Name: Harvey Clarence
ORIGINAL or CANON: CANON
Series of Origin: Farscape
What was the inspiration for them / do they embody a particular feeling or emotion?
Thinking really hard about it I would have to say he embodies desire. First off, he was created from Scorpius’ out of his desire for wormhole technology. Secondly, the way I’ve written this app he not only has a strong desire to see the stars but he also desires someone to see them with. I didn’t have an answer for this before because I didn’t really know how to interpret this question or even what it was asking.
Nickname: Einstein, The Patient One. Harvey once told John that he’d prefer to be called Albert rather than Harvey, before being shut down when John reminded him that invisible side kicks that live in his head were called Harvey. Upon being released from John’s psyche, he told John, “Call me Einstein. The Patient One.”
“The Patient One” references a quote used by the original Scorpius, “I long ago learned the advantages of patience”, which was well illustrated by both Scorpius and Harvey throughout the course of the series.
Age: Unknown, however due to the nature of his existence he is effectively nearly five years old, though he looks exactly like Scorpius.
Home World: No Answer
Gender: Male
Species: Scarran/Sebacean half-breed.
Being Type: Somebody
Position: Chaotic Neutral
The man from whom he was cloned of had strong ties with Peacekeepers (a sort of space police force ran by Sebaceans) and the Scarran Emperor of the (Scarran) Ruling Order. Harvey has absolutely no affiliation with either party, though he has used these ties to his advantage when need be.
Current Primary Objective: To find out what has happened to the present state of the universe that has resulted in him being stranded on Twilight Town, and do what he can to fix everything. His curious nature compels him.
Learning type: Harvey prefers to work alone and use self-study. He learns by using his hands; sense of touch. He utilizes logic and reasoning systems to produce the desired outcome or effect.
Passive: Heartborn Spark
Questions/Comments/Suggestions?
As far as the Jargon dropping goes, I apologize. I did take all of that into account, but as I wanted to avoid making everything longer than it was already going to be, I decided I would explain everything in this section. The night i posted the app, I was so tired I'd forgotten to say as much and label it WIP. So, here it is:
Translator Microbes: These micro-biological organisms allow alien races to understand each others' speech. They "colonize at the base of the brain" and allow one to understand alien speech. The microbes can be injected, and go to work almost instantly. Translator microbes are only required by the individual who needs to understand alien languages, not the speaker.
Scarrans: Scarrans are a bipedal species with a humanoid body structure, leathery reptilian skin, and claws. The Scarran physical appearance ranges from pale white to dark gray skin colors, and heights which exceed most species, hovering at least half a foot over most Sebaceans and humans
. They are pretty much intent on the destruction of all lower life forms. The range of their physical appearances can be seen in the images below.
Scarran Dreadnought: Dreadnoughts are gigantic battleships that are the primary Scarran command ships. These ships are almost twice the size of Peacekeeper command carriers but with inferior firepower. Despite their immense size, Dreadnoughts could generally be overpowered by command carriers in one on one engagements.
Peacekeepers: Effectively space cops, primarily consisting of only Sebaceans (I feel as though I covered them well enough in the bio). Peacekeeper society is a harsh, unforgiving meritocracy. Success is rewarded quickly and richly, and failure is punished brutally. Individuals are expected to conform completely to the ideals of Peacekeeper life, including the belief that all other species are either inferior or flawed. Below is an image of Peacekeepers in a board room on a command carrier, and as you can see they have multiple images of their emblem on the wall or flags around the room.
Command Carriers: Command carriers serve as a mobile base of operations for the Peacekeepers; they are immense ships with a crew complement of approximately fifty thousand. Many Peacekeepers live their entire lives on a command carrier, and as such they have all the comforts needed to sustain their large crews, including large indoor gardens that simulate a planet's surface and are used for combat training exercises.
The Ancients: The Ancients originally existed in another realm, one that is vastly different from our own. This plane of existence was bridged to ours by wormholes. When they became aware of the various species in our realm, and many of those species' aggressive tendencies, they modified several members of their own species allowing them to live and exist in our universe. These individuals became the Ancients and they were tasked to catalogue, report, and influence the activities of the species in our universe. Among their genetic modifications, they are able to shape-shift.
