ORIGINAL or CANON: Original
Inspiration: My inspiration for this character is that the majority of characters within the forums are based around melee and arcane builds. I wish to make a character that is based less on those attributes, one more unique in the tools and weapons they use. Magic will still play a role in what they do, but they will hardly use magic in a direct way, but instead through their gadgets.
Name: Daros Teel of Direk
Nickname: Ros
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Species: Tirealian (See Shaizen Latross for an explanation of the race)
Being Type: Somebody
Position: Chaotic good. While he is on the side of Light, and is a member of the Scribes, Luniel's arcane and tech guild, he often follows his own motivations and works on his own off-the-record and usually unapproved or banned projects. he works on these projects because he sees potential in them to help in the battle against the Darkness.
Groups: In Luniel, he was a slightly higher rank within the Tech section of the Scribes Guild. While he had no one to work under him, and gave no orders, only a choice few could give him orders at the same time.
Current Primary Objective: Aid in the fight against Darkness while searching for any other survivors from Luniel.
Learning type: Daros learns best on his own, sometimes by watching the techniques of others and combining them with his own. He often makes new gadgets simply by putting two together and seeing what happens.
Home World: Luniel (http://worlddestiny.proboards.com/thread/18396/luniel?page=1&scrollTo=121376)
Passive:
Heartborn SparkWeapon: Ruby and Pearl: Daros' main weapons are a pair of self-made bolt launchers that take the appearance of slightly-over-sized revolvers. Both made from what Tirealians know as Darkened Iron, the main part of their build is pitch black, both giving off an dark aura. The handles of the guns are wrapped in strips of cloth that hang loose by their ends, but are tied before then so that they stay tight to the guns.
The guns are spring loaded, shooting off sharpened rods of varying material. The rods can be made from practically any material, so long as said material is able to be shot off without crumbling under the pressure of contact with an enemy.
The firing mechanism of the weapons are modded so that the springs are compacted, adding to their firepower and causing the rods to shoot at higher velocity than normal. Shock absorbers are set in the chambers in order to compensate against the extra power.
Each segment of the guns is separated by energy conductors. These strips of material are the main property of these weapons, and allow them the ability to channel energy into the rods and add arcane power to their attacks. The top of the guns have slots in which in form of Materia may be fit into. Once Materia is placed within these slots, their power is channeled through the conductors which now glow with a color based on the type of magic which passes through them.
The energy is then passed through to the bolts within the chambers, which take on different properties based on the type of Materia used in this process.
Daros himself is able to charge them with his own inborn Thunder magic. Any charge using Materia takes a full post to charge the weapons, even if using the same type of Materia twice.
Any synthesized materia cannot be used with the bolt guns, as the conflicting magics will overload the conductors and fry the components of the guns.
Attack/Debuff Materia: These Materia can harm targets based off the descriptions below. However, if Daros were to flip the conductors to their alternate setting, they could be aimed at allies and used to increase the respective elemental defense or attack of the magic currently being used in the gun.
Earth: Targets get knocked back and over, larger targets being staggered a little based on their over all size.
Fire: Targets burn over time, taking damage constantly until the effect wears off.
Ice: Targets freeze, becoming vulnerable to physical attacks for a time.
Light: Erupts into a brilliant, bright light that blinds hostile targets and covers allies in a temporary barrier that can take a single hit.
Water: Counters the effects of fire attacks, or strengthens the effects of thunder attacks by erupting into a stream of water as it approaches the targets.
Thunder: Stuns the main target, chaining out to targets in a ten foot radius around main target.
Shadow: Targets multiple enemies and chains between each one at random intervals, causing more damage as it hits the same target multiple times.
Wind: The bolt becomes a high speed ballistic missile that pierces though enemies, leaving a gust of wind that carries its targets along with it before throwing them into the air, releasing them to fall or be attacked by allies in the area.
Poison: Obvious effect, this materia poisons the target.
Gravity: Pointed at the ground, this Materia creates a twenty-foot-wide area that levitates all enemies for a post.
Support Materia: These Materia all give supportive/healing properties to the bolts with Daros' guns.
Cure: Pointed at the ground, this Materia creates an area-of-effect that heals allies gradually at a slow rate, just enough so that those healed can continue fighting.
Reflect: Aimed at an ally, this bolt will burst with a reflect spell shrouding the ally, acting as a normal reflect spell would.
Barrier: Same basic principle as Reflect, aimed at an ally and releases a barrier spell around them.
Gadgets: Being the technological 'miracle worker' he was known as in Luniel, Daros has often found himself in the process of designing and creating new and more creative forms of devices. Some of these he carries with him for both everyday use and in battle.
