In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

Position: True Neutral, Chaotic Evil when he loses control of his darkness
Powers/Abilities/Techniques/Skills: Pyrokinetic Parasite – Donovan, like many others from the Kingdom of Strife, has control of a certain elemental “magic” through a parasite that resides in his body. No other world has ever been discovered to have this parasite in existence, and so it is thought to be nearly extinct, only being carried in survivors of Donovan’s world. The particular parasite carried in Donovan’s body allows him to control fire to a great degree. He can conjur fire purely from thought, and the fire he does so is a bright white color. has control of a certain elemental “magic” through a parasite that resides in his body. No other world has ever been discovered to have this parasite in existence, and so it is thought to be nearly extinct, only being carried in survivors of Donovan’s world. The particular parasite carried in Donovan’s body allows him to control fire to a great degree. He can conjur fire purely from thought, and the fire he does so is a blindingly bright white color. He can shoot it out in continuous jets from his hands, send out powerful fireballs to incinerate enemies, and various other things. One of his trademarks is controlling the flames around his sword’s blade, which is why he had it forged in the color of white. The flames add somewhat of an intimidation factor, as well as the added benefit of nearly melting the flesh anywhere he cuts an opponent.
Darkness – Donovan, due to the nature of how he was healed at the time of his “death”, Donovan’s heart is now nearly completely corrupted by darkness. The only thing that keeps him from becoming a Heartless is the small, incorruptible glimmer of Light still within his heart. The darkness, and the Light still in his heart, give him some additional powers, though they are gained at the cost of his sanity:
Immunity to Turning Heartless – due to the healing abilities of the Heartless that saved his life, Donovan is eternally on the cusp of becoming a Heartless. This is due to the extreme corruption of his heart, as well as the small glimmer of incorruptible light left in there as well. This makes him unable to become a true Heartless, though at times when he loses control of his darkness he goes into the early stages of becoming a Heartless. This also puts a great tax on his mind, which has severely damaged his psyche. At no time is Donovan ever completely sane, though at most times he’s not actually insane either.
Blades of Darkness – Donovan is able to conjur blades of darkness he can use in various ways. He can form them into darkness “weapons” to use if he ever becomes disarmed and cannot use either his sword or morningstar, or he can just form blades of darkness in the air and send a barrage of them at his enemies. Either way, this is a deadly ability. It does put a tax on his control over his darkness though, and after using this ability some, his sanity begins to slip, and he will temporarily lose his sanity if he continues to use it. If an opponent who is already corrupted by darkness is hit by this attack, it can cause them to temporarily lose control of it due to the strength of the darkness in this attack.
Dark Pillars – Donovan is able to call great pillars of dark energy from the grount in order to assault his opponents. They remain for only a split second, just long enough to strike an oponent, before disappearing. Donovan will sometimes combine this ability with fire to create an even more damaging attack. Just like his Blades of Darkness ability, Donovan’s sanity begins to slip after using this ability for some time, and will cause him to temporarily lose his sanity through continued use. Also like Blades of Darkness, it can bring out the darkness corruption in one’s heart.
Dark Healing – Donovan is able to heal his injuries through the use of darkness. He covers the injured area with darkness, and depending on the severity of the injury, may have to throw dark energy at it for some time. This ability also causes Donovan to slowly slip towards temporary insanity, though much more slowly than Dark Pillars or Blades of Darkness. His considerable use of this ability, though, more than makes up for the lesser corruption it causes.
Dark Wings – Rarely used while he still has his sanity intact, Donovan can create wings of darkness underneath his cloak, which he can use to fly. When used while he is still sane, it will cause his sanity to begin slipping immediately, which is why he rarely uses it except when he’s already lost control. On the reverse side, though, once he does lose his sanity, this is usually one of the first abilities he uses, and will typically sustain it until the glimmer of Light in his heart can finish fighting back the corruption.
Dark Portals – because of the corruption of darkness in his heart, Donovan is able to use dark portals. This, however, strains his sanity as much as his Dark Wings ability, and so he doesn’t use it unless he absolutely has to.