Pilots: Pilots and Leviathans seem to have co-existed symbiotically from the beginning – for some reason Pilots do not seem to be able (or willing) to travel from their home planet without being bonded to a Leviathan. The Pilots' mother tongue is an ancient one, the same as presumably spoken by their ancestors. This language is too complex for translator microbes to interpret, as it can convey huge amounts of meaning, inflection and emotion in a single sentence. The average Pilot lives for one thousand cycles, although when they are bonded to a Leviathan they share the Leviathan's life cycle which averages at three hundred cycles.
Leviathans: Leviathans share much of the same attributes as artificially constructed star ships, including internal atmospheres, command centers, living quarters, workshops, and hangar decks. However, no two Leviathans are completely the same. As they grow, their internal facilities develop to suit the needs of their crew.
Hynerians: The main characteristics of a Hynerian is their skin, which is an oily green hue. They have no thinning of the neck from the shoulders to the head, instead it seems their head is merely an extension of the body. The cranium is also quite small, however the species possesses large ears and eyeballs, and a large mouth. However, they have no nasal protrusion, so instead of having a nose they have two slits where the nostrils would be on the face. Hynerians also boast a life span of several hundred cycles, possibly even spanning up to a thousand. Hynerians have small feet, which could be seen as paws. Their hands, while composed of only a few digits, are capable of wielding tools and weapons with the best of them. Rygel, one of Moya's original crew, is a Hynerian.
Luxans: have protruding brow ridges that extend around to the sides of the head, shell- or plate-covered noses, long chins that come to a point (males only), and approximately eight tentacles (called "tenkas") that hang down from the back of the head. The tenkas have no muscular function but are sensitive to pleasure and pain. Males typically have beards that run from beside their noses to above the area where ears would be. Mustache-like portions of the beard hang down to the chest and are braided. The exposed skin of the chin and head is often tattooed. Chin tattoos often denote military rank. They have an excellent sense of smell, and also have prehensile tongues that can extend several feet either to grab objects or to deliver an adaptive venom which stuns but does not kill the victim. They have two hearts, can safely survive in the vacuum of space for a quarter of an arn (roughly an hour), and when injured a Luxan's blood runs reddish-black. In order to heal, the wounded area must be deliberately hit or squeezed immediately to increase the bleeding until the dark blood starts to run clear. If this is not done, the toxicity of the dark blood can kill the individual. This "black blood" response is much like an infected wound humans may experience. Draining the black blood is akin to draining the pus. Daargo is of this species.
Delvians: Delvians were a species of sentient humanoid plants hailing from the planet Delvia recognizable by their blue skin that was dotted with light green patterns. In accordance with their plant origins, Delvians rarely exhibited body hair – only a small few were seen to have any body hair at all. Solar radiation, like the light of the sun or a nebulae caused a very pleasurable effect on their bodies
. With prayer and deep meditation followers of the Delvian Seek gained a number of psychic abilities which were able to be unlocked by a disciplined mind, aided by the Goddess.
Okay, so, your skepticism of his force sensitivity is fair. I myself had to have some convincing as to why this was okay as well. Whereas the series does not expressly say that the Force is a concept, there are similar concepts. Aside from that, there's a (probably unintentional) easter egg in the beginning of season four.
First off, there are Zhaan’s capabilities. Her race, known as Delvians, typically sought to become high level priests known as Pa’us. Zhaan herself started the series as a ninth level Pa’u. There are multiple levels of Pa'us, numbered in ascending order from the first level on, but it is unknown what the highest level of Pa'u is, or even if there is one. It appears that a Pa'u is granted new abilities with every level of the Delvian Seek that they attain. One ability they all have is the ability to share “Unity” with other people, which is the same concept as a Vulcan mind meld. After Zhaan's character leaves the show she is replaced with Noranti, a witch with three eyes.
Another thing, there was one experience they had with a being named Maldis. This was before the microchip was implanted in Crichton’s brain. Maldis was a malevolent, powerful supernatural being who had reached a non-corporeal form and possessed considerable spiritual powers. Maldis gained strength from the life forces of others' pain and death and as a result used his abilities to encourage negative emotions such as fear, anger, hate, and pain in his victims before forcing them to kill themselves so he could feed. John had his mind removed from his body by Maldis and was put into a world which only he controlled. It took Zhaan’s powers coupled with a man named Liko’s to defeat Maldis and return John to his body. The encounter drained Liko to the point he died.
Yet another thing, there is John’s knack for being able to locate wormholes by sensing them. They never really explained how or why he could. It was summed up to be an ability given to him by the ancients.