Compactor: A device he made when he realized he needed a way to hide his less-than-legal hoverbike, Daros designed this palm-sized, Mini Spell-infused gadget as an effort to make larger, bulky thing smaller and thus easier to carry around. Usable only on objects that can be considered as static, once the device is attached to an item, it can be activated to shrink the item enough so that it may be carried in a bag.
Hoverbike: Daros' prized possession. Having won it during a bet with a fellow Tech within the Scribes, Daros modified the bike beyond the legal status, forcing him to hide the bike when inside the city limits. Once a hoverbike capable of high-level combat, the journey to Twilight Town has caused all of the hoverbike's combat capabilities have been shot. The bike now is only capable of high speed travel, as the components to fix the combat systems are non-existent within Twilight Town. (This has been fit with the Compactor device.)
The Hoverbike can only hover a few inches off the ground, just enough so that small bumps don't interrupt its movement.
Goggles: A pair of goggles that are standard in the Scribes. The goggles allow the wearer to see magic auras. When given to Daros, he had little use for them due to his work being tech based, but liked their design. They are made of a brass-like metal, the lens themselves made of normal glass and lined with Lunar Steel, giving the edge of their frame a silvery hue. A leather strap connects the two ends of the goggles, allowing them to also be hung around the neck. In order to use them for his own purposes, Daros modified them with a secondary lens that allowed him to see the inner workings of technology without actually having to dismantle it.
Toolkit: Equipped with a compactor, Daros goes no where without this. Usually within the pocket of his jacket which is located on the side of his left forearm, this toolkit has all of Daros' necessary materials and tools to fix most machinery, so long as most of said machines' major components are intact.
Tech/Mana Scanner: While this device is possible to be used to find any functioning tech or mana-based objects (Mana-based objects will only ever be found if bought from the forum shop), Daros mainly uses this wrist-mounted, watch-sized device to keep track of whatever he is currently working on via holographic display which he can alter himself.
Appearance: Daros' appearance is something another Tirealian might see as odd, due to the mixture of Guild standard clothing and personal preferences.
He wears a white T-shirt that has small tears and oil stains on its front, along with a few electrical burns. Over top of this, and only while outside the workshop (Wherever he may decide that to be), he dons a light brown leather jacket with the emblem of the Scribe Techs (An orb of lightning with two crossed wrenches behind) on the upper left side. The jacket is lined with pockets along the arms, each sleeve having three pockets on the outer side. Two pockets can be seen in the 'normal' position around the bottom of the jacket's front side, along with two more on the inside of the jacket.
Both of his hands are covered with brown leather gloves, the fingers only going up to his first knuckle of each finger. The knuckles at the base of his fingers are adorned with silvery metal studs.
Black cargo pants are his go-to legwear, giving him more pockets to hold his gadgets and possibly scrap as well. The pants, much like his shirt except with less tears, have multiple stains and electrical burns spotting their surface. A small patch job can be seen on the inside of his right leg, making one believe there was once a rather sizable hole there at one point. Rubber-soled, black leather boots cover his feet, standard for the Techs due to electrical hazard when stepping across metal vents.
While not wearing them, Daros always has his goggles hanging around his neck by the leather strap which connects the ends of the goggles. The primary lens of the goggles are clear, with each lens having its own secondary lens which Daros flips down via rotating them at the point which he modified the goggles. The right secondary lens is a shimmering purple hue, and is the one that allows him to see arcane auras. The left lens, which is the one that allows him to see the inner mechanisms of tech, is a bright, vibrant blue shade.
Just behind his main pants pockets are the holsters for his custom bolt guns. The guns are holstered with their handles facing front, Daros reaching an arm to its opposite side in order to draw the guns. Straps cross the back of the guns to keep them in place while he is travelling.
While in battle, Daros dons a sleek, black strap that runs from his right shoulder down to his left side. On the surface of this strap are five holsters which hold the Mana Bombs and Mines.
His hair is a dirty blond, an inch in length and spiked up. Hanging down from the hairline above and to the right of his right eye are a few strands of longer hair wrapped in red cloth. This was done by Daros'es sister, who had always wanted to style his hair in some way or other. A cut scar runs across his right jawline, the result of a failed weapons experiment. His eyes, like the average Tirealean, are violet. His however, unlike most, are a bright electrical shade of purple. In most cases outside battle, his mouth is shaped into a crooked, almost cocky smile.