Weapon/Items: Donovan carries with him two weapons: a large morningstar which he carries in a loop on his hip, and a larger than average longsword, which he keep slung across his back. The metal of his morningstar is black as pitch. His longsword’s handle, which is rather plainly but sturdily made, is the same color. The blade, however, is in stark contrast with a brilliant white. The scabbard for his sword is also black.
Picture: N/A
Appearance: Donovan stands at a very tall 6’4”, and weighs in at approximately 250 lbs, all of it muscle. He has black hair, and green eyes that turn black whenever he loses control of his darkness. What he typically is seen in is his plate armor, which is painted black as night. There are gouges in the armor where weapons have hit before, and a small spot in the middle of the torso where it was obviously repaired from a grievous blow. On the chest of the armor is the emblem of Dryden, Donovan’s home nation, which is a golden dragon inside of a golden circle, clutching a golden sword and shield in its talons. The same insignia is on his shield, which is just as black and gouged as the armor itself. On his back he wears a tattered black cloak with his own insignia, a fanged demon’s head with horns, emblazoned in red. The helm for his armor is the shape of the demon’s head on his cloak, complete with horns and fanged mouth. He sees through the eyeholes of the demon’s face.
Personality:Donovan is, to put it bluntly, not completely sane. Under normal circumstances, he isn’t exactly insane, but because of all the strain that’s been put on his mind, his psyche is deeply scarred. The strain of living with so much corrupted darkness in his heart has put even further strain on his mind. Because of this, his main goal is finding a way to rid himself of all this dark corruption in his heart(though unbeknownst to him at this time, the only release from this is death). He is pursuing keyblade weilders with a relentless determination, as he’s heard that they can banish darkness witht heir special weapons of light. He wants no part in their fight against the Heartless and Nobodies, though, and nor does he want to side against them for fear that they will not help him restore his heart to how it should be. He remains neutral in the current conflict….except when he loses control of his darkness.
When he does, his sanity temporarily slips completely, and he goes into a berserker rage. His eyes turn a black color, including the whites of his eyes, and he attacks everyone and everything in sight, whether friend or foe. These episodes can last for hours on end, or minutes. It depends on how much darkness he used, how he used it, his emotions at the time, and various other factors. Usually he has to return to sanity on his own, though under rare circumstances he may be brought around by a friend.
Original World: Kingdom of Strife – A world torn by a millenium-long war. There were five nations, excluding Dryden, that all wanted to conquer Dryden due to it’s central location in the world. Even when the deity of the world, Tharos, began inadvertently drawing hoardes of Heartless to The Kingdom of Strife, these nations never ceased warring with each other. There were actually some humans fighting in the final battle against those who were trying to defend Fort Sentra and the keyhole from the heartless. Though mostly due to their warring tendencies, it was also partially because they did not know anything about the keyhole to their world’s heart. Current World: N/A, he moves between towns, and hasn’t really taken up residence in any.
History: Donovan was born to a lesser nobleman’s family in Dryden. His family, who had once been of great wealth and renown, had become destitute several generations ago due to gambling problems his great great grandfather had. Because of this, his family had been living in poverty until Donovan’s father grew to be the head of the family. Once Donovan’s father took over, however, the family’s fortunes turned around. He managed their finances well, and brought their family back on the path to reclaiming what they had lost. Though they were still far from their former standing in Drydenian society, at the least they weren’t living in poverty anymore.
Before all this happened, though, Donovan lived a large number of his childhood years in the poorer communities of Dryden. It was there that he met Maxwell Tendas, the boy who he would grow up with as best friends. They were completely inseparable, going everywhere and doing everything together. They even ended up going to the military academy together when it was discovered they had elemental magic. They were taken there to become soldiers, and leaders of soldiers. They were trained in all forms of warfare, taught military strategy, and taught how to fight with any kind of weapon imaginable in all forms of armor. They were also taught to use their elemental abilities, in both single combat and together as a unit.