He told the rest of the crew he could smell the wormholes. I don't know about you but this ability sounds suspiciously like force sensitivity to me, especially taking the next paragraph into consideration.
Here's for the easter egg. At the end of season three, Moya's baby Talyn had died and they had just towed the shell to a sector of space sacred to Leviathans being used as a graveyard. Aeryn and the surviving Crichton had been separated for some time while Aeryn was with the other Crichton on Talyn. Shortly after that one had died, they had been reunited and decided whether or not to make things work by the flip of a coin. The result of the coin toss was that she ended up leaving Moya. John escorted her out of Moya, her in her prowler and him in his module. Shortly after she left, and Crichton was returning to the docking bay, Moya herself gets sucked into a wormhole and disappears. John was stranded in the Leviathan graveyard. Season four started with Crichton aboard an aged, dying Leviathan, though it was still alive. Apparently the Leviathon, Elaak, and his pilot had promised themselves their rest here long before then and so when they began to die they parked themselves in the graveyard to await their slumber. Here's a clip of John on Elack:
Please forgive the quality, you have no idea how long it took to get this clip. Also forgive the sound as well, it was in Spanish and frankly very choppy and annoying to begin with, so I edited over it. Now, John wasn't wearing that outfit when he was left stranded in his module. I don't know about you, but that outfit looks very specifically like an old and deteriorating Jedi robe. Also, Elaak's pilot explained to him that they were bonded over 350 cycles ago. A standard cycle is nearly one and a half human years. Taking this into account, they would have been bonded about 525 years ago. Everybody's familiar with how the events of Star Wars take place a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. They happen to only be on the opposite side of our own Milky Way, however that aside Scorpius once explained to John it would take 60 cycles to reach Earth from this side at their highest possible speed. This being said, it's entirely possible Elack was once populated by Jedi and/or Sith. Aside from that, if you want to get really technical about it, the galaxy next to ours (on the other side of course, near where John and company are) can be considered far, far away considering we're already 26,092.5 light years from the center. This is all leaving out the endless possibilities presented by Unrealized Realities.
Now, I chose Harvey in particular because well... Whereas I identify with John more, or even Moya’s baby Talyn more than Harvey, Harvey remains my favorite character in the series. His wicked sense of humor coupled with his habit of constructing scenes reminiscent of movie scenes is what piques my interest so much in this character. I love the dramatic flare he provides any time he appears.
His character was probably adapted so it would resemble a Pooka, as the 6 foot rabbit from the movie Harvey was a Pooka himself. Pookas are defined as follows:
“"From old celtic mythology; A fairy spirit in animal form, always very large. The Pooka appears here and there, now and then, to this one and that one. A benign but mischievous creature. Very fond of rumpots, crack pots."
The idea of the Pooka is that it appears to people that need them. This was not necessarily the case with Harvey and John, however many of his mannerisms do indeed seem to stem from the description/definition above. A Pooka appears to people that need them, in the form of an animal.
“The Pooka appears here and there, now and then, to this one and that one.”
Any time Harvey appears to John, he often constructs a scene from John’s memories of Earth, perhaps to make him more comfortable with the situation.
“A benign but mischievous creature.”
Harvey, though John’s safety was always his primary concern, often illustrated such behavior any time he appeared to John. Unfortunately I find myself unable to think of any good examples.
I simply love Harvey as a character. That aside, I also felt like any time John was so quick to initiate his death they were doing him a severe injustice. There was a bit of information I kept from the history, as it seemed unimportant or rather, irrelevant seeing as how it technically has nothing to do with him. There was an episode somewhere mid-series John was “twinned” by a mad scientist. The idea of the twin was similar to cloning. However, each copy was defined as both equal, and both original. As Crichton was twinned, so was Harvey. One of the Harvey’s met their end after being removed by an ancient before he un-repressed the wormhole knowledge in John’s brain so he could use it to make use of a star and blow up a Scarran Dreadnought. This John died shortly after due to radiation poisoning. Shortly after all of this, there was the mob scene with the other pair.
Overall I suppose I felt like Harvey deserved more of a story. I feel like rather than try to kill him in order to remove him, they should have given him his own body. At least the John that survived anyway. The Harvey in the other John didn’t develop the friendship with his John that the one in the surviving Crichton had developed with his Harvey. So, I decided to pay homage to his character.
