought this on so suddenly. "Miss?" She was worried. Very much so. Then, the girl looked up and gave her name. Helena. Gale smiled, again. "We all play!" She spun around to smile at the guys that had just shown up. Suddenly, her smile changed from a cute and innocent one to a playful one. She grabbed Helena's sleeve and ran off, leaving only two words for everyone to work with: "Snowball fight!"
Vayne giggled and dove behind the nearest cover, piling up snow as a makeshift wall. The shill of the icy dust settled so stagnantly onto the road reminded him he wasn't wearing gloves, but he wasn't about to let a little cold and some wetness on his hands stop him from playing the game.
Back on his world, the winter was long and harsh when it came, and everyone usually to refuge in the grand citadel during the winter. Every night was a feast and every day was a festival during the winter... Vayne missed the roaring fires and getting to dance and play with the other children. Shaking his head, Vayne refocused on the task at hand.
I can't be all stuck in the past when the new people need me to be fun in the present!
Balling up some more snow as his first projectile, he peeked over the top of his wall before ducking back down. Then he quickly popped back up and lobbed it in the general direction of whered everyone had been before.
Synthest saw the taller girl's lips quiver and stopped. He knew that face. It reminded him of- Serra. Don't be stupid, he thought to himself. Serra would never be sad. She was always so cheerful, never letting anything get her down, not to mention she would never do anything to negatively affect the morale of her unit.
He drew closer and saw her unfurl a fiery bird from her hands. He held his own out, clean of water or snow, and a flicker of light appeared in them. A flame uncurled from the darkness and Synthest the FireSoul offered the flames to the phoenix he saw before him. Maybe the myths he had heard as a child were true and the phoenix was a creature of flame, and warmth strengthened it.
He stared into the girl's eyes and grinned. "Hey, I'm Syn," he said, hopefully distracting her from her distant memories. "Relax and enjoy yourself; the snow is wonderful."
His smile was soon depleted as his vision exploded in frosty white. The snowball left him slightly confused as he attempted to find solidity once more.
(Finally found a point where I could jump in. Didn't want to interrupt the above rping session.)
Cold
It was really, really, REALLY cold. The weather reminded Haruka of the winters of her old world. The thought brought some tears to her eyes as painful memories fo the world's destruction came back to her, but she quickly shook the thoughts away. She was on a trip away from Radiant Garden, and she wanted to enjoy it as much as possible!
Straightening her earmuffs to fit more snuggly on her head, she began to walk into Travers Town's square, the thick layer of snow scrunchy gentley under her feet. She watched with a childlike awe as snowflakes drifted down from the sky. She vaguely remembered hearing that Traverse Town had not always been a snowy place. In fact, there never seemed to be any kind of weather at all, until the world had come under new management.
Turning her attention back to the town square, Haruka noticed several people standing around. Some were group together, with one of them, a girl, appeared to be holding a small, glowing object in her hand. Haruka's cruiosity piqued, she walked over aimiabley, albet shyly, towards the group.
Looking on from a distance, she watched as two of the group members began a rousing snowball fight, fligging snowballs to and fro in an attempt to hit each other. One of the snowballs was off aim however, and came flying towards her. Haruka let out a surprised yelp as she ducked out fo the way, landing in the soft snow. Blinking in surprise for a moment, a warm giggle burst from her lips. The event had reminded her of a happier time with her friends in her old world, and she smiled as she brushed the snow off of her coat and scarf. It was a good thing she had worn gloves, or her finger would have frozen with all the contact with snow she had recieved today.

Rust-like eyes peered up at the boy's blue eyes. They were painful to look at, but Artemis seemed to enjoy this boy's--Synthest's--company. Synthest extended his hand toward the small bird in her hands and fed him flames. Delighted, Artemis vocalized his enthusiasm with distinctly more bird-like sounds. Helena smiled slightly, hearing the boy's words reverberate in her head. Enjoy herself. Maybe that wouldn't be too hard to accomplish, after all. Before Helena could offer up her thanks to this boy she just met, the black-haired girl had hauled her off away from the two boys.