Without his jacket, one can see multiple electrical burn and cut scars on his arms, the most prominent one being a large burn running from the underside of his left wrist halfway up his arm. On the outside of his upper bicep is a tattoo of his Guild's emblem, black in color and about the size of a baseball.
Daros stands at five foot and ten inches tall, and is a rather slim character. With enough muscle to move things around the workshop on his own, he has little more muscle for anything else. His body fat is also rather low, due to his constant work and his rather unhealthy habit of forgetting to eat while working. The combination of the two gives him a more muscular appearance, but in a way where he still seems rather skinny as well.
Personality: Motivation Origin:
Daros is the kind of man who loves to tinker with different kinds of tech. While this was strengthened in the Scribes Guild, it originated with his parents.
His father was also a Tech, though he was a more moderate rank than that which Daros achieved. Despite this, his father had always put the more serious matters of taking care of and improving the cities' power structures. At home however, his father had put Daros and his sister ahead of everything else, and would often bring home different smaller pieces of tech. He would use these minor scraps to show the two of them the basics of how technology ran in the city, and would teach them how to fix certain problems or even how to improve them.
Daros' mother, an aspiring woman with the rank of Mage, would aid them by using her magics to power the scraps. While his mother was a part of the magic side of the Scribes, she still had the natural curiosity and tinkerer's habits of the Techs. She never could seem to get the hang of how technology worked though. Even with this, she had never let it get to her, and could often be found pulling apart scrap technology to try and teach herself how it worked.
The combined knowledge of his father along with the natural curiosity and determination of his mother rubbed off on Daros, making him just as curious as his mother, except with a lack of magic replaced by the smarts and tech savvy of his father. While his sister, who had caught more on to magic like their mother, went off to the Mages, Daros looked to the Techs, determined to find out everything he could about technology and make his own devices that would make both of his parents proud.
Fears, weaknesses and concerns: While he is confident in his work, Daros has a fear that stems from the heights of his father's status within the guild. His father was known as a normal ranked guild member, but was also known as one who worked hard. Despite this, he never got credit where it was due. Due to this, Daros felt that he needed to work hard and climb higher into the ranks of the guild in order to make his father proud, and to prove his family's capabilities. This caused Daros to become afraid of what would happen should he turn out to have less skill, less curiosity and smarts about the tech of Luniel. He knew his father would still be the same, but the guild was a powerful voice when it came down to it. What would happen if the guild decided Daros wasn't good enough? How would his father react to such, or would he be able to react at all?
This fear caused Daros to partake in more than a few less-than-standard tests and experiments with tech that was never approved by the guild. It also made him try harder than he ever had to learn everything he could about tech, and made him fear failing at making any sort of tech work.
Interests, quirks, hobbies and talents: While Daros' main focus is on technology and the gadgets he creates, a certain bet with a friend of his in Luniel got him into another hobby. Daros found out once he won the hoverbike from his friend that he loved to race. Not just any race either. Daros raced with weapons. High speed was fun, but add a few low-powered weapons that could be cranked up to high demolition firearms, and Daros was happy. He didn't want to hurt anyone, though. So he made the weapons on his hoverbike able to turn from high powered and destructive, to low powered tasers.
A second hobby of his can be seen in the many notebooks within his workshop. While now he only has a couple of them, his workshop had a full shelf dedicated to notebooks full of sketches of the many landscapes of Luniel. From the erupting volcanoes in the Darkness' Domain, to the tranquil plains of the Light's Landing, Daros had traveled to many places just so he could sit and relax, capturing the moment in an almost perfect sketch.
His main quirk comes when he is thinking of a design for a gadget, and has no paper and pencil to write anything down on. When this happens, he often stands perfectly still save his right arm and his face. His arm will be reached up to the hair his sister had always done for him, the few strands that were longer than the rest of his hair. His fingers would be twisted with these strands, rolling the hair between his fingers as his face would contort in concentration. His eyes would fog over as he would become lost in thought, his lips moving in a silent whisper as he spoke to himself about each little detail of whatever his mind was busy with.
Working with other and in battle: While in his workshop Daros is a rather efficient worker, he isn't what many call organized. Daros can tell where everything is, but only he can. His workshop is usually cluttered with scraps and tools, with rather unusual paths that Daros can traverse with ease, but others may find difficulty getting by. Due to this, most tend to just stay by the entrance to his shop, looking in while he does what he needs to do.
Another thing about him is that he has a bad habit about being quickly irritated when bothered in his workshop while his door is closed and a 'closed' sign is hung outside it. He only does this when he is working on something he sees as sensitive or something that requires his full attention. Many who have bothered him while the door is closed and sign up have often found some scrap piece or other thrown at them once he finally answers the door.
