In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

Days out of Yukki's hidden shelter were few and far between, with the research they had been doing on the virus plaging their body. Heartless, as the creatures of darkness were called, were prominent, and Yuuki had to be sure not to over-exert. But studying got boring, and no real tests had been done on the Heartless. After all, there was a job expected of being a hero.
It wasn't hard to find a small pack of Heartless, a small one of ant-like shadow beings. Dark eyes watched them as the looked about, searching for something, and calmly, Yukki put on the Gamer Driver. Tests had to start from the base point, further tests could call for level ups. For now, it was best to be simple.
"TADDLE QUEST"
The Heartless turned their heads at the sound of the Cartridge, the game screen projected behind them. It had been a while, and brought a smile to the youth's face. The feeling of exhilaration was coming back, and it was almost comforting to assume the role once again.
"Level 2, commencing."
"Level up! Quest Gamer, initiate!"
After the level was opened, the familiar construction field formed around them, knocking away a stray Shadow that dared to get too close. In a flash, Yuuki was armored up and ready to go, the sharp gaze of Quester looking forth at the Heartless. There was no need for weapon select, and with a flick of the hand, data once again began constructing, the Quester Sword appearing in another flash. Heartless were of low intelligence, but they knew a weapon when they saw it. The Shadows lunged.
They all fell easily.
But what Yuuki hadn't counted on was reinforcements, and a sudden strike from behind was a reminder of this. They stumbled forward, and pivoted, looking at the new adversaries. These Heartless were more humanoid, with large clawed hands, and short legs. The one that had hit them was standing closer to the front, and was ready to attack again. Luckily for Yuuki, they had a chance to react. A press of the B button of the sword was followed by a slash, as the Soldier threw itself towards them, and the Heartless burst into dark mist. The motion was carried into another step, sword going from left foot to right shoulder, and two more Shadows joined the Soldier in defeat. The remaining Soldiers, however, circled about him, the duo on either side.
"Might as well finish up here."
Taddle Quest was removed from the Gamer Driver, and the youth loaded it into the Quester Sword, Blue sparks began to dance up its blade as it took power from the Cartridge.
"Final Attack! Taddle Critical Finish!"
The attack fired off as the Heartless attacked, a wave of blue energy emerging from the sword as Yuuki swung it in a circle. It tore through the Heartless, the shadow raising to the sky.
"Perfect!"
Yuuki sighed in relief, the sword disappearing back into bits of data as they relaxed. A look at the armor to make sure all was well was followed by a few deep breaths. The test was successful. Quester was safe to use, at least for smaller Heartless. Further testing could be dangerous.
Little did they know somebody could have been watching. Whether it be ally or foe was unsure.
Notes: Yuuki goes for a beta test, let's see what happens
Marmadue pressed his back against the wall, breathing heavily and his heart beating so rapidly he was afraid it would soon burst out of his chest. Heartless. They had been there just ahead of him, behind the corner. Of course he had immediately fallen back and it had seemed like they hadn't noticed him yet – though then again, perhaps they had been attracted to him in the first place? The Heartless he had seen no longer were an issue, however. Some armored figure had ended up showing up and taking care of the creatures. Perhaps that meant the figure was on their side – though then again, perhaps not. Marmadue had never seen them before and didn't want to take the risk that he would be the one struck down next.
So he waited. Waited for the strange character to leave so he could continue without any issues.
Or so he had hoped, as he peeked over the corner and kept eye on the figure. He could hear… Sounds. Close to him, where he wasn't looking. He even felt it, that feeling of someone – or something – being close and staring at him. Soft footsteps as they landed on the cracked pavement, dropped from mid-air. Chills ran through the Yuke's back. Time seemed to stop – perhaps even his heart did. He didn't want to look over his shoulder, but he knew he had to.
A scream erupted from behind the corner, loud and clear, full of terror. It didn't take long for the Yuke to rush out, a small group of little black creatures with glowing yellow eyes right behind him, their strange tendril-like antennae wiggling about. It wasn't like Marmadue was trying to run to the strange person who had just vanquished some Heartless the moment before, but that was where he was headed. After all, it was the opposite side to where the Heartless that were chasing him were! That was the only right direction to run to! He never stopped screaming.
Shoulders tensed at the yelling, and Yuuki pivoted in place to turn towards their source, seeing the strange... Whatever it was scramble away from-
"Oh no..."
The Heartless stopped as Yuuki put himself between them and their prey. Those cold, yelow eyes focused on the fighter as new prey, and Yuuki gulped. There were more than before. Nerves wracked through him, but he clenched his fist in determination. They wouldn't let the Heartless hurt whoever they were chasing.
