In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

A Shadow leapt out at him from the side and, reacting swiftly, Max cut it down with Quicksilver, the black and silver blade glimmering in the soft light of Atlantis. He had barely taken two steps before he had to cut down a pair of Soldiers that tried to block his path.
They had held out against the Heartless for a while, but in the end they had broken through all their defenses through sheer force of numbers. Max had lost track of how long it had been. He'd been too busy helping Milo and Kida organize the Atlanteans against the Heartless. At first, he had thought they were going to manage to fight the Heartless off of their world completely with how well they had fought. However, once they started losing men, things had begun to go downhill quickly. In short order, they had started getting pushed further and further back into the city.
The worse part of it all had been keeping order. The further back the defenders were pushed by the Heartless, the more and more of them began to panic and give up, which only sped the process further along. They were eventually pushed to their last line of defense and managed to make it hold out the longest since their initial retreat, but even that didn't last. After several weeks, the Heartless had finally broken through and were on their way to the Heart of Atlantis.
That was Max's destination among all the chaos of the fight. He continued running for the large crystal that powered the city, cutting down Heartless with every step. They had waited to long to call for the retreat, and now he wasn't sure if he could get to the crystal before any of the Heartless could. He could only hope that some of the others had managed to get there first and were fighting them off.
Not that it mattered anyway. They couldn't keep them off.
As the Heart of Atlantis came into view, Max felt his heart sink. Some of the Atlanteans had indeed made it, but he could see they were already being overrun by Heartless. He could see dozens of Shadows and Soldiers piling on top of small clusters of defenders as Darksides spurned them forward while sending orbs of dark energy into the defenders who had not yet been overrun. The Drydenian stopped in his tracks, unable to do anything but stare in horror as he watched what he knew was the fall of another world.
He was shaken out of his daze when a Flying Soldier swooped down and knocked him to the ground, sending Quicksilver out of his hand and skidding across the ground. He whirled around and punched the Heartless off of him and then sent a ball of water careening into it like a cannon ball. The Flying Soldier burst into a mist of darkness as the ball crashed into it. With the Flying Soldier dispatched, Max retrieved Quicksilver and ran towards the Heart of Atlantis, cutting down any Heartless in his path. As he got closer, the masses of Heartless got thicker and thicker, and he started using his power over water to clear a path, bursts of water scattering small clusters of Shadows and Soldiers and spiked cannonballs of ice barreling through entire crowds of Heartless.
He was nearly to the Heart when he was suddenly knocked flying by a Large Body. He skidded several feet across the ground before coming to a stop. As quickly as he could, he got back to his feet and launched several spears of ice at the Large Body. The ice embedded itself throughout the Large Body's torso, piercing through to the other side. As the enormous Heartless fell to the ground and turned to mist, Max caught sight of the Heart again...
The defenders had been completely overwhelmed already and Heartless were already crawling all over the Heart. He just stopped and stared, watching as they began to consume the heart of the world. It didn't take long before he felt the ground begin to shake, and then seemingly fall away beneath his feet as Darkness began to close in around him. The last thing he remembered before blacking out was the mass of yellow eyes all around him, and then everything went black...
*********************
Surprisingly, Max began to feel himself slowly returning to consciousness.
His first reaction to this was anger: at how he had survived the destruction of another world; at the heartless for taking it; at himself for being unable to stop them. His anger flashed white hot as he continued shaking off unconsciousness, until he took in a deep breath and felt a sharp pain in his sides. He groaned and shifted where he lay, eyes still closed, and felt every muscle in his body scream at him in protest. He hadn't realized how much strain the battle for Atlantis had put on his body.
He just stopped moving and lay there for a few moments, giving his mind time to wake up before forcing his body to move. Finally, after several long minutes that seemed an eternity, he opened his eyes and forced himself to his feet despite his body's protests. Once he was standing, he slowly and gingerly bent down and retrieved Quicksilver from where it was laying nearby and made sure his spear was still strapped to his back. Then he set about looking around to try and figure out where he was.
He was in a long alleyway between tall buildings with a narrow view of a dark, seemingly starless sky. The buildings themselves looked run-down, on the verge of being ruins. Max slowly made his way toward the nearest exit of the alleyway and emerged onto a wide street filled by buildings similar to the ones flanking the alleyway. He felt like he had been here before, but he couldn't pin it down. While the city looked like it could be deserted, he saw a few people still wandering the streets, all of them seemingly nervous and anxious. He began to slowly make his way down the street, looking for anything that tell him where he was.
