In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

A lone figure traveled the market place, not looking for a place to lie her head, or to look into any abandoned stores for food or supplies. No, this figure sought to find something they remembered. Books. Sure, they had read plenty of them already, but people with a love for literature never truly had enough. Even when they got to the point where they could predict the outcome of a situation before the 'reveal', it persisted, like the knowledge of how to ride a bike persisted.
The tall figure swept from shadow to shadow carefully, as if trying to avoid being spotted and talked to. Eventually stopping in the abandoned market in front of a small, wooden shop that seemed to be in disrepair. A sign with a book on it overhead hanging by one rusted metal ring, as the other had already broke with time. The doors to the establishment were also hanging on by a thread, but that didn't seem to matter to the person as they pushed into the building.
If someone had came around before, they'd probably have looted the shelves themselves, if anything. Books themselves didn't serve as good kindling typically. Paper burned fast, and wouldn't maintain a fire for extended periods of time without logs to go with it. One would likely run out of shelves before they ran out of books. Plus, with the building itself being wood, starting a fire inside wasn't a logical decision to keep out of the cold.
With that in mind, they still kept themselves prepared for anything. A hand raised poised to construct, to bring to life what she need if someone was inside the building, as she went about rummaging through the piles of books and whatever else caught her eye.

Books contain so many thoughts and ideals, Who are we to say some cannot be real?
Tomes of knowledge lined the walls of the tiny store, most covered in dust, but some lay in piles on the floor, clean as the day they had first sat upon the shelves. The hustle and bustle of the refugees outside the store easily masked any noise coming from within, though most dared not enter a clearly condemned building. At least, not most normal people. A flick of an ear, and a raised head were swift motions by a red coated doll, the machination peering behind one of the aisles and spotting the far taller woman.
"Fan of reading, miss? Who knows what kind of intellect runs through these books!" Harukaka introduced himself, walking out from behind the aisle and giving the tall woman a bow. He noticed that she was looking over some of the books before he had made his presence known, so his assumption was a fair one to make.
"I'm currently looking around for books on old passageways and perhaps hidden chambers, even a rumor would be nice to get things going around here. After all, no one wants to stay cooked up in Twilight Town for the rest of their days, when there was, and still can be a vast galaxy to explore! Oh, but I'm being rude, my name is Harukaka, what might yours be?" Harukaka would ask, albeit running his tongue off just a bit at the excitement of seeing someone willingly entering such a decrepit store in search of lost knowledge. After all, what kind of thief would loot a store like this if not for expanding their mind with the fantasies and ideas that a novella would contain.

Surprising someone that was expecting to be alone typically wasn't a good idea, something that Harukaka would quickly realize as the tall figure brought up her hand in a defensive stance, casting her eyes rapidly around till they fell on the...cat?
Defensive still, they'd observe as the red doll spoke, a few letters spawning in the air around her palm, circling slowly, obviously filled with magical energy. The introduction and words that the other spoke earning nothing more then a blank stare from the presumed woman. Body rigid, ready to spring into action at the littlest of things. Eventually, if the pause went on long enough, she'd part her lips to respond to them too. Words unsteady, as if they hadn't spoke in awhile and were testing their voice.
"I'm...Esme. You really shouldn't sneak up on people like that...You could end up getting hurt."
And with that, the words they had spawned in the air began to slowly multiple as the woman returned to rummaging through books. Casual, but still obviously prepared for combat if it arose. 'High-strung' some might say. Maybe she wasn't used to hanging around people being an easy thought for a stranger to conjure up.

Books contain so many thoughts and ideals, Who are we to say some cannot be real?
It was hard for Harukaka not to tilt his head, watching as the words spun around in front of the young woman's hand. Recognizing that some sort of magic was afoot, he kept his distance, allowing Esme to calm herself down before nodding in response, "You got that right, I'll refrain from that in the future."
Harukaka, rather than approach the high strung gal, instead collected a few tomes from the floor and set them on a nearby counter, no doubt with the intent for Esme to check them out. After all, he had gone through a good deal of books in the store already, and hardly any of them held any valuable information for him.
Still, it was certainly a rarity to see such a stressed out young girl skirting around in a book store, especially an abandoned one such as this. Unable to hide his curiosity, Harukaka couldn't help but bluntly ask, "So, Esme was it? You in trouble with the locals or something? I don't mind either way, I'm not the "fighter of justice" type of doll. It's just curious that you're...well, on edge at the moment."
There was also something else off about the young girl as well, golden and azure eyes gazing over her again and swiftly analyzing her before Harukaka would add, "And your presence...doesn't feel like most people. Guess you really are an interesting gal. Then again, I'm not the pinnacle of normalcy, am I?"