Once they graduated the academy, they were immediately sent to the front lines to fight against the rebels, and the Jourgan, the armies of Dryden’s northern neighbor Jour. Max, who was only 17 at the time, was assigned to a unit of pikemen and sent west to fight the rebels. Donovan, who was 19, was assigned as a squire to a renowned knight, and was sent north to fight the Jourgan. He quickly bécame famous for his bravery in battle, showing almost reckless disregard for his own safety in order to complete his orders. The ferociousness with which he fought earned him the nickname “Demon” with both his allies and his enemies. Within a matter of 6 months, he had been knighted himself, and everyone quickly took to calling him the “Demonic Knight”. In honor of his new position, his father sent him some money to purchase a new suit of armor. Donovan had it custom-made, and tailoring to his nickname had the helm fashioned in the shape of a demon’s head.
It wasn’t too long after that the Jourgan were defeated, and a new enemy from the east revealed itself: the Heartless. Moving across the continent in huge hoardes, the Heartless barrelled over any resistance in their way. Donovan was at the first defense that Dryden attempted to mount against the Heartless, but barely managed to survive the slaughter that ensued. The Heartless were unlike any enemy seen before, and they were barely slowed down by their attempts to stop them. More soldiers were pulled from the armies fighting the rebels in order to face this new threat. That was how Donovan and Max found themselves fighting beside each other once again. It stayed that way, despite the Drydenian army being slowly pushed back, further and further until they were pushed as far as they could without withdrawing into Fort Sentra, their last bastion of defense before their capital was overrrun.
It was at this point that the constant strain of combat with the Heartless began to take it’s toll on Donovan’s mind. One day, while out on a scouting mission, he finally snapped and went berserk. With no other recourse, Max fought his childhood friend and, when given no choice, ran him through with his war pike. Max then left Donovan there to die, and turned his back on his childhood friend.
Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your view, Donovan was not to die that day. A Heartless of the kind Donovan had never seen before chanced upon the dying Drydenian, and apparently sensed the darkness that fighting them had put in his heart. Seizing upon this, the Heartless started to heal Donovan, but at a Price. It filled his heart with even more darkness than before, but while doing so it also left a small glimmer of light in his heart so he would never truly turn into a heartless. The magic the heartless worked made this glimmer of light strong, but restricted it from being able to grow more than necessary to keep his darkness from taking him over completely. By the time it was over, Donovan had passed out from the ordeal. Once its work was finished, the Heartless fled, and the next thing Donovan knew, he was waking up in a strange town he’d never been in before. With a little asking around, he discovered he was in a place called Traverse Town. Dazed and confused, he had stumbled into an area rife with Heartless, and out of instinct moved to defend himself. There were too many for him to handle alone though, and as he fought, he discovered his first ever darkness ability, his Blades of Darkness. He used it to fight back against the Heartless, but with dire consequences. The darkness in his heart grew and grew, straining his psyche until, eventually, he lost his sanity and went berserk, destroying all the Heartless and nearly half the district with them, and then vanished through a Dark Portal. When he came to, he was somewhere completely different, another world called Twilight Town. He decided he needed to learn to use these new powers he had, and he spent the next year working on it, discovering new ways to use the darkness in his heart, but at a cost.
Now he wanders from world to world as he can, searching for a way to banish this great darkness from his heart so that he can finally be whole again….
Role Playing Sample: Donovan, garbed in his heavy plate mail armor, stepped into the district. He couldn’t believe what was happening. Where were the fields and hills of Dryden? Where had he ended up, and how? He’d never Heard of a city like this in all the Kingdom of Strife. He turned, surveying the area as he walked, always keeping an eye open, never leaving his back unwatched for more than a second or two.
It was then that he saw them, the Heartless. Soldiers, they had called them back in Dryden. He grimaced at them. His instincts screamed many things at him at once: run, hide, fight. He froze, not knowing what to do initially. Then, the soldiers took notice of his presence, and he felt himself reach up and pull his sword from its sheath, hunkering down behind his shield in his heavy plate armor. The soldiers rushed him and, as they got closer, he let out a cry and bull-rushed them, barreling into them with his heavy shield. He knocked the first two aside, and then brought his sword down on top of the third, and then brought it around to slice through the fourth. He then returned his attention to the other two. They were easy enough to dispatch, and they disappeared in the usual puff of black smoke, with a red heart rising into the air.