As he came upon a small town square, and finally recognition came upon him: He was in The Sandlot in Twilight Town.
It was very different though. As he looked up to the sky, he could see the pieces of a shattered moon hanging there shedding a pale, eerie light upon the city. He looked around at everything again: the nearly ruined buildings, the starless sky, the lack of Twilight Town's distinctive eternal sunset. He had seen this sort of effect on a world before, and he knew there was only one thing that did this to a world normally so full of life and color. The realization chilled him to the bone, as if someone had injected ice into his veins, and left him frozen in place, staring up at the sky.
Twilight Town was under siege from the Heartless, and it didnt seem like it had much time left before they won...
After the fight at the manor, Avari had been more restless than usual. There seemed to be a lot of things going on in the background that none of them understood yet. She wanted to know who that mysterious cloaked figure was, or where that sheet of paper came from if not that moogle's book. What was the Realm of Darkness, and why would a castle be there? Who was Aqua, or Vexen, for that matter? All these questions swirled relentlessly in Avari's head, until she couldn't stand just sitting around anymore.
Unsure of what else to do until she could question Artemicon, Avari decided to head back to the mansion and see if she could find any clues about the Heartless, or that stranger. She moved at a brisk pace, her hands clenched into fists as she cut through an alleyway to take a shortcut through the Sandlot. She was tired of feeling powerless, and she probably would not have made it if it hadn't been for that cloaked figure saving her as well as Oswald and Charme. That person saved them, so they had to be a good guy, but why did they just disappear like that? Better still, what was that strange portal they walked into?
It was maddening, knowing so little. What was she supposed to do after seeing all of this? Hopefully she would find some answers at the mansion. As she entered the Sandlot though, it appeared that the mansion would have to wait. She stepped out into the clearing and paused, directly in the Max's line of sight and looked at him with a blank expression. The man seemed oddly dressed, just like Marmadue had, and she hadn't seen him around town before- she was certain she would remember if she had seen someone clad in armor and carrying weapons like that. She inwardly sighed, assuming he was a new refugee. Seeing yet another newcomer was starting to take its toll, as it meant yet another world was gone, and no one knew how to reverse that. With each world disappearing it felt like the clock was slowly counting down on them.
After a moment of silence, Avari realized that she had been staring in the midst of her thoughts, and finally spoke up, "Hey... I haven't seen you around before." She turned to face him and crossed her arms, unsure of what else to say. This guy didn't exactly seem to be in a panic like Marmadue had. In fact, this guy reminded her more of Jin than anything, having an air of intensity hanging around him. He could even be dangerous, for all she knew.

Max continued staring around at the town around him, so different from the Twilight Town he had known before he had been stranded on Atlantis. He turned his gaze up to the starless night sky and took in just how empty it looked and a shiver ran down his spine. He was so lost in his own thoughts, he didn’t even notice the girl staring at him until she said something. When she finally did, he slowly and silently turned his head to look at her, now acutely aware of a throbbing pain in his head.
“Yeah, I haven’t…been here for quite a while,” Max replied to the girl quietly, slowly moving over towards her. He walked a little funny due to the aching stretch in his legs, though he found as he moved around more the aches and pains lessened somewhat. He pushed them out of his mind though. He needed to find out what happened to Twilight Town, and this girl might have answers.
“What happened here?” he asked her as he came to stand in front of her, gesturing gingerly around them at the city, “The last time I visited Twilight Town, it was a vibrant city full of life. Now it almost seems…”
Like it’s a battlefield? he thought to himself as he paused momentarily. He quickly continued though, “It almost seems abandoned.”
It was hard not to feel cautious when an armed stranger decides to approach someone, but Avari consciously remained firmly where she stood, not wanting to appear afraid or intimidated. As he mentioned having been here before though, any thoughts that he could be dangerous were replaced with curiosity about him. "Wait, you've been to Twilight Town before? And left?" Her eyes widened as she gazed upon him with a noticeably increased interest. Of all the people she had met in town, whether they be locals or refugees from another world, she had never come across someone who had been able to leave.
She then realized that based on his question, he hadn't been to Twilight Town for quite some time, before she wound up here several years ago, for all she knew. She glanced around, reassessing the surroundings and imagining how shocking of a sight it must have been for him. Avari had been present before the world became so dark and gloomy, of course, but it had been this way for so long that she had grown accustomed to it.
"You really haven't been here for awhile then." Avari's eyebrows furrowed as she crossed her arms, "Do you know about the heartless? I think they're pretty much the ones that caused this whole mess. And there's so many refugees from other worlds now..." She paused, glancing back at him.