The tall girl didn't respond for a few moments. Bone-white hair coming down to rest in the middle of their back, or past, in a tight braid that binded up some of the silvery locks. The length likely longer, when it was finally let down. Finally, she spoke again in a manner that continued to keep up the illusion that they didn't use their voice that often.
"I'm in no trouble. I merely don't talk to people that often. I don't really like them, all that much."
Esme continued to keep a close eye on Harukaka. The words filled with their magical energy settling down atop several tombs of books. 'Link' being visible for a moment, before fading. Then 'wall', as several books suddenly sprung up as if animated and constructed a small 'barrier'. The books could probably easily be torn through, but it gave the small illusion of privacy, which let the girl visibly relax some. The activation of the spell taking notably more energy, as the making of her words didn't seem all that draining in and of itself.
"As for talking about myself being...different. I suppose I would be. Typically people that wake up in a strange place, with no memory of their pasts safe for little shining bubbles, are interesting people."

"Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that..." Harukaka replied, gently removing some of the books from the center of the "wall", allowing for a little window so that he could still see his newest acquaintance. It had been amazing that she could move inanimate objects the way she did, and Harukaka couldn't help but give a gentle little purr as gazed in awe at the apparent magician.
The doll then grinned, resting his arms on the "windowsill" before tilting his head and replying, "So you don't like talking to people, huh? Well that's good to know, because I'm not what one would consider a person. So, I at least have a chance at talkin' to you, don't I?"
His chipper mood could not be quelled, the feline chuckling to himself a bit as he was unable to hide his amusement at the situation. Sure, it was a tragedy that this young woman lost her memories, but Harukaka was certain that she would regain them at some point. The black cat doll's eyes almost seemed to shimmer in the low light, before he would leave the hole in the book wall. This absence was for the briefest of moments, before he would return with a lit candle, gently placing it on the nearby counter and motioning towards it, "If you want some light to read a little, I went ahead and lit a candle for you."
Post by jadethelost on Apr 8, 2016 21:27:53 GMT -4
The girl let out a small sigh from her lips as the cat took out a book in the 'wall' she just constructed. Wishing that she could have fused the books together with the actual ceiling and floor, as opposed to making them stack so neatly atop of each other. Still, magic lingered in the books, so when Harukaka moved the book manually it flew back up and rested atop of another book. Comically, even.
"It would seem that you're going to be my company for the evening with or without my express permission. Very well, then. But I shall have you know, I'm not much when it comes to conversation."
Then, the doll disappeared for a moment and she briefly flicked her wrist, parting some of the books after giving the linked objects another set of words. Open and close. So she could open the 'windows' at will to see what he was doing on the other side. Resting back against the wall with a book in her hand by the time he returned, flipping through some of the pages.
"Right....Thank you for the light, then. I don't know where you got the candle, though. Carry wax on you, Mister Doll?"

Harukaka would grin, showing off his brown messenger bag filled with cooking supplies and a few candles thrown in. It was so tempting to ask the young woman to guess why he had them, but honesty was the best policy, and the feline would simply state, "Well, it would be hard for a chef to set up a candle lit dinner without any candles."
The outside of the store was till dark, as it always had been ever since the sudden calamity that befell the galaxy. The dull glow of the candle was a bright reprieve from the darkness that surrounded all. Harukaka would still roll his eyes, smiling at the title before he would reply, "I already told you my name, Esme. It's Harukaka, but even that's a mouthful. How about you call me Haru, alright?"
As he gently sat down in front of one of the "windows", the feline couldn't help but wonder what she was reading. Giving Esme a few minutes to turn the pages and read into her latest acuisition, Harukaka would softly whistle, and ask the silver haired lass, "So, that book you reading any good?"
Post by jadethelost on Apr 8, 2016 21:57:23 GMT -4
Peeked toward Harukaka as they showed off that bag, taking minor interest in it before their attention shifted back to the book in their hands. Listening to the male, obviously, but also multi-tasking with something else at the very same time. If the darkness didn't make her feel comfortable, she didn't let it show. Or perhaps her body was still too tense to really get anymore rigid. Whatever the reason, she continued to read till, eventually, another flick of her hand made the 'windows' part to the side and grant Haru access. Permission seemingly being given non-verbally for him to get closer if he so wished.
"I know. I heard you say your name earlier, but are we really on first-name bases already? As for the book...It's fairly interesting. About grim-reapers and such...Appears to be a young adult novel, probably modern era, as the ideas are pretty fanciful and appear to be focused on having some aspect of romance shoe-horned in."