Besides this, he is usually a guy most find easy to get along with. Known as friendly, cheerful and always up for a good laugh, few have had problems getting along with him. The only exceptions to this might be the few who saw him as a rival within the guild.
As part of training within the Scribes was learning to work with others, Daros is usually a rather good team player. He listens to those around him and tries to think of ways he could help them better their own plans. He was never one for the direct spotlight, and would rather share it with others, being known as part of a team rather than a lone victor.
All Scribes, no matter what, are given supportive combat training, and are tasked to come up with ways to support others using their own techniques. Due to this training, Daros often finds himself looking out for others first when it comes to battle. While he still fights using Ruby and Pearl, he will often pull back in order to use his guns to give more defensive or offensive power to his allies, occasionally healing allies when he sees them in trouble. When he comes across some sort of obstacle, whether it be an enemy or some kind of man-made obstruction, his mind flicks into overdrive as he runs through as many possibilities as he is able to in order to get rid of it. If worst comes to worst, he may just chuck one of his Mana Bombs at it, infusing the bomb with most destructive magic he currently has on hand.Natural Affinities/Abilities/Skills: Due to his time being spent creating and improving technology, Daros has only a single magic ability, one that he made specifically for when he had to traverse the tunnels under the cities which were often filled with electrical hazards.
Thunder Cloak: By shrouding his body with an armor form of Thunder magic, Daros becomes invulnerable to Thunder Magics, and more resistant to physical attacks as well. This armor doesn't just increase his defense, but any physical attack that makes contact causes a reactive counter-attack that stuns the enemy.
One-time-use Mana-Redistribution Barrier: Originally created for a Scribe friend who excelled in magics but had low mana reserves of their own, this device is thrown to a surface where it latches and holds on. Once it is on a stable surface, a barrier disperses from the top and covers a ten-foot-tall, five-foot-wide wide from up to three attacks, depending on the power of the attacks.
Any magic attacks that hit the barrier are absorbed, the mana gathered then gets transferred from the device to whoever the device is protecting. The downside to this is that it uses the full amount of energy from the device, causing the barrier to fall.
Can be used once per battle, but is rechargeable outside battle. Bombs: Bombs are the original setting, and are set to detonate upon impact once charged and thrown. While any Materia can be used to charge them, the properties given are the basic properties of the Materia used to charge, with Cure, Barrier and Reflect Materia having no effect at all.
Limitations/Drawbacks: Daros' main weakness come from his lack of strength. While he is able to handle everything in the workshop by himself, when it comes to battle his strength is rather underwhelming. This is due to the fact that he had only supportive combat training. Another side effect is this is that he can take less damage than most others.
Daros' Thunder Cloak can be used immediately, and lasts up to three posts. The reason for this is that it is charged directly by his own inborn Thunder magics, and uses up energy rather quickly especially when the counter measures are activated. Once deactivated, Daros can only use it if he recharges using a Thunder Materia, as his own mana reserves take quite some time to regenerate.
While ammo for Ruby and Pearl can be made of any hardened material, any ammo Daros uses during battle is only that which he can carry on him. At most, by using all extra pockets he is able to, he can carry around fifty bolts on his person. Once these are used up, he can only rely on his gadgets and any Materia he may have. If needed, he will pack a bag full of extra ammo, but only when he knows an upcoming fight will be an exceedingly tough one.
History: Daros originated within the Darkness' Domain, his family residing in Direk, the city also known as the Scribes' headquarters.
With his father, Gale, being a moderately-ranked of the Techs and his mother, Liz, being a Mage, it was obvious that he and his younger sister, Amber, were going to become a part of the same guild. This became more obvious when Daros began to show natural skill with tech, being able to watch his father take apart different gadgets just a few times before he was able to tell how it worked.
Once his natural curiosity and skill with tech was realized, Daros' father decided to help him further his abilities by teaching him personally. Everyday after he came home, his father would take a few hours to teach Daros a different lesson in the technology of Luniel and how each component worked. The only things he had any real problem with was the magic side of things. While he excelled with technology, Daros had very little skill with magics, and little mana to match. Luckily, he did not need to worry too much about this in order to get into the Scribes.
Years of training through his father's teachings, his sister learning under their mother to join the Mages of he Scribes Guild. Side by side he and his sister's knowledge and skill grew with each passing day. On their free time they would go into the city and wander around, occasionally hanging with the few other children of the city. One of their main friends in the city was a boy around their age named Zayon. His father was one of the techs who worked with Daros' father, and their families had always been close to each other. Like Daros, Zayon had the goal of becoming one of the Techs in the Scribes, and his father was also teaching him about technology.