"I'm Avari by the way. If you really have been here before, how is it that you left? I've been here for awhile now, and I've never heard of anyone leaving. I have to get out of here, my brother- I'm looking for him." She asked the question rather pointedly, eager to hear a response. If he really did have a way to leave Twilight Town, than she had to know, in order to find her brother. She would do anything to acquire any hidden knowledge this guy might have.

As he approached the girl, he could tell she was somewhat nervous around him. He had to remind himself that the people of Twilight Town weren't used to seeing people walking around in armor and carrying weapons like he was. To him, it was just natural, something he didn't think about. It was almost like his weapons and armor were a part of him. It would be different for the town's citizens, as well as other who had grown up on worlds more peaceful than his own, which was most.
He saw a marked change in her attitudre when he mentioned he hadn't been to Twilight town in a while. That immediately sparked some curiosity in max, who wondered why someone who already knew of other worlds would be so interested in how he traveled how he traveled between worlds. What interested him, though, was when she mentioned the Heartless, asking if he had ever heard of them. He started to laugh at the question, but the pain in his muscles made him stop and groan quietly instead.
"Yeah, I know the Heartless. Maybe a little too well," he responded, holding a hand to his side in a useless attempt to lessen the pain in his muscles. The girl went on to introduce herself as Avari and asking again about how he traveled between worlds, hoping she could use it to find her brother. Max silently thought to himself that her brother was probably gone, but he didn't say anything. He might have been abrasive and blunt, but he wasn't an ass.
"Nice to meet you Avari. I'm Max," he responded, "And I had a gummi ship, but it won't do you any good. Sorry. It was destroyed. I'm stuck in Twilight Town now, just like you
"Now, what can you tell me about how bad the Heartless are here?" he asked her, slowly looking around the Sandlot at the ruined buildings, searching the shadows for any hint of the Heartless' telltale yellow eyes, "How often do they attack people?"
She watched as his hand went to his side, noticing that he was injured now, and that he likely had just escaped a battle against heartless before he wound up here. The situation was the same for many, so she didn't know why it had taken her so long to notice he was hurt. "Are you okay? Here, I have a friend who can treat your wounds, he should be somewhere around Market Street now."
She paused as he mentioned something called a gummi ship. She had never heard of that before, but was that the only way to leave the world? But the word sounded so strange to her, all she could say in response was, "Gummi ship...?" She quirked a brow at his question about the heartless, as it typically wasn't the question newcomers asked; but then again, he wasn't new to Twilight Town, supposedly. "I dunno. They're always lurking somewhere. They're getting stronger too..." She added on, picturing the beastly heartless she and the others fought at the manor.
She scratched the back of her head, wanting to ask more about this gummi ship he mentioned, but he was focused on the heartless. "Look, why don't we get you all healed up, and then you can ask me whatever you want to know. Okay?"

“If you know about airplanes, gummi ships are kind of like that except they fly between worlds,” he explained when she seemed confused.
Max just let out a quiet sigh and shook his head as Avari mentioned taking him to a healer down on Market Street. He didn’t need a healer, just some time to move around and limber up his muscles again. That would take care of most of the aches and pains, and the rest would go away in a few days’ time. What really interested him was how she said the Heartless seemed to be growing stronger. Before he could say anything, though, she mentioned getting him healed up before he asked any questions.
“No, I don’t need a healer,” he said, shaking his head, “I just worked every muscle in my body really hard fighting the Heartless. I’m just sore and stiff, not hurt.”
As he finished speaking, he caught a small blur of movement above them in his peripheral vision. As he turned his head to look, he was greeted by the sight of a shadow dropping towards them from the rooftop behind Avari. In an instant, his instincts took over and the aches and pains in his body were momentarily forgotten as he gave a backhanded swing at the Heartless. As his closed fist came in contact with its head, one of its clawed hands raked across a small section of unprotected skin on Max’s arm, leaving a series of ugly slashes as it was sent sprawling across the concrete.
Max didn’t have time to finish the small heartless off, however, as he noticed another half dozen shadows leaping towards them, just like the first. He used his power to reach out to a nearby water faucet. He pulled on the water, making the faucet itself go shooting across the sandlot as he brought a burst of water into the shadows just in time to knock them away from Avari and himself.
As they landed on the concrete in a heap, the Drydenian Soldier drew Quicksilver and brought the gleaming black blade around to slice into the first shadow, which had launched another attack against them. The sword stroke caught it midair, the shadow disappearing in a puff of darkness.
