In a cataclysm known as the Nightfall, the worlds were almost completely destroyed by a harrowing surge of darkness.
In the shadows of the ensuing chaos a new group has taken shape. Led by an Aegyl named Kalos, the 11th Hour touts an esoteric knowledge of how to combat the darkness and restore the worlds. They might be the worlds’ best chance at survival; but nobody really knows enough about them to confirm or deny their claims.
On the brink of collapse, the universe holds its breath in anticipation. Of restoration? Of destruction? It is up to individuals like yourself to decide.

That's one of the stories that actually happened in an FF (FF3, actually). Light and Dark must be balanced. When they are imbalanced, a set of warriors appear to balance it out. In the story of FF3, previously the light had gotten too strong, and the Dark Warriors had to appear to fight back the light and keep it from invading the realm of darkness any further. In the story, it was now darkness that was getting out of control, hence the appearance of the main characters - the warriors of light.
This is why I've always theorized that in the Realm of Darkness, the roles of light and dark are switched. Light is seen as the bad thing, and darkess as the good trait. Hearless from the realm of light will thrive if introduced to the realm of darkness, and visa versa. I'd actually think it'd be interesting to have to up against a Dark Realm Heartless in the game.
Except he never lied a first time. All he told Sora was that he promised he couldn't tell. There was no lie involved.
Lie by omission, Rook. Though, perhaps your parents weren't as strict as mine... I was referring to when Mickey was refusing to tell Sora about Riku. I was raised to call that a 'lie by omission'.
Likewise, there is a possibility that he's lying, or only telling a half-truth. For example, Xehanort may have actually had a significant part in causing that heartless to come into being. As such, Xehanort's Heartless could be a half-truth - it's the heartless that Xehanort created, intentional or not.
BUT... it's only a theory, and one that I don't personally subscribe to. It IS possible, but I don't really think it'll happen...
Yeesh, how long has it been since we've had updates on this game? The official KH site states that the site went up (at least in placeholder form) back in December of 2007... And while we have active updates on the other two games, this one's got a whole lot of nothing... O.o
Well, it's supposed to be the big prequel event of the series. I'm quite sure Squenix is trying their damndest to keep lids on this stuff. Aside from theories and speculation we know nothing concrete about any singular aspect of the game, unlike the others.
But you'd think they'd do what they're doing with Days... Not explain too much on story, but show how the system works and what not. Do they even have a release date on it, or is it still 'coming soon'?
They've shown videos of the gameplay, I think we posted them earlier in this thread. And the release date is still full of question marks, but by all reports it's due out in the states at the tail end of this year, beginning of 2010 at the latest.
1. Yes, we noticed it. I personally think (Read: theorize) that Terra is he who will one day become Xemnas. Xehanort (not Master) showed up in Radiant Garden almost a decade prior to KH1, with no memory, save the name Xehanort. It's already been said by official sources that he hates Master Xehanort for whatever betrayal the Master pulled on him and his Knights, and it was never said that when they found "Xehanort" that he actually gave his name, only a name. That of the man he hated so much. This would explain the eyes color change, the similar hairstyles between Terra and Ansem the Seeker of Darkness, as well as said Ansem's knowledge of Hearts, Kingdom Hearts, Keyblades, and other such plot devices.
I personally agree with you, and I think that it would fit in well with this:
-I don't think there is, but Spoilers to be safe ;D
(From Kingdom Hearts Wiki)
'Aqua's armor and Keyblade were briefly seen in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+. They reside in the Room of Sleep, a room constructed by the Organization under Radiant Garden for an as of yet unknown purpose. This reveals a possibility that at this point in time she is dead. Xemnas apparently visits the armor often, calling it "friend" and talking to it for long periods of time. This has piqued the curiosity and suspicion of Xigbar, who often eavesdrops on his conversations, and once shared this story with Zexion, stating that one time he heard another voice respond to Xemnas'
In 358/2 Days, Xion's appearance becomes that of Ventus from BbS. Xigbar acts as if he's seen it before. I have a feeling he's connected in many a way...