The three of them would always travel the city together, looking for something to do and working together to take care of what was known as a Thunder Hawk. A creature known for being a rather aggressive bird of prey, they had found it abandoned as a chick. Feeling sorry for it and not having the ability to just walk away at the young age they were, they did everything they could to take care of it. The bird was a beautiful creature, covered in shimmering white feathers that sparked with Thunder magic energy. As it grew, some worried it might one day take on the hostile characteristics of the rest of its kind. However, as it grew, the bird remained docile, and would follow the trio everywhere they went.
More years like this went by. Daros and his sister being taught by their parents, the trio of friends and their pet wandering the streets. By the time the three were old enough to enlist as recruits into the Scribes, they had become inseparable. Their bird, named Shocks, was known by everyone in the city as their loyal pet and a favorite among the locals. Daros had by this time acquired his taste in fashion, now donning his jacket and cargo pants, his sister having styled the lock of hair that hung just to the side of his face. Meanwhile, Zayon had become more of a coder, now cool-headed and book-smart. Amber had grown to be a gifted magic-user, and many officials within the guild saw her as a possible next higher-up.
After going through recruitment, Daros found himself alone. With his sister off on her magic training and Zayon training to code the computers which ran the technology, Daros trained by himself with a group of people he had only just met.
They gained their standard gear in phases. First was their boots, to make sure they could walk across metal vents without being shocked. They used these in their first stretch of training, which consisted of learning the tunnels which carried the power lines of the cities. These were filled with electrical hazards, and their first test included getting through the tunnels getting shocked as few times as possible. Daros came out almost unscathed, a loose wire having shocked his arm and giving him his first and worst scar. This wound is now the scar that runs from his wrist to his elbow. It was discovered that this line was an older one that was supposed to have been decommissioned.
Having passed this test with minimal marks against him due to the situation of the wire, Daros went on to acquire his next tool from the Scribes; the goggles which he would later modify. It was explained that they would use these to spot leaking magic energy in order to find where the leak originated. That was their second test, and one that Daros passed with flying colors. Daros found the leak almost instantly, and was able to fix it in record time by patching the leak by welding a strip of Lunar Steel over it.
With only one test left, Daros went to see how his sister and friend were doing. Coding training was short, so Zayon was already waiting at the central square of the city, their favorite Hawk sitting with him. Daros' sister came soon after. Recruiting for the Mages was rather simple, and done one at a time. One just needed to prove at least an adept skill in magic use. Happy that his sister and friend had made it through, Daros still had one last bit of training and a test before he was recruited.
The final bit of training was in combat support. This is where Daros designed his bolt guns. With very little magic abilities of his own, he realized he would need to find another way to support others in combat. And so he began to design a gun that could channel magic in two ways. The first was for damage dealing and putting status effects on the enemies. The second way was to give his allies more defensive or offensive capabilities. The material of the bolts wouldn't matter due to the conductors' ability to channel energy into them in a steady and controlled pace.
Having created these weapons, which he named Ruby and Pearl after the first Head Tech and Sage in history, he was granted his final piece to be an official member of the Scribes; his mark of entry. This is what the tattoo on his upper arm is, the emblem marked on the member to prove his ties to the guild. Now a full member of the guild, Daros ran off to tell his friend and sister. Once they all met up back at their parent's house, they threw a small celebration for the trio of friends.
Afterwards, the three worked hard to rise through the ranks of their individual sections of the Guild. Through his mastery of code, Zayon became Head of his own section, supervising over the other coders and making sure they didn't mix up any codes, working alongside the Head Tech by giving him updates on new or updating codes. Amber proved her mastery of magic time and time again, outdoing those who had studied in the Scribes for years before her and rising to train under the Sage.
Daros, however, had no plans to rise that far. He wanted freedom to do what he wanted, but didn't want to be held down by the duties of one in charge. And so he worked up the ranks to a point where he was just under the Head Tech before he would slow down his pace. He would work so that his place in the ranks was set, but refused to go farther than that. He knew that if he took over any role like that, he wouldn't be able to work on his projects without raising suspicion. He was given a personal workshop with the Scribes Hall, and a nearly limitless order of supplies to work with.