“It just never ends, Azeran damn them,” he muttered as he turned to face the small pile of shadows that had started getting to their feet….

"Man how long has it been since I had a bed?" Oswald asked himself as he was walking into the Sandlot to go to Market Street. He then stopped as he saw a couple shadows spring up from the darkness. They just keep showing up, don't they? he thought to himself as he pulled out his remote to shoot some electricity at them until he noticed a newcomer. The stranger was apperently proficient in controlling water or something of the sort, as he pushed them all back.
"Hey, uh, Avari what's going on here?" he asked as he fired some electricity at a shadow which dissipated it. It was always monsters in the street these days, even if Oswald wanted a place to stay, they were everywhere. "Welcome to the town of these things new guy, so are you good at fighting?" Maybe I should pull out the crystal that guy gave me, he thought to himself as he cast blizzard against two shadows that appeared behind him.
Avari frowned at the man's stubborn refusal to see a healer, "Surely it wouldn't hurt to at least get looked at?" Her thought was interrupted though as a shadow popped out and Max sent it flying with a simple backhand. Without hesitation, Avari turned on her heels to face the rest of the heartless, and reactively shot off a fireball. In the moment of surprise, however, Avari aimed too high and only managed to hit one of the shadows in the back of the group, but luckily water sprouted forth and knocked the rest away. She glanced back at Max, but he paid her no heed as he then withdrew his weapon and plunged it into the first heartless that tried to pounce them. Sure, Avari had noticed he was armed and seem well-acquainted with battle, but the fact that he seemed so prepared for the heartless caught her off guard.
She quickly shook off the thought and shot another fireball, this time hitting the center of the group now that she had gained her focus. They all vanished with a poof, but several more shadows soon took their place. She glanced over after hearing her name and spotted Oswald, using his electricity and now ice magic, she noticed. "Oh you know, Oswald, same old same old. Picked up some new tricks have you?" She glanced around at the group of heartless, saving her shots for when they clustered together so she could take them out with one blow. If there was one thing she learned from the heartless she and Oswald fought, it was that Avari's fireballs took a lot out of her. If she didn't aim her shots well, it would be a complete waste, and she would run out of juice fast.
They had to ensure that no heartless left the Sandlot. They were dangerously close to Tram Common, where most of the other refugees were; they couldn't put everyone in danger. She managed to land a couple more fireballs, and stayed beside Max, who seemed to be able to deal with them quite effectively once they got within a certain range. She wasn't quite sure what to make of his water magic yet.

As the initial shadow disappeared back to the darkness, Max turned to face the others and saw...a giant, man-like rabbit pointing a remote control at the shadows. The Rabbit sent a bolt of electricity from its remote as it called out a greeting to Avari and himself. If he had been been fresh out of his homeworld, he would have found the sight so bizarre he would have been dumbstruck at the sight of it all. Now, he was only briefly distracted by the sight of a magic wielding rabbit.
Avari had decimated the first group of shadows, but they were quickly replaced by another, larger group which easily doubled the former in size. Max was still exhausted from the battle for Atlantis and knew he was in no shape for a protracted fight. He gathered up the water still shooting from the broken faucet, formed it into nearly two dozen small spears of ice, and sent them all at the grouped up Heartless in a vicious volley that ripped through the creatures of darkness. The effort left Max feeling drained and out of breath, though, his battered and exhausted body unable to fight as he normally would.
“There’s your answer,” Max gasped in response to the rabbit’s question as the shadows dissipated, leaving the Sandlot empty but for the three of them. A small twinkling near where the second group of shadows had appeared caught Max’s eye as he tried to catch his breath. He sheathed Quicksilver and slowly moved over to it and picked up a small charm: a fiery red bird, crimson wings spread wide above its head. He inspected it for a moment before shoving it in his pocket.
A shock of pain in his arm brought his attention back to the gashes the first shadow had left in his arm. He looked down and saw blood running down his arm, thick red drops falling from his fingertips. He turned towards Avari and held his arm up towards her to show her the small wounds.
“I guess i could use that healer afterall,” he said, still trying to catch his breath.
"That's a great answer," Oswald said while looking over the Sandlot which then brought his back to the new guy who had started bleeding, "Oh! Oh gosh. I got something for that," he said as he fumbled around in his pockets for the crystal. "Ah here it is," he said as he pulled out a blue crystal, "The shady guy in the ally said that I just had to focus on it and my dreams would come to life. Which was a very odd way of saying, hold on." Oswald thought hard with all his might on the creature within the crystal, until the crystal started glowing in Oswald's hand.