Nothing needed to be said as Haru took Esme's silent invitiation, entering her book sanctuary and gazing at some of the dozens of books on the shelves, before settling upon what appeared to be a large cook book. He would pull the large book of the shelf with a paw, and slowly skim through it, determining whether or not the recipe was new to him or not. Of course, he kept an ear available for Esme, and would blink a bit as he heard her response, "Well, Harukaka is technically my only name...but I would prefer if you called me Haru anyway."
Harukaka then continued to skim through his book, gently tapping his chin with his free paw before he couldn't help but add, "But that book your reading...I'm sorry, it's just that you see more like the type to read non-fiction...to learn more about the rest of the world. Not that anything is wrong with a compelling story and in depth characters, of course."
The cat whined slightly, feeling as though he might have made things a bit awkward by judging a book by it's cover, but he was brutally honest when it came to everything, so he could already feel that Esme was going to make some sort of comment towards him.

Calmly, the Nobody continued to read. To turn page after page, progressing in the story held in their hand as the cat-doll-thing settled, and grew comfortable beside her with what appeared to be a cookbook from a quick glance. His comment earning him only a small nod of her head when it came to his name, while his other comment made her let out a little "Ah...." and allow the silence to grow between them. After all, Esme wasn't really used to people. And since that little girl...Well, let's just say she hadn't much company.
Still, it'd be rude not to answer, and he seemed to be waiting.
"I read anything I find interesting, really. Books on war, books on love. Books can contain the idea of...so many things. Emotions, memories, fantasy....Who are we to say what is truly fiction and what is not, Haru? After all...You're a talking kitty. If that is feasible, why not the acts within books, scattered across the universe?"
Lifting up a hand, the book 'wall' formed into a book dome around them, connecting in such a way that they were in practically their own little nest.

It was hard not to agree with Esme on that, a lot of bizarre and unexplained things were happening as of late, and what was impossible on one world was entirely plausible on another. Who was Haru to decide what was fiction or not! Still, it probably wasn't best to get too philosophical on the matter, as, after what seemed like five minutes of skimming, Harukaka put down his book, having finished it's entirety. It wasn't like Harukaka was a super fast reader, he just knew all of the recipes in the book.
"Well, I'm not actually a talking cat, you know? I'm a doll, but I see what you mean. So, would you happen to have a favorite book that you like to read? Mine is One Thousand and One Nights, due to all of the lessons it teaches, and all sorts of loveable characters within it's confines." Harukaka stated, scooting just a tiny bit closer to the young woman, looking at another pile of books to try and find something he could read that would take up more of his time.
The formation of the dome was a little cute in Haru's mind, like a more solid form of a pillow fort that he used to build in his early years. Still, he couldn't help but smirk, "Well, getting a bit more comfortable around me, hm?"

The Nobody didn't buy the bait, though her gaze did shift over to the ca--doll for a moment. Then, she returned to her reading wordlessly for another few minutes before speaking up again. "Tamora Pierce, I think...That's the name of the author I like best, or liked best, in current time. She woke a lot of adventure novels revolving around strong women that didn't need to fall in love to make an interesting tale. Sometimes, she'd even poke fun at the notion. And the plot themselves were very good."
Gradually, they finished the book they had in their hands, and slipped it into the sleeve of their outfit, casting a glance over at Haru. "But, I suppose if you must know...I find it silly to be frightened of such a small thing. That small thing being you, obviously."
The way she said it didn't seem outright mean, like it was intended to be so. But rather like she was stating a fact with a little bit of emotion behind it, like amusement. Or the shadow of it at least.

The feline's ears would twitch from time to time as he listened, paying close attention to Esme's opinions, the cat not even reaching for a new book as he was too busy focusing. After all, it would be rude to start up a conversation and not participate! The doll would pull out a few wrapped up rice balls, something he had made himself just this morning, and gently set the tray of six down between his new acquaintance and himself.
"I am rather small for my stature, sure. But, I can be quite fierce, if need be. And I'm not surprised you enjoy stories like that, you seem pretty tough yourself!" Haru would reply, one of his claw blades jutting out as he would impale one of the rice balls onto it and start taking bites out of it. The rice was mixed with various spices to give it a salty, yet zesty flavor that made the chef purr at his own work.
"By the way, if you're feeling hungry, you can have some of my rice balls. I know it's not the most filling meal, but I don't really need to eat much to keep myself going," Harukaka offered, nudging the tray over to the young woman, hoping that she would at least give his rice ball a try.

Esme took a few moments to watch the feline eat, before she'd let herself push out a small giggle of sorts. Surprised that she actually managed to do so, and it didn't sound ridiculous or out of place. That being said, she also couldn't help but reach a hand forward, and scritch under his chin as he spoke of being 'fierce'. "Is that right?"
After, regardless of how Haru responds, the Nobody picked up one of the rice balls with her thin fingers, and brought it to her lips to nibble at the white outside, going gradually through it. Making not a single grain of a mess while she ate and seemingly enjoyed his food. Perhaps she'd comment when done.
After all, it was rude to talk with your mouth full!