At one point, Daros was approached by the Phoenix Captain, a man named Talon. The Captain had heard of Daros' skill with technology and that he had created his own unique weapons. Intrigued by this, he had decided to ask Daros to help with an experimental weapon. Daros' interest was piqued at the proposition, and accepted the invitation. Arriving at the site of where the weapon was being created, Daros saw that they were attempting to make a massive rifle-like weapon that could harness the pure Darkness directly from the Darkness' Core. This alone was dangerous, and Daros knew this. He saw a challenge however, and got to work trying to find a way to counter the destructive capabilities.
A year went by working on the project before Daros heard that testing the weapon was to begin. He thought that this was a mistake, as they still had no way to counter the Core's destructive power so that the weapon didn't backfire. Despite his protests, the Captain approved the tests. In order to make sure nothing too bad happened, Daros decided to stay and watch. He was a little interested in whether or not it would work, and hoped that it would. The target was a rather large Heartless that had been making its way to the Core for a while. Everything went great until the weapon was fired. As soon as it was initiated, the rifle began to shake violently. The guns' own core began to overheat seconds before a sudden spike in energy caused it to detonate. Shards and Dark energy flew in all directions, including towards Daros.
A beam of pure Darkness rocketed from the core of the gun and shot at Daros, slicing deep into his jaw. The energy caused immense pain that made Daros black out, waking up in the Scribes Guild Healer Hall. he had been out for a few days, his jaw now covered with a bandage. As soon as he tried to speak, pain shot through his jaw once more, a healer showing up and explaining that until it healed, he wouldn't be able to speak without pain. His family and Zayon had visited him every day to ask how he was, checking on his condition. Once he returned home, he was ordered by the Head Tech to take a month off while he healed. He took this time to travel to locations around Luniel, learning more about the other cities and how they ran.
Years later, Daros realized he was starting to become a little bored with the day-to-day routines. In order to fix this, he began looking for something he could do as a hobby. His first choice was his sketches. he had always drawn out visual diagrams for his ideas, but until now that was it. Perhaps he could take his sketches farther. He asked his father if there was any good place to relax and was pointed to a spot outside the city where his father had began his combat training. Arriving there, Daros found a cliff that overlooked a massive mountain range that ran through a good portion of Light's Landing. The trees in the area all had different colored leaves and flowers, giving the landscape a chromatic appearance. This was Daros' first landscape sketching, taking him a few days to complete.
Returning to the Guild, Daros found his workshop filled with orders. In most cases he would be able to get through work orders in no time. However, the amount of orders he had been given this time kept him busy for a full week. This was different, something he came to enjoy. He decided he would keep doing this, taking a few days off to sketch a new location before returning to find more work ready for him. This kept him happy for a good long while, up until he heard of a fellow Tech racing in the wilds.
Intrigued with this discovery, he found Tech and decided to question him about the racing. The man was rather cocky, talking about how he was the best racer in the business and had never lost. When he saw that Daros didn't believe him, he decided to show off a bit and invited Daros to the track the following day. Accepting the invitation, Daros set out to where he was told to go. Arriving at a cleared out section int eh middle of the woods, he saw the man working on a hoverbike at the side of the track.
He discovered the man had blown a piece on the bottom, the very part that kept the bike off the ground. The piece was a simple thrust that was powered with Fire Magics. It was designed to channel the Fire into a high-powered stream, effectively creating thrusters which lifted the bike off the ground. Daros saw that the piece was cracked along the inside edge, making the stream flow sideways and forcing the bike forward when it was supposed to stay still. The man laughed when Daros said he was able to fix it, saying that Daros had no clue how the bike worked. Thinking he would win some easy favors from him, the man challenged Daros to fix the bike. The victor took the bike and a favor from the loser. Daros accepted this challenge and got to work instantly.
To fix the bike, he would simply weld a piece of Darkened Iron into the crack. The metal had the ability to hold magics without absorbing them unless made into a weapon. Since this was a simple strip, it couldn't absorb any form of magic, and instead sealed the crack so that it let the magic flow along its intended path. Once finished, Daros started up the bike and watched as his work paid off, the hoverbike hovering off the ground and staying in its place. He would look to the man, seeing that he was rather unhappy that he lost. Despite this, he kept his side of the deal, and let Daros keep the bike. Daros felt that, while they had both promised a favor, taking the bike was enough to take from the racer and left with the bike and nothing else.
Over the next few months, Daros spent free time modding the bike with weapons and extra power to make the bike go faster than it was originally intended. As he did this, he would test the modifications done to the hoverbike by racing it against others, making a name for himself as he climbed the ranks of the unofficial racing groups. While he loved his work in the Scribes and sketches, Daros realized that racing would make his life better, making it to where he had a bit of excitement to counter the boredom that came from slow days in the Guild.