Then with a sudden flash a six-legged purple-blue cat appeared with bells on the tips of it's ears and an eighth note as a tail. "I can summon this cat! Tada," he said as he shook his hands towards the cat as it licked it's front paw and started cleaning it's ear, "Okay, you're really not helping your cause there kitty. I know it doesn't look like much but it can heal you! Go on Kitty heal the new guy." as he said this the cat walked over to the stranger and started dancing around the him.
Avari took an instinctual step back as Max's water magic became spears of ice and came down on the remaining heartless, ending the battle with one fell swoop. She was surprised to see how powerful his magic was, she couldn't help but wonder if he was as powerful as Jin seemed to be. She hoped so, seeing as Twilight Town could use all the fighters it could get. After a moment or two, she gave Max a curt nod in response to his change of heart about the healer, but Oswald seemed to have just the thing to take care of that.
She smiled at Oswald and put her hands on her hips, "Wow Oswald, you really stepped up your game since we last fought together!" Avari laughed nervously as she scratched that back of her head, "Guess I have some catching up to do!" She watched as the strange cat danced around Max and then glanced back to Oswald, "Where'd you even find a fancy crystal like that anyway?" And to think a cat appeared from that crystal; it was a bizarre to one such as Avari, but if it was a cat that could heal wounds, it sure sounded useful!
"Oh, right." She motioned to her new-found acquaintance, "Oswald, this is Max, Max, this is my friend Oswald." She smiled at the both of them.

As Max mentioned that healer friend of Avari’s, the Man Rabbit piped up and said he could help. Without waiting for a response, Man Rabbit pulled out some sort of crystal and used it to summon a strange, colorful looking cat which then began to dance around Max, colorful, magical light spilling all over the soldier. He felt suspicion towards it at first, but then the magic began to work on his battered body, healing the gashes on his arm and easing the aching in his muscles somewhat. It even took the edge off of his exhaustion, though it by no means eliminated it.
Max looked back to the Man Rabbit as Avari introduced him as Oswald. He readjusted the bracers on his wrists as he walked over to Oswald and held his hand to shake.
“Thanks for the help, Oswald” he said as he worked his limbs, clearly enjoying the fact that he could move without his muscles protesting too strongly, “My body isn’t telling me how much it hates me when i move now.
“We may want to get out of here before more Heartless show up,” he said, looking from Oswald to Avari, “I’m sure you guys know the safest areas?”
"Your, uh, welcome I guess?" Oswald said to Max, "Not a lot of areas are safe, besides personal houses I guess, but I don't have a house, maybe Avari does." As he said this he motioned to Avari. "Besides that, umm, mind if I ask what world you've come from? It's a bit personal I know but a lot of Worlds are gone and I want to know why." Plus, he thought to himself, I want to know if Ortensia might have been there.
"Hey, Kitty, come here," Oswald crouched down and motioned for the cat to come back to him, which it did it then sat down on the ground and started sleeping. "Anyway, Avari, I got the crystal from some guy in an alley, he just kinda motioned out for me and handed me the crystal, kind of weird actually. Anyway, Max, the mansion past the forest in the hole in the wall at Market Street is full of monsters, you wouldn't want to go there alone. We all almost died due to a huge beast that surrounded us in a shadow.
"Well I wouldn't call it a house, I just have a small apartment room, but the building's in bad shape and I have to climb in through the window." Most buildings were either occupied or in ruins, but Avari continued to use the same room she had when she first arrived in Twilight Town, even if had become more difficult to maneuver into the room. It was no problem for Avari, who had spent her childhood climbing around places she shouldn't have back in Radiant Garden, but she imagined others might have more trouble.
"Most people gather around Tram Common though, and everyone looks after one another. Right Oswald?" She smiled at Oswald and gave a curt nod. Avari glanced back at Max, then looked to Oswald again, "Apparently Max has been here before, a long time ago. I've never heard of someone who could travel across worlds the way he described." She then glanced back at Max, "Yeah, there was a big heartless at the mansion recently... it was really dangerous, but then someone saved us. I don't know who though, they disappeared as soon as they killed the heartless."
"Well, that aside, did you want to head to Tram Common? Perhaps someone you know ended up in town as well, you might find them there." Max hadn't been quite what Avari had expected. Most new refugees decided to look for their friends and family as their first plan of action, but Max was more interested in the state of town. He seemed to have the mindset of a soldier, which seeing the way he fought, Avari wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