"But is sure picked a dud this time. But you don't look like you're HALF the hero the others were" -Xigbar to Sora
He's apparently fought Keyblade Wielders before. He's familiar with Ven's appearance. Dare I say he may be a gueststar in Birth By Sleep?
Telling someone that you made a promise to not say something is the opposite of lying. It's telling the truth. If Mickey said, "I'm just not going to tell you," maybe (in your strict household which is probably driving you to the nets in the first place) it could be considered lie by omission. And if Mickey had responded to Sora's query with a simple, "...ok, time go, Sora!" Then even I could be persuaded to call it lie by omission.
Instead, he told the truth and kept his promise to Riku at the same time. As keeping promises seems to be a prevalent theme in the games, I would wager that we're expected to consider Mickey noble for this.
Speaking of prevalent themes...
This Light and Darkness thing is bugging me...again. Let's get some things straight.
Fact: Human beings wrote Kingdom Hearts and all the games associate with it. Fact: Human beings have different ideas about what dark and light means to them. Fact: These differences of opinions have spawned many a story, game, movie, etc. over a course of thousands of years.
Got the facts? Fantastic. Now, let's quit preaching and droning on and on about the "truth" about the darkness and try to look at the game from the perspective of the creators and as a piece of art in itself. In the first game, it was quite clear that one of the core concept was that light was good and darkness was bad. The Princesses of Heart had no darkness in their hearts and they were GOOD (honestly, this is the only proof I need to back up my claim, but I'll keep going anyway). The Heartless sprang from the darkness in people's hearts and were BAD. Whether or not you believe in good/evil/purity/etc. etc. the FIRST game was very clearly presenting a classic idea of things associated with the sky/air/sun/light/purity were all positive things while earth/material/dark/night/corruption were all negative things. These are CLASSIC symbols, people. The sky is for freedom and the leaving behind of material possessions for enlightenment, while earth is for baser elements and possession and the flesh. And let's not forget the whole pure hearted Kairi thing. Guess which element is represented in emotions and dealings with the heart? Oh, that's right...water!
So the creators found that they were wildly successful. Cool! Let's make more!
Now, we must take a step back and look at cultures. In Asian culture, the idea of balance between dark and light, yin and yang, moist and dry, death and birth is central. Dualities is something they've always focused on. Finding the balance and achieving harmony. Do what works for you, man. That seems to be the theme. In Buddhism, the idea is to find such complete balance and absence of self, that you find Nirvana. Taoists seek to find the "flow" and balance of the universe and go with it. In old Japanese culture it was perfectly acceptable to call yourself a Buddhist AND a Confucianist AND a Christian. I have no idea what it's like now (I'm not studying modern Japanese religion), but I can tell you that this all effects how our games come out.
Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II introduced a bunch of new characters and more significantly, a mirror the Heartless: The Nobodies. Balance achieved. Forget the Princesses of Heart for a minute or two or five hundred and sixty four. For every high there is a low. For every laugh there is a tear. For every Sora there is a Roxas. Oh...wait. Damn it, how do we explain why these things weren't around in the first game? I got it! Only the people with STRONG hearts have Nobodies. Ka-pow! High fives all around.
See where I'm going with this?
I've noticed that a lot of Asian films and stories have bad guys that aren't "evil," but rather they are simply people trying to achieve something the best way they know how. I look at Miyazaki's Spirited Away and movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Even the bad witches are just people doing their best because they don't really know any other way.
Yeah, man, let's teach them that darkness isn't all bad. The Nobodies just want hearts. I feel bad for them don't you? Ok, but how do we make it clearer? Just give Mickey a line about it. K. Is Sora still a good guy? I dunno, man.
...
Sequels teim is naow?
Heck, yes!
Conclusion:
You have an opinion on what light and dark means to you. It has nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts. If it makes you feel better, my opinion on light and dark has nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts either. Just throw those assumptions away! Instead, look at this from the perspective of the game itself and its purpose and motivation.
Ok, well, I've spent enough time here and I'm sufficiently hungry for a bagel.