This was Daros' life up until Luniel was taken by Darkness. On that day, Daros was in the Guild working within his workshop. He had no idea of the coming Darkness until just before it got to his city. Once he knew of its coming, he rushed to gather some of his gadgets, including his weapons and hoverbike. He knew that if the Darkness was to be survived he would need to be ready for a fight. His next goal was to find his family. He never got that chance, however. Once the Darkness reached him, he was rendered unconscious. Unknown to him, he was wicked off to Twilight Town as he was unconscious, left to fight the Darkness alongside new allies and friends.
Role Playing Sample: My role play sample will be based off Daros' last day working on the weapon which gave him the scar on his jawline.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daros was a very nervous. just under a full year ago to this day, he had begun to help the Phoenix Guild work on an experimental weapon that was powered by the Darkness'es Core itself. This massive, dark crystal was known as one of two of Luniel's sacred crystals. While its counterpart, the Light's Center, was a crystal that healed the wounded and land itself, the Core was a power of complete destruction and mayhem. The two balanced each other out and kept Luniel itself in the same balance.
And the Phoenix Guild wanted to make the power of the Core into a weapon. A weapon charged by the Core would be destructive on a scale that would be hard to rival. And it was his job to make sure that it didn't back fire on them. It was a long and arduous task to get where they were with the weapon. Daros had taken time to work on multiple phases throughout the year, spending weeks, sometimes months to make sure each step was perfect.
The first step was calculating the exact amount of destructive power the weapon would emit. This consisted of tests in which the power of the Core was absorbed into different Reservoir Crystals and firing them off safely via discharging them into sealed chambers filled with conductors. The conductors had a set limit of energy they could absorb in a set amount of time. The charge of each conductor after the weapon was fired was used to calculate the total power. Once these were done, it was discovered that the power was far beyond anything they had expected, and farther than any sort of power absorbing material they had.
The second step was the one they were currently on, due to the problems with the power being so much. Daros had to find some sort of material or mix of materials that could absorb the amount of excess energy that the Core gave off. His first attempt was using either of the energized metals that were unique to Luniel; Darkened Iron and Lunar Steel. These two had a natural property which allowed them absorb energy in the right circumstances. These fell short when it was discovered that the amount they could absorb was severely limited to the size of the piece used. Calculations showed that it was impossible to form the amount of metal needed to absorb the power needed.
Daros'es second go-to material were reservoir crystals themselves. Being what most Tirealians call a Hollow Material, it has absolutely no charge of its own, and is able to absorb enormous amounts of almost any kind of energy. However, they were limited by a factor of time, slowly leaking the energy out as they went unused. This was because of their initial hollow state. This meant that, unless they were used in some other way after the initial firing, they would slowly release the destructive power of the Core.
With two major methods of excess energy absorbers out of the way, Daros had to come up with something else. He decided to try a mix of the metals and shock absorbers. While the metals were to do their job, absorbing as much excess energy as they could, the shock absorbers were designed to counter the force of the energy as it went off. This was supposed to make it to where a small shock wave might emit from the weapon, but hopefully hold back the rest of the energy's power. With this initial plan, Daros and a few other Techs got to work making it a reality.
They worked on this up until the testing phase. First, the barrel of the gun was lined with a melted mix if the two metals so that when they dried, the inside was a smooth finish that absorbed the excess energy. Sensors were connected to this so that the amount of energy absorbed could be measured. The second step of this was to connect the shock absorbers along the sides of the insides of the barrel's mechanisms. This was going to both protect the tech used in the barrel as well as absorb the shock of the energy itself.
But now, on this day, two shock absorbers short from the original plans, Talon had decided they were going to go ahead and test the weapon. Daros knew this was a mistake, and tried to reason with the Phoenix Captain. Before the test was run, he walked up to the man and asked for a private talk. Talon took him to the computer room where all the measurements would be watched. It was here Daros expressed his concern.
"Sir, is I may be straight forward with you, this is a mistake. We haven't finished all the preparations. At this rate, not even half the energy that needs to be absorbed will be. The gun is going to backfire if we test it now. And it will not be without consequences. People will get hurt, they'll..."
At this point the Captain cut him off with a raised hand and a stern face. His voice was serious, and with a hint of disappointment.
'Daros, you are the one who was to work on this part. According to test, what will be absorbed will be enough. You saw that yourself. If we don't test it now, we may never get it done on time. We do this now. Stay here and do your job, and this will all work out.'