Bemused at first, Helena allowed the girl to simply drag her along until they stopped wherever they did. Artemis quivered in her free hand, reacting negatively to the cold air, and Helena brought the fiery bird close to her, protecting her new friend like she would protect her own child. When the girl finally came to a stop, the tsundere quickly built up a wall of snow to make up for her lack of help immediately before, with Artemis hovering close to her hands, keeping them warm. Still, however, she shivered; the girl figured that she would have to go inside soon.
As a snowball came her way, Helena quickly ducked, pulling the girl next to her down with her. It zoomed overhead, and it even seemed to have a nice spiral on it. The tsundere watched with wide eyes as the projectile went straight for a girl clad in blue. This second girl went tumbling into the snow to escape the snowball, only to giggle afterward at her misfortune. Helena watched confusedly, wondering how in the worlds this seemed funny, when she realized that she was STILL in a snowball fight. Moving Artemis over so he was hovering above her lap, Helena packed a few snowballs together and fired them without incredibly accurate name, hoping that she'd at least hit the shoes of one of her opponents.
Agalia giggled and smiled brightly as she ran off with Helena and managed to smile even more when another girl entered the game. Her smile was warm enough that it threatened to melt all the snow away before she even got to launch a snowball. She didn't mind being pulled down into the snow, at all. In fact, for a moment or two, she just lied there, happily making a snow angel. Then, when her companion began throwing snowballs, she was pulled out of her merry distraction and began making and throwing snowballs of her own. Her aim was, admittedly, rather poor, but she threw anyway, hoping that, by some miracle, she'd hit somebody.
[[It took way too long, and it's way too short...ugh...]]
Vayne gasped as an icy shock smacked into one of his kitten ears, causing him to fall down behind his snow wall and hold it gingerly. Were it not for the fact that wearing any kind of head gear caused him personal discomfort, he'd invest in a helmet. As it was, he had no helmet, and more importantly, no time to cry about it. Shaping up another frigid projectile, he actually tried to aim before throwing it.
I can aim for the girl who's out in the open... he thought. Or... I could go for behind the other fort...
On the one hand, it was kind of an underhanded thing to attack someone without cover. On the other hand, attacking the people in the other fort ran the risk of extinguishing that one girl's fiery friend. If he was responsible for that, he'd feel awful, so...
"Sorry," Vayne mumbled half-heartedly before lobbing the snowball at the unprotected girl.
As Haruka managged to stand up without her boots slipping in the snow again, she turned back to the game, only to have another snowball come flying at her. Her eyes opened wide with surprise, giving her a deer-in-the-headlights look as the projectile promptly hit her shoulder, with some hitting her face.
"Eeeeeee!" It was so cold!!! Haruka flinched and let out a high pitched squeel as the snow came in contact with her skin, and she quickly rushed to brush it off. She looked in the general direction of where the snowball had come from and spotted a boy with cat ears grinning sheepishly. This time the snowball had been aimed, and Haruka realised that she had been subtly invited to join in.
And of course, this is when her naturally shy nature kicked in. Haruka blushed crimson, and looked around frettfully, wondering what to do. She hadn't been in a proper snow ball fight since she was little, but how hard could it be? Banishing her nervous thoughts, Haruka quickly crouched down and began packing some snow together into a make-shift sphere. Now, the only thing she had to do was aim, and throw!
But I have terrible aim! Oh I knew I should have gotten some help from Merlin back home with aiming spells! I could at least throw a snowball properly! Not to mention my weak arm strength and-
But Haruka's thought were interrrupted as she was hit with another snowball. Flinching again, She grew more determined.
Hit me once, shame on you. Hit me twice, shame on me. Stop thinking, start throwing! Haruka thought determinedly.
Her face a mask of concentration, Haruka took her snowball, drew back her arm, and with as much aim and power she had in her, she hurled the snowball back at the other boy with a small cry, hoping against hope that she hadn't missed.