Donovan turned and froze, staring in what bordered on panic. His fight with the soldiers had apparently attracted a bunch of other heartless as well, and now they were all staring down at him. He took a couple of steps back, and then looked in the direction he had come. There were Heartless there too. He couldn’t get out. He was going to die. After cheating death on Max’s lance, he was going to die here, in this strange place, an unknown.
The Heartless came for him and he steeled himself, bringing his shield up to meet them, and striking back at them with his sword. No matter how many he took down, though, more still showed up to take their place. He kept swinging his sword, but they kept coming after him, seemingly showing no fear. His mind began to race in panic mode as he hacked and slashed at the Heartless, trying to find a way, any way, out of this mess he’d found himself in. Then, as he started to send a blast of fire into the face of a nearby Darkball to beat it back, something happened. Instead of just flames, what appeared to be blades of black materialized wreathed in flames, and flew at the Darkball, which burst into the black mist that spelled death for a Heartless. It didn’t take long before he figured out how he had summoned the blade of black, and he started flinging them everywhere, covered in flames. He sent dozens into the Heartless.
As he destroyed the Heartless, he felt his panic and fear melt away. He could do this. He could survive. He could thrive in this situation. He enjoyed[/b] destroying these Heartless. Finally, he sent another volley of the black blades into the last group of Heartless keeping him away from the door. The black blades went wide and missed and he sent more, and more, and again more, but each time he couldn’t hit. He looked down and saw that he was shaking. He dropped his sword and put his hand to his head, holding it through his demon’s head helm. He heard himself start to breath faster and growl at the Heartless, and then he grabbed up his shield and sword again and launched himself into them like a hurricane. Flames flew all around him, as did the black blades. He sliced and slashed, all the while yelling and screaming at the Heartless. Then he started laughing each time he killed one, until he was laughing constantly like a maniac.
Finally, all the Heartless were gone and he was left standing there, in the middle of the third district in Traverse Town, the ground torn up where he’d slammed his sword into it while slashing at Heartless. The cobblestone pavement was going to need replacing. But, he didn’t even notice this. The only thing Donovan did was sheath his sword, and then walk forward as a dark portal opened up right in front of him…..
Questions/Comments/Suggestions? well…..You guys can see it….I just can’t stay away….lol
Well, man. You've got a very powerful character here. And he kind of confuses me. You've seemed to combine so many extremes into one dude that it’s difficult to get a sense of who he is.
I'm not going to go into the powers for now. I don’t see the threat of loosing his sanity as an acceptable drawback for all of it, since that’s virtually the only one you have. Why? Because it sounds like when he looses his sanity, he just gets stronger and more violent. You mention nothing of becoming dizzier, clumsier, slower, less intelligent with his blows, limited vision, poor aim.
Anyway. Skipping down to history. What lead to him snapping the first time? Was it seeing all the deaths, leading him in a downward spiral of pessimism? What on earth would cause him to go beserk? I can’t see the connection.
Huge history flaw: your Heartless are extremely out of character. Heartless don’t heal people. That’s, under most circumstances, a Light ability (though some possess the ability to regenerate their own limbs and recover wounds). They wouldn’t try to save someone who’s Heart had been corrupted, they’d simply try to devour it further. They certainly don’t strike deals, unless we’re talking sentients like the Dark XII, which are extremely rare and very powerful. And any magic they perform would most certainly not augment that little flicker of Light in his Heart. It doesn’t even make sense!
You say you’ve destroyed nearly half the district of a canonical location. I can’t allow this, as there is no such current destruction in Traverse Town.
I don’t understand how an individual can summon a Dark Portal and make it through the Corridors of Darkness with such a tasty little bit of Light left to squash out of him, unconcious, not be devoured, and end up eventually in a world in the Realm Between.
How does he travel from world to world?
Okay. Now back to personality, let's talk when he isn't insane. Which, you say, under normal circumstances he really isn't. So who is he then? A sullen, introverted person who prefers going solo? Darkly pessimistic and afraid his next attack and for people around him? Or does he live for himself and himself alone? Does he twitch and act oddly? Is he courageous and optimistic, acknowledging his weakness and attempting to fight it? Or does he become a perfectly normal guy?
Please give this charrie some more thought in the next week. If you have questions, you know who to ask. But welcome back. ;]