Daros would watch as the Captain walked away from him, looking out to the weapon he had helped design. Whatever these new calculations were, and whoever had done them, they were all wrong. He knew this, but he had know way to find out who it was, nor how the calculations were run. All he could do was stay and do his best to make sure everything worked out. He sighed and headed back out to his team who had worked on the project with him. After explaining the situation, they all went to their respective stations to make sure that things stayed steady.
The time to test the weapon came quick, and with it came a feeling of dread. Daros knew this couldn't end well, but he also knew that Talon wouldn't listen to reason. The only option he had was to hope that nothing went wrong, and that the calculations that had been run were correct. Daros stood at the monitor which checked the stability of the weapon while it was fired. As soon as any kind of problem might show, Daros would so what he could to shut the weapon down, though that might not be much.
Daros looked up to see Talon suddenly walking to the main computer room. It appeared as though the time was here. Talon would speak over loudspeakers, letting it be known throughout the compound that weapons testing would begin and that everyone should stay at their stations.
Only a few minutes later, the switch to power up the gun was flipped. A low yet rather disturbing hum emitted from the weapon, filling Daros with an even deeper feeling of dread. This was happening, before it was ready. Yet he couldn't do anything to stop it now. The hum would grow louder as the weapon became charged with more energy from the Core. The weapon's own core, a technologically-enhanced reservoir crystal designed to hold three times the amount of a normal crystal, began to glow a dark violet hue as it was filled with the energy of the Core.
As soon as the gun was finished charging, Daros would look up to Talon, the Captain nodding to signal the firing of the weapon. Daros would hold his finger over the button which would set off the weapon, stopping for a second and hesitating. He knew that pressing this button could bring some extreme damage to those around. In this instance, however, he had little choice. One of the members of the council was giving him an order, and not following the order would be an act of treason. So, with immediate regret, he pressed the button that would jump start a rather horrible instance of destruction.
Things immediately started to go wrong. First, the gun began to shake violently as the energy of the Core was spread to the firing chamber to build up pressure. The vibrations would increase as the chamber was filled to the brim. Once full, sparks began to fly out along the firing chamber. Seeing this, Daros tried to switch the weapon off by hitting the Emergency Stop button. Despite this, however, the weapon did not respond and instead began to spark even more. The firing chamber began its process of releasing the energy into the beam that acted as the projectile.
It was here that it happened. After only a few seconds of charging the beam, every meter that measured the weapon's level of charge began to flash warnings. Almost immediately afterwards, the weapon's core cracked across its entire surface. The crack would shatter the core, setting off a chain reaction which collapsed the barrel of the weapon and cut off the flow of energy. This blockage is the very thing that set off the explosion.
Everything went silent for a split second, a single moment of calm cut off by the sudden and violent eruption of the weapon itself splitting into thousands of pieces. The energy held within the weapon would shoot out from within, sending the pieces of the weapon flying out at extreme speeds. The size of the pieces allowed them to do little damage, maybe some cuts and a few holes through those hit. The true damage came from the destructive energy of the Core that shot out of the weapon's own core.
Small streams of Dark energy zipped through the air and shot through everything they hit. Despite their size, the total damage done from just a single one was equal to that of a high-level magic spell. Every beam would destroy whatever they hit, no matter what it was. Members of both the Scribes and the Phoenix Guild were struck with these beams and left on the ground, pained or unconscious.
Daros found himself at the mercy of one of these beams, even though there was little to almost no mercy shown. A beam shot straight at Daros, aimed for his head. Moving just at the last second, he was able to avoid it for the most part. Even with this, however, he still was struck along his jaw and was instantly left in extreme, burning pain. His jaw felt as though it was being burnt from the inside by the most powerful fire. The pain was more than he had ever felt, and too much for him to handle.
Daros found himself falling to his knees, soon after falling onto his back. What he was feeling was excruciating, beyond anything he had ever felt. His vision was slowly blurred by the pain, everything around him blacking out as he succumbed to the wound given to him. The last thing he saw before completely falling unconscious was Talon being knocked down by a shard of the weapon as it flew at high speeds through the glass that was suppose to act as a barrier.
Questions/Comments/Suggestions?Let it be known that, while Daros is indeed a tech and support based character, he is limited greatly by certain factors.
Twilight Town is a barren wasteland, and has very little to contribute for tech. This will make it so that, in order to get special tech, he will have to venture out into dangerous territories and more than likely face tough foes.
All of his tech has the ability to break, with the exception of Ruby and Pearl due to the fact that they already have the limit of ammunition.
His hoverbike is strictly for outside-of-combat-use, as its combative capabilities were shot when Daros came here.
Unless temporarily given to him by another, the only materia Daros can use to charge his tech is that which he personally owns.