He went to reach in the data for his sword again, but froze as more appeared. Their darkness seemed to breed other darkness, and he saw as ones popped into existence, heads white, and claws waving as they looked him and the newcomer down. Under the helmet, he bit his lip. Still, he looked back to the Yuke.
"Stay back."
This test seemed like it would end up getting him more data than he originally expected. He felt his hand brush over DoReMiFa Beat, sitting in its holster, but instead, he felt his hand move to the molded dragon head of the other cartridge. Slowly, he drew it out, and with the press of the activation button, the game zone altered.
"Drago Knight Hunter Z!"
Behind him, the game screen formed, and through the static came a great roar, before a mechanical dragon burst forth. The Heartless paused, eyes training on it, as it landed behind Yuuki. With a deep sigh, he closed his Gamer Driver, and held up the cartridge.
"Proceeding with the level 5 test."
"Level 5, loading! Dragon Quest Gamer!"
The dragon let out one last roar before it broke apart into sections, and suddenly it was moving of its own accord, armoring the youth. It all linked into place, but the Yuke could see Yuuki forced to their knee briefly, holding a shoulder as a spark of electricity danced along it. Still, they stood, and with it, the level up was complete.
The Soldier Heartless made the mistake of initiating the battle. They rushed forward, spinning through the air with a twirling kick, but they met the blade of the dragon, bursting into darkness. The Shadows had no chance to respond, as laser blasts blew them from existence. One final Shadow managed to grab onto the face of his dragon armor, but fire burst forth, and it was no more.
It was brief, but successful. Yuuki went to turn to the Yuke to ask him if he was okay, but suddenly, sparks burst from all the armor, and with a cry, he scrambled for the cartridges on his belt. With a cry of pain, he pulled them out, and his armor faded back into data.
The youth looked up at Marmaude, panting, shaking a little bit.
Marmadue was quite content at running past the armored figure thanks to his shadowy pursuers, though he definitely was quite glad that he wasn't stopped! A short-lived joy perhaps, as his escape did come to a rather quick and unceremonious end when the Yuke tripped over his own legs and sprawled onto the pavement. He almost expected the Heartless to be on him in an instant, flinching and squeezing his eyes shut… But nothing. Jerking his head up, Marmadue glanced behind him to see the armored figure still standing there, blocking the path of the Heartless. There even was some different kind of a Heartless, one with horrific yellow eyes glowing from underneath a helmet…
Ah. The armored figure had said something when he had passed them, hadn't they…?
The Yuke started to scramble back up to his feet, so he would be in a better position to, well, do anything! Whether he had to defend himself or escape, he was going to have a hard time if he remained prone. His clothes and feathers had been covered in dust thanks to his fall, but adrenaline kept the pain away.
Escaping sounded like a good plan. Heartless were way above Marmadue's level and this stranger seemed like they had everything in control. The Yuke started to slowly slip away, but the person's yell did catch his attention. He didn't understand what the incantation was really supposed to do, but it seemed like the stranger had some kind of strange magic that just felt so captivating to watch! The air looked oddly static-y, but it was the roar of a beast that caused Marmadue to scramble to duck behind the nearby dumpster for safety, only daring to peek out occasionally.
The dragon monster seemed to be like… An ally? Or perhaps it really wasn't a dragon or a monster, as it broke apart and enveloped the stranger like an armor. It… Didn't look quite right however, the Yuke's heart skipping a beat as he watched the armored figure decimate the Heartless quite easily, their shadowy figures dissipating into nothingness. Marmadue was speechless, his helmeted head still poking out from behind the dumpster – and perhaps even having slightly pushed further out from the Yuke's hiding place, perhaps feeling just curious enough about what had happened to dare to risk it. Of course he pulled back slightly when the armored figure turned around and looked at him–
The stranger suddenly sparked, quick flashes illuminating parts of the alley before disappearing with a cry of pain. That definitely wasn't good! Marmadue peeked out once more, the armored figure having disappeared and replaced with what looked like a young boy. Or, perhaps, a girl? Ah, that wasn't even all that important! In their current state, they hardly looked like a threat. No, if anything, they looked to be weak and in pain.
The Yuke's adrenaline had drained out, leaving him with a slightly bruised and aching body as well as he shakily got up and stretched into his full height. His steps were careful, but whether that was because he was afraid he might have been attacked or if he was afraid that he might accidentally scare away who was basically his savior… Well, that was difficult to say. "Ah… Are you… Alright?"
That was a stupid question. They certainly didn't look alright!
