In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

(Yeah if you don't know the first 2 eps are free on itunes for limited time a presume, so hop to it)
Gaaah I STILL don't know how I feel about this series. It's a sequal, but not a sequal. It's like one of those Narnia books that are so seperated from each other by time that it can stand on its own, while in a not have a strong connection to the past.
That's pretty much what it feels like now. All the characters you know and love are either dead...or old and wrinkly. Aang's dead (which doesn't spoil anything, since duuuuh we have a new avatar), and Katara...is pretty much a redesign of her grandma.
I do see this series picking up the heat later on down the line when that overall plot for the series kicks in. It's far too big, climatic, dramatic, and conflicting to not...make it great and have great moments, but DAGNABBIT I can't feel a think for Korra as a character.
I don't know if it's because a.) I have to swallow down the pill of watching different personalities now, since the old characters are gone.
b.) She feels like a melting pot of some of those characters, so I can't take her seriously. She's quite brash and very physical like Toph (sure we can add Zuko), and some of the things she does like her sense of humor and timing...feels like Sokka.
c.) and i feel that her personality is even more cookie-cutter to oppose Aang in everyway to the point it's flat, predictable, and been seens before.
I know it's wargy to go =3=;; already when it JUST started, since it's only the beginning. Regardless I would feel this way even when it airs, since I'll have to wait a week everytime to get more development out her. And yes, she's bound to go through some lovely good ole character growth...thus far I particularly...don't care for her original personality now. Yeah can I see myself in her to relate to her...(heck yeah I've already been called out for my tenacity this week), but unfortunately for me there's nothing personally interesting about her.
I find the scenarios she's going to be thrown into...and how she reacts to them =3= are more interesting, because...she's bound to evolve in being dynamic.
and that's Ellie "ripping up that Movie/show/and so much more"
I, for one, don't mind her personality, though I don't find it particularly savory. Keeping in mind the fact that she is older than any of the Aang Gaang characters were, and that she grew up in a time of relative peace, I find it acceptable that she has a more grounded sense of confidence, easy humor, and the sort of flippancy that comes from having a pretty safe, predictable life. She's impatient and lacks spiritual depth, but that's all part of her journey into realizing her potential.
The main things that strike me about this new series is the sheer detail and amazingness devoted to the plot and the environment. First, there is this wonderful, politically charged storyline of the non-benders fighting for representation and equality in a world ruled by benders. This isn't going to be a white and black, good vs. evil story. Second, there is this fascinating devotion into building this post industrial revolution type era, which combines both exciting new technology and the more traditional styles and themes of Asian countries. The music is captivating and, of course...the fact that Republic City is New York City all the way down to Central Park fascinates me to no end. I'm hooked!
Watching the first two episodes right now. I shall ramble my first impressions.
Opening, explaining the time of Aang has passed and whatnot. People I've noticed, so far, have been all 'D< Aang is dead!' about it, but honestly, I'm happy with it. It's true, he's not gonna live forever. It's another story now, and I'm eager to see how they do it without overlapping with the first show.
From here until mentioned otherwise, spoiler alert. //
First few wargs, before Legend of Korra managed to securely hook me: -Holy crap, baby Korra knows all the elements. I swear Aang went on an epic journey for all of his. -Holy crap, grandma Katara. -Naga, that dog/polar bear, has a massive front end and skinny rear. His poor, poor hips. - . . . *her, poor, poor hips. -What is wrong with the littlest airbender kid?
I must admit to how utterly strange it is to see the next generation and not knowing them at all, after following the story of their elders for years. The 'guess who's kid!' game is not one I expected to be playing.
Okay, by the end, I'm liking the fact that I don't like Korra.
To explain that; typically, I get nervous when I hit it off with a character right from the start. When I watch Korra, I notice she has the very obvious flaws, which are spelled out for us, and then the more subtle ones, which are the ones I dislike. That means we'll be getting the 'good ol' character growth', as Ellie said. Going with Korra along that path, for this whole series. . . I can definitely see myself doing, and enjoying. I probably will end up growing to love her. For the moment I don't - but, in some ways, I do. It's confusing. xD But a nice change.
And in watching Korra, unlike Ellie, I'm not plagued by the observation of her personality being a mash-up of the old characters. Obviously, I still subconsciously notice individual thing she does which reminds me of another character. It's inevitable she'll remind us of them in turns: the previous cast was quite diverse! (But every so often she gets an expression I swear was traced off of Sokka's face.) Still, she has her own flair to her.
I'm liking the thought gone into the plot. Or at least what I've seen of it so far. As Aryn mentioned, I immediately noticed the way they showed the passage of time in the advancement of technology. I loved seeing the extent to which they thought that out. The old culture, introduced to airships and cargo liners! Korra vs. a more modern society, in that first episode, was brilliant. Plot itself is introducing political and modern to the big good vs. evil mix, and I'm personally thrilled to see where it goes. We've even got our own sports game thought out here, up there with Quidditch and Blitzball.
Art, music, fluidity - all to the standards of the old series, and will probably surpass as it intensifies. Some of those scenes = breathtaking. Voice acting, as usual, leaves something to be desired, especially with the minor characters, but whatcha gonna do? XD
// End spoiler alert.
In all, I'm excited for this show. I loved the concept of Avatar just as much as the old characters and story. The two series are standalone, definitely. You can't connect them without putting a severe bittersweet feel to the experience of watching this new series. (Characters we loved are dead and gone; culture and society has altered; ways have changed.) But it's all an accurate and mature representation of time.
Since I loved the old one so much, I'm incredibly excited to go on another journey by the same creators, who I know will lead me along with as much skill as they did before. Legend of Korra isn't a cheap money ploy here, like Shyamalan's movie - it's too soon to be sure, but I think it will end up being an authentic and worthy sequel.
Every time I watch this show, I always get the feeling the creators are having just as much fun as us. xD

I KNOW. I'm like "come on it's only about 20 episodes in the entire series, while even split it up for 1/2 of it being a season. It just totally...sucks." I think "they" the creators said they might add more episode or extend it, but I'm honestly impressed in how great of a stand alone series it is...despite being a 'sequel' while not being a sequel.
Avatar: the last airbender had 3 seasons, each in the area of 20 episodes. There are two planned seasons for the legend of korra, with talks of a third season being made. But that was what i heard last. I haven't looked into it recently.

That was just connection purposes. Everyone we knew and love are either old or dead, and they haven't touched on any relative of Zuko at all in the series...so what better way to make us sequal at connection then having a re-occuring voice actor. TADAAAA people GO OMG OMG OMG OMG I KNOW WHO THAT IS...and connect the dots.
